Production of this model begin over one year ago in 2014. By August 2015 sales of Kia Soul EV amounted to 5,399. South Korea’s car is sold mainly in a few countries, but Kia is slowly expanding availability of the Soul EV. Through the end of August 2015, 1,177 were sold cumulatively in South Korea (in total 4,222 were sold overseas), while an additional 981 were sold in the US and at least 1,099 in Germany (registrations for 2015). Another 1,000 or so we believe are in Norway, where our incomplete data already indicate a several-hundred-strong fleet of Soul EVs. All in all, around 4 per 5 Soul EVs were sold in South Korea, Germany, Norway or US (several states, recently expanded to 10). Target for the second year? Unknown, but August ends with an all-time monthly high of 676 sales. To showcase the Soul EV’s competitive attributes, Kia Motors joined forces with influential motoring journalist, Simon McBride, to put it to the ultimate test – a zero emissions race across UK counties, against an electric train. The task involved driving from York castle to Carlisle castle using electricity alone, a 122 mile direct route by road and a mainline blast by train. Only three rules applied, castle to castle, electric power only and any point to point route was permitted. The video, which accurately outlines the routes and tracks each journey from point to point, gives an exciting perspective into how all-electric cars can be taken out of their day to day environment and challenged to deliver a variation of driver needs and journeys. '20th Anniversary EV Fest Rally' http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1100394_norwegian-electric-car-clubs-scenic-driving-video-surprise-hit Norwegian Electric-Car Club's Scenic Driving Video: Surprise Hit By Stephen Edelstein Oct 8, 2015 [video https://youtu.be/ABvvcQTBeSI eRally Geiranger 2015: Taking electric vehicles out of town! Norsk Elbilforening Sep 14, 2015 The world´s best place for EV tourism - Boasting charging opportunities for more than 60 cars, we welcomed a crowd of EV drivers to world famous tourist spot Geiranger, Norway, says Christina Bu of Norsk elbilforening. Beyond 50 electric vehicles (called elbil in Norwegian) with more than 100 people on board, from all over the country, showed up for the EV festival based at historic Hotel Union and Norsk fjords enter in the last weekend of August. The world famous UNESCO World Heritage Site Geiranger was - unofficially - crowned the best developed place for EV tourism: The village with a population of about 250 now boasts more than one charging point for each tenth citizen. - This is probably a world record and the reason why we crown Geiranger as the best village in the world for EV tourism, says Christina Bu, secretary general of the Norwegian EV Association (Norsk elbilforening). The EV Festival also constituted the first part of the association's 20th anniversary (see fact file below). To promote development of charging infrastructure in rural areas, and at the same time EV tourism, this year´s event was located in scenic Geiranger. - With our EV festival we would, once again, like to place the focus on the EV not being just a metropolitan phenomenon. Last weekend we proved emissionfree EV tourism in a wonderful, rural scenery is not just possible. It is perfect, says Bu. Not only Norwegian EV drivers took their vehicles into the lovely fjord and mountain scenery last weekend: Harm Otten came all the way from the Netherlands to join the rally. An interview with Otten, in English, has been published on Norway´s most popular EV website (elbil.no): elbil.no/nyheter/elbilpolitikk/3617-from-holland-to-geiranger-in-his-renault-zoe After the grand opening of the charging park at Norsk fjordsenter, which now offers both quick charger (CHAdeMO and CCS) and 24 flexible charging stations (11-22 kW AC), all participating EVs took on the steep slopes to famous landmark Dalsnibba, situated 1,476 meters above fjord level. In addition a total of 34 temporary charging points made sure all participants at the festival were able to be fully charged. - There was no range anxiety at all, and EVs crowded the parking lot at busy Dalsnibba for a change - instead of just fossil fuelled cars and tourist buses, says Bu. In other words: The future also arrived at the famous landmark this Saturday. See large and scenic photo album from the EV festival on Flickr! FACT FILE: Norsk elbilforening Norsk elbilforening (Norwegian EV Association) was founded in November 1995. Norsk elbilforening´s primary goal is to promote zero emission transport solutions. We support the introduction of vehicles that run fully or partially on renewable energy. Norsk elbilforening is an independent consumer organization (NGO) and today has almost 27.000 members. Norway now has more than 60.000 battery electric vehicles (BEV) and around 7.000 plug-in hybrids (PHEV). This means 2,5 percent of the total passenger car fleet is now chargeable. images http://images.thecarconnection.com/lrg/electric-car-rally-in-geiranger-norway-image-norsk-elbilforening-via-flickr_100530089_l.jpg Electric-car rally in Geiranger, Norway / Norsk elbilforening via Flickr http://images.thecarconnection.com/lrg/electric-car-rally-in-geiranger-norway-image-norsk-elbilforening-via-flickr_100530087_l.jpg http://images.thecarconnection.com/lrg/electric-car-rally-in-geiranger-norway-image-norsk-elbilforening-via-flickr_100530088_l.jpg ] Thanks to aggressive government incentives and substantial charging infrastructure, Norway has the