If a simple, old-school and cheap solution is desired, I still have the
original 48V transformer charger from my Lectric Leopard up in my attic. I
bought the car with only a few hundred original miles and immediately
upgraded everything to 120V, so it can't have been used more than a few
times. I'd be happy to see it gone for an attractive price.

I also have my 1980 Lectric Leopard charger. It's even simpler than the
ComutaCar charger! It's just a big transformer, rectifier, manual
high/low charge rate switch, mechanical timer, and amp gauge.

It would do the job, as long as the user provided the "smarts" to know
what current and for how long to charge.

That's a great opportunity, Gail. But it's heavy; the shipping will cost
a fortune. Luckily, the transformer is very unlikely to have failed,
unless it was used as a boat anchor or left out in the rain for decades.
It sounds like he would only need the electronics board.

[EVDL] (not vw pr) Samsung can’t deliver> 15GWh discrepancy

2019-06-03 Thread brucedp5 via EV

https://electrek.co/2019/05/27/vw-massive-battery-supply-samsung-cant-deliver/
VW needs to rethink its massive battery supply plan as Samsung can’t deliver
May. 27th 2019 Fred Lambert

]

The Volkswagen group is in the midst of securing a massive amount of battery
cell supply to support its ambitious electric vehicle push, but one of its
suppliers apparently can’t deliver.

Back in 2016, VW launched a new commitment to electric vehicles as they
slowly started to distance themselves from diesel following the Dieselgate
scandal.

With a goal to make 3 million electric vehicles per year between all their
brands (VW, Audi, Porsche, etc.) by 2025, they considered making their
battery cells to support the extremely high production rate, but they ended
up abandoning those plans.

Instead, they issued battery supply contracts worth $48 billion with
existing battery manufacturers. The contracts are estimated to be for about
300 GWh of battery cells.

But last year, VW CEO Herbert Diess said that he doesn’t want to become
dependent on those manufacturers:

“We must not make ourselves dependent on a few Asian manufacturers in
the long term,”

They are now considering building their battery factories again, but they
have to work with suppliers in the meantime.

VW split those billions worth of contracts between several companies:
Samsung SDI, LG Chem , SK Innovation, and CATL.

Now Bloomberg reports that Samsung is only able to deliver a fraction of the
originally agreed upon amount of 20 GWh of battery cells:

“Samsung initially agreed to deliver batteries for just over 20 gigawatt
hours, enough to power 200,000 cars with 100 kilowatt hour packs, before
different views on production volume and schedule emerged during detailed
negotiations, said the people, who asked not to be identified as the talks
are confidential. The impasse cut pledged supplies to less than 5 gigawatt
hours, they said.”

The 15 GWh discrepancy might look like a small amount in comparison to the
300 GWh of total contracts issued, but it’s a huge amount of battery cells
on its own – undoubtedly more battery cells than VW has deployed to date.

VW’s plan to account for the difference is unclear at this point.

Electrek’s Take

Volkswagen should use this problem as an opportunity to build its own
battery factory and secure cell supply that way.

They have been in discussions with Northvolt, a battery manufacturing
startup launched by former Tesla executives, and they should move ahead a
launch a project with the billions of dollars that they would have given
Samsung.

From there, they could scale production over time and gain expertise in
battery cell manufacturing.

It will likely also encourage other automakers to make direct investments in
battery cell manufacturing instead of all relying on a handful battery
suppliers.

[EVDL] EVent: victoriaevclub.com 10day EV rally quietly zipped around Vancouver-Is.ca

There are about 400 EV charging stations on the South Island. (File photo)
]

Dozens of electric vehicles quietly zipped around southern Vancouver Island
over a recent 10-day span, their drivers taking part in a rally open
exclusively to e-vehicles.

Participants had to unravel clues and travel to as many of the 122 rally
locations as they could in the first-ever Plug-In Challenge.

“It was huge,” said Julian Sale, a director with the Victoria EV Club, which
organized the event.

“The intention here was to get people driving around on electricity, without
burning any gas at all,” said Sale.

Even though they already own EVs, many of the 56 drivers were surprised what
the vehicles are capable of.

“In this challenge we did about 900 kilometres, and at the highest BC Hydro
rate for my car to go that 900 kilometres cost me $18 in electricity,"
Martin Webb, the proud owner of a Smart EV.

"For 10 days of driving for hours on end and having absolutely tremendous
fun, $18,” he said.

“And finding the huge number of chargers over on Salt Spring has now taken
away the fear of being able to drive over to Salt Spring with the car that
has limited range,” he added.

His experience is in line with a new Research Co. poll which found most
Vancouver Islanders say they’ll seriously consider buying an EV the next
time they purchase a new car.

“What is also interesting is a really high level of endorsement for the
things that the government is doing – so 71 per cent who say it's a good
idea that by 2040 all vehicles should be electric and zero-emission," said
Mario Canseco, president of Research Co.

According to the poll, the biggest thing holding islanders back is the
concern about having enough places to charge a vehicle, followed by the fear
of being stranded if they can’t find a charging station. The price of
electric vehicles was the third concern.

Canseco said there are far more charging stations than most people realize
and with the right combination of rebates drivers can take up to $16,000 off
the price of an EV.

There are about 400 charging stations on the South Island.

Somehow those facts have to get to drivers, Canseco said.

"It's not only about infrastructure but information. People need to know
that by the time they make this decision that the charging stations will be
there for them," he said.

Cordova Bay’s Sheena Pennie doesn’t need any convincing.

Pennie and a friend managed to get to 101 destinations during Plug-In
Challenge, more than anyone else.

“These two crazy ladies and we won the top prize, it was fantastic," said
Pennie, who has two electric vehicles. "We just had a blast."

She said the rally was a great opportunity to educate others about electric
cars.

“Once you are an EV driver, you are the biggest ambassador going. You will
tell and convince everybody to buy electric cars.”

[EVDL] NCM chemistry

2019-06-03 Thread Gary Krysztopik via EV
Does anyone have direct experience with Samsung, Liyuan or CATL NCM
prismatic cells? They have higher energy density than LFP but probably not
as stable a chemistry? I would guess Samsung have to be good quality, and
I heard CATL is being used in the automotive industry, but I have never
heard of anyone using Liyuan. Just wondering if it's worth risking a large
pack on this newer chemistry. The energy density is needed but Tesla
modules are out of the question.

Thanks,
Gary
