Also, screenings of the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car?" will be offered Wednesday, Sept. 9, and Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Kalamazoo in conjunction with Drive Electric Week, which celebrates and promotes electric vehicles. At least six different models of electric vehicles will be available for rides from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the People's Food Co-op, 507 Harrison St., in Kalamazoo. [Plugins will include the Tesla Model S, Nissan LEAF, Mitsubishi i, Zero Motorcycles EVs, and Chevy Volt pih] according to organizers. Local owners of electric vehicles will be on hand to share their stories and a display will be set up from Four Elements Energy showing solar hook-up for the vehicles. "Electric vehicles use much less of the planet's resources than traditional gas vehicles" and cause "so much less planet destruction," Ben Brown, event organizer and owner of an electric vehicle, said in a news release. "Electric cars are not just for elite or pretty people, they are for all people who need a reliable, sustainable car." The Kalamazoo event coincides with National Drive Electric Week, which runs Sept. 12-20 and is presented by Plug in America, Sierra Club, the Electric Auto Association and Nissan LEAF, which is the exclusive auto sponsor. Awards will be given to area organizations who have been leaders in electric vehicles and sustainability efforts in Kalamazoo, including Cole Nissan, the Western Michigan University Office for Sustainability, and the People's Food Co-op. The Sept. 16 event will coincide with the People's Food Co-op's 100 Mile Market, which features locally grown or produced food and is held Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. Free public screenings of the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car?" are scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Van Deusen Room of the downtown Kalamazoo Public Library, 315 S. Rose St., and Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 11:35 a.m. in the Light Fine Arts Building at Kalamazoo College, 1200 Academy St. Both events will feature a question-and-answer session with Brown in addition to the movie screening. However, there is another Italian family which could soon be considered the modern equivalent of the Ferrari phenomenon. Five years ago, CRP Group (a collection of specialist companies with expertise in high precision CNC machining and WindForm Additive Manufacturing) built and entered an electric racing motorcycle “eCRP 1.2” into the TTXGP EU race in Assen. The bike went on to win the European Championship title that year. Based on the successful debut of the “eCRP 1.2” and drawing on the company’s experience with Additive Manufacturing, the second racing motorcycle “eCRP 1.4” which had a custom-made lithium-polymer (LiPo) 7.4kWh battery competed in two classes in the TTXGP series. The harsh and testing environment of racing was a good proving ground for the technology and its reliability, and led to the development of a road version: Energica. Fast forward to 2015, Energica has a fully specified electric motorcycle range, a dealership network and is delivering its first batch of bikes to some lucky customers. Along the way has been several tradeshows and exhibitions, one of which was at the Monaco ePrix. Energica was part of an exhibition at the Convergence initiative launched during the ePrix event. Livia Cevolini, boss of Energica Superbike, a charming and enthusiastic lady spoke to a queue of interested delegates (including DSVirgin Formula E boss, Alex Tai) about the latest Italian masterpiece from Modena. Her company now boasts three models of superbikes: Energica Eva & Ego: Energica Ego has a synchronous oil-cooled motor with permanent magnets and has 100kW of instantaneous power at its disposal. Ego accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 150 mph. Clients are taking delivery of the Ego this year, and the Eva is expected on sale soon. Energica Ego45: The Ego45 is a unique version of the electric superbike celebrating the 45th anniversary of its manufacturer, CRP Group. The exclusive and customisable Ego45 is made to special order as a maximum of 45 units will ever be built. Guest writer Bunmi Ade recently interviewed Energica CEO, Livia Cevolini about the company’s growth and a possible return to racing. Energica was “born” in Modena, home of iconic supercar, Ferrari. So what was the motivation to develop an electric superbike rather than a petrol or hybrid? It’s not a coincidence that Energica was developed here; we live in the Italian Motor Valley! We are raised with fast and gorgeous cars and bikes. Energica was born here in Modena, in the capital of speed, from an entrepreneurial vision of my family between 2008 and 2009. During those years, we decided to start looking at what we thought was the future, like electric vehicles. We decided to focus on something completely new, with completely new technologies, and in a market where there was still time and space to be heard. This is why we decided to develop an electric bike instead of a petrol or hybrid bike. We had two years of racing that served primarily as Technology Scouting, then in 2011 we started working on the road version, Energica. We started to fit the needs of a streetbike with the new electric technology and the differences of the racing market; from here we arrived at the Energica Ego, which is currently on sale. [image] Livia and her brother, Eng. Franco Cevolini, CEO CRP The development timescales are quite impressive – do you have any unique technologies and patents from developing the superbikes? Yes, several patents have been registered for Energica: battery packs, the VCU, the ride-by-wire and Windform materials – a unique composite material within the additive manufacturing and 3D printing sector. Only the North Delta man wasn’t in the all-electric two-seater — he was plugged into it. Evans’s home router, laptop and a smartphone charging station drew power from the car while it was parked in his driveway. “It was just like a little slice of camping only with Netflix and power for phone and iPad charging,” he says of the 48 hours his family of four was without power. The 54-year old has worked in and around the electric car business for the past 15 years, first as the director of business development for an EV charging station manufacturer, and then as a consultant specializing in the high-tech industry. Using a $30 inverter plugged into his car, Evans ran an extension cord to his home for power. “To be fair, what I did could be done by anyone with a (gasoline-powered) vehicle,” he says, explaining the inverter he used can be plugged into a 12-volt car battery. “But the penalty of having a low battery in a gas-powered car is you can’t start when you need to.” While the inverter Evans used could not support the power supply required for a full-sized fridge or freezer, it can power a small fridge or electric cooler. Evans estimates his car could power such a system for days, if not weeks. More robust inverter systems are available. Nissan, builders of the all-electric Leaf, offer a “power control system” in the Japanese market, where household power can be supplied from the Leaf’s lithium-ion battery. The automaker says for a Japanese home, a fully charged Leaf can provide regular electric power for two full days. Tesla’s Powerwall energy storage system, available in Canada, is also advertised as an emergency backup supply, but does not plug directly into a vehicle. But Evans says the cost of these units does not warrant their installation. “At most (in a power failure) you’re probably looking at $1,000 of food spoilage,” he says. “The things that upsets most people during a power failure are there are no lights on and there is no entertainment.” Except in the Evans’ home. What about putting heat sink fins on the motor case? Do you know whether the problem lies in the heat transfer from the windings to the case versus the case to the surrounding air? Good point. It is very hard to hold onto metal above 70degC. I would bet the max temp to be much higher than that. Also if you are concerned why not duct air to it? In days way passed, we used 3" ducting on the cars we raced to cool the brakes. It is very affective. Re: [EVDL] hub motor cooling ac motor
I bolted a fan directly on my air-cooled AC motor, and that helped, but in this case, it will need a directed airflow to help cool the motor. If that doesn't help enough, insert a misting nozzle into the airflow. However, before doing anything drastic, attach a digital thermometer to the motor and find out exactly how hot it is getting, and then compare that to the max value from the manual. Ken, Motors come in a wide variety of temp specs. Some will be fine at a scorching 180 deg C (that is 80 deg above water boiling temp!) while others won't last long at such a temp. So, the spec sheet is where you need to go. After that, measure the actual temp to see if you have a problem or not.