highest number of electric cars per capita of any country in the world. Now, some of that enthusiasm for electric cars is going viral. A video of a rally held by the Norsk elbilforening (Norwegian EV Association) last month has already garnered more than 25,000 views on Facebook and YouTube, the group points out. The video shows a convoy of around 50 electric cars driving through the town of Geiranger, and to the top of a nearby mountain--all in celebration of the group's 20th anniversary. Geiranger--population 250--has been unofficially crowned the "world's best place for EV tourism" by the Norwegian EV Association, because it has one charging station for roughly every 10 citizens. Club members made the most of Geiranger's scenic location, shooting a long line of electric cars climbing up a twisty mountain road. There are also several dramatic overhead shots that were taken from a drone. The convoy included a wide variety of electric cars, from Nissan Leafs to
[EVDL] Assault> Trespassing media's ice injures Gigafactory employee
http://www.theverge.com/2015/10/13/9521561/tesla-gigafactory-trespassing-assault Tesla says journalists snuck into Gigafactory and assaulted its employees By Chris Welch on October 13, 2015 A confrontation between Tesla and two trespassing journalists has resulted in felony assault charges. Tesla is publicly sharing its side of the troubling incident, which occurred last Friday, in a blog post published today. According to the company, an employee noticed two people snapping photos of the Gigafactory, Tesla's still-under-construction lithium-ion battery factory, and immediately called for assistance. The journalists refused to identify themselves once notified that they were illegally trespassing on Tesla property, though Tesla notes that IDs from the Reno Gazette Journal were hanging from their pockets and plainly visible. (Both were later confirmed as RGJ employees, in case you were wondering whether they were merely impersonating journalists.) They also tried to argue that they weren't knowingly trespassing, though Tesla says the only way into the Gigafactory is through a fence with plenty of "private property" warnings. The journalists were asked to remain at the scene while the local Sheriff's department and more Tesla security responded to the complaint. And that's when things just got downright insane. Here's how Tesla says the events unfolded: Disregarding this request, the RGJ employees entered the Jeep. As the Tesla employee attempted to record the license plate number on the rear bumper, the driver put it in reverse and accelerated into the Tesla employee, knocking him over, causing him to sustain a blow to the left hip, an approximate 2" bleeding laceration to his right forearm, a 3" bleeding laceration to his upper arm, and scrapes on both palms. As the RGJ employees fled the scene, their Jeep struck the ATV that carried the two safety managers. When one of the safety managers dismounted the ATV and approached the Jeep, the driver of the Jeep accelerated into him, striking him in the waist. One of the journalists, photographer Andy Barron, is being charged with two counts of felony assault, and both will face trespassing charges. Tesla is understandably livid about the situation, as it would seem these journalists ignored common sense (and the law) in pursuing a scoop on the company's $5 billion battery plant. "We appreciate the interest in the Gigafactory, but the repeated acts of trespassing, including by those working for the RGJ, is illegal, dangerous and needs to stop," Tesla said in its blog post. "In particular, we will not stand for assaults on our employees and are working with law enforcement to investigate this incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice." So far, the Reno Gazette Journal has not sought to discredit or dispute Tesla's version of the story, but says its jeep came away with a shattered driver's side window — said to be smashed with a rock — and slashed seatbelt. For its part, Tesla says the RGJ jeep struck its security ATV and hit another safety manager in the waist before arrests were made. "We take this situation very seriously and it is under investigation at this time," publisher John Maher said in a statement. Barron has worked as a photographer for the company since 1998. The Storey County, Nevada, Sheriff's Department arrested one of the Reno Gazette-Journal employees for two counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon and advised that both will be charged with trespassing, Tesla said ... A Tesla safety manager received a complaint on Friday about two trespassers taking pictures at the $5 billion Gigafactory — a lithium-ion battery factory, which is still being built. He found the two, told them they were trespassing and asked their names, Tesla said. The two refused to give their names, even though their Reno Gazette-Journal ID credentials were hanging from their pockets, the electric-car manufacturer said. A second safety manager joined the first Tesla employee, and they asked the two RGJ employees to wait, as security management and the sheriff's department were on their way, Tesla said. The RGJ employees got into a Jeep marked with RGJ decals and tried to leave, Tesla said. "As the Tesla employee attempted to record the license plate number on the rear bumper, the driver put it in reverse and accelerated into the Tesla employee, knocking him over, causing him to sustain a blow to the left hip, an

Re: [EVDL] Employer EVSE installations vs. Free Lunch?
The time for free electricity for EV's should be past now. At this point, the benefits to EV's are so overwhelming (where there is a good match to individual need) that free electricity only *detracts* from EV adoption by creating EV animosity. I'd far rather pay my employer $15/month and be ALLOWED to plug in to the many 120v outlets that exist than to try to be a pain in the ass trying to get a freebee. If we bought an EV, we can afford the electricity. Lets not shoot ourselves in the foot by expecting or even asking for free juice when it only brings up all kinds of burdensome issues (animosity, taxes, greed)... And all that FREE electricity only creates FRICTION AND ANIMOSITY among EV drivers when those that NEED a charge are blocked by those greedy people trying to snitch a few cents of extra freebee who don't really need it. Free EV charging HAS GOT TO GO! It is UNSUSTAINABLE! Re: [EVDL] Employer EVSE installations vs. Free Lunch?
There are many different scenarios. I rode my electric motorcycle to work all summer long. I drove right into the warehouse past all the warehouse workers and plugged into a normal 120v outlet that my boss said would be fine for me to use. Everyone in the company thinks the bike is cool and no one complains about the free electricity my boss is willing to give me. damon > > > On Oct 15, 2015, at 1:59 AM, Robert Bruninga via EV <ev@lists.evdl.org> > > wrote: > > > > The time for free electricity for EV's should be past now. Re: [EVDL] Employer EVSE installations vs. Free Lunch?
Almost all public charging that I encounter is no longer free. The reason that employers where no networked commercial chargers are installed (with good reason) typically refuse to arrange payment is because it is more hassle than the reward in recovered fees. It is cheaper to give the electricity away. BTW the reason to avoid networked chargers is the dependence on the company that maintains those chargers - the horror stories of companies no longer responding and chargers not working or the excessive fees while the employer provides the space as well as the electricity. So my advice is always to find someone - preferably one of the EVers - who manages the EVSE and maintenance and get a stand-alone charger. Of course the situation for a NEMA 5-20 outlet is simpler and essentially follows the same approach. [EVDL] Charging at College and work: Employer EVSE installations ...
I had a similar yet different experience to Damon's. Years before I had my Blazer EV, even before I worked at hp. I had a choice to make when I was just starting out after my Vietnam war era service (I was lucky action didn't see me , but think of how big and easy a shoot-able target I was). I needed to buy transportation for my 13 mile commute from College to my work at Memorex's 'new' 5" double-sided floppy disk production line. My skinny 1970's budget let me choose between a Honda 50cc ice cub https://www.google.com/search?q=Honda+50cc+cub=isch or an Auranthetic Electric mini bike https://www.google.com/search?q=auranthetic I chose the Auranthetic but I paid extra to have two motors and higher gearing. So, instead of a top speed of 15 mph with a range of 30 miles, I had a top speed of 30 mph and a range of 15 miles. It still had the wimpy 7A on-board rectified-transformer-type charger (extremely slow). I took the transformer out of a 12VDC 20Amp Sears Automotive charger http://www.electric-cars-are-for-girls.com/images/transformer-rectifier.jpg and added a bridge-rectifier in a configuration that allowed for a center-tapped 24VDC that would charge each of the two 12V deep-cycle lead-acid batteries. This configuration pushed twice the output current the transformer was designed for, thus over heated it. I put a 120VAC boxer fan on it to cool it, and then mounted it to the rear rack so I could charge fast where ever I found a (L1) 120VAC outlet. I was able to secure charging at the College, so I was able to regain what I used during my classes. From a far I saw the students passing by would notice the Auranthetic, but not really spend much interest. Their main thoughts were why I was allowed to plug into the College's outlet. I put a paper notice on it explaining, but the students never spent time reading it. So, though they were not angry or upset that I was allowed to plug in at school, they did not think it was 'great', 'good', or cool. After class, and an enjoyable Electric ride to work, I too pulled my Electric mini bike inside the warehouse and was allowed to plug in. Co-workers were not happy that such a Big Guy would ride such a smallish bike (my knees were up banging against the handlebar on turns). They also did not like that I was allowed to plug it in at work. While no one unplugged or vandalized my ebike, I got plenty of daily dirty looks and snarky ending comments when dealing with coworkers. The Auranthetic served me well even after I was hired by hp. My wife drove the ice, and rode the Auranthetic. Much later when I got my Blazer EV from the converter, it was a different story. An Electric Blazer (!?!), they thought 'That's cool!'. Re: [EVDL] Charging at College and work: Employer EVSE installations ...
That's a very cool story, Bruce. Glad you shared it. I had no idea one could get an e-scooter back then - it certainly wasn't something that had even crossed my mind. In spite of the skepticism that you mention, just think of the few people who saw what you did and were inspired and how that help get us where we are today.
