Sol Motor’s new Pocket Rocket electric motorcycle looks nothing like many of the new e-motos we’ve covered recently. Perhaps that is why the company is pitching their new Pocket Rocket electric motorcycle as a completely new class of light electric vehicle. Sol Motor’s Pocket Rocket is something else entirely Stuttgart, Germany-based Sol Motors describes the Pocket Rocket as something in between a lower speed electric bicycle and a higher speed electric motorcycle. As described by the company: “The Pocket Rocket stands out due to the innovative synergy of lightweight design, performance and connectivity. The clear and contemporary design incorporates technology with a functional lifestyle for a modern riding experience. It’s not an e-bike: it’s too fast. It’s not a moped: it has no pedals. It’s a ‘noped’, defining a new category of electric two-wheelers. The Pocket Rocket is the perfect urban commuter vehicle.” The novel design is sure to turn heads, and has already won the company multiple awards including the European Product Design Award and the German Design Award. Pocket Rocket specs But if the design isn’t enough to win you over, maybe the specs will. Sol Motors is actually launching two models of the Pocket Rocket electric motorcycle, differentiated by their power and speed ratings. The Pocket Rocket is the standard model while the Pocket Rocket S is the go-faster model. The top speed is 50-80 km/h (31-50 mph) depending on the model. That puts the Pocket Rocket in the city commuter vehicle category, while the Pocket Rocket S lands somewhere between a city vehicle and one capable of highway speeds. The higher speed model features a 6 kW (8 hp) motor, while the lower speed model sports a motor of only 4 kW (5.4 hp). For comparison, most city commuter electric scooters feature motors in the 1.5 kW to 2.5 kW range, making the Pocket Rocket much peppier. Both feature a respectable 150 Nm (111 ft-lbs) of torque. The Pocket Rocket and the Pocket Rocket S are each rated for a range of 50-80 km (31-50 mi) depending on the riding mode, which is selectable between Eco, Sport and Wheelie. Presumably the Wheelie mode opens up the current limit of the electric motorcycle for max power, hence the name. Braking is accomplished with a combination of hydraulic disc brakes and regenerative braking via the rear wheel hub motor. Large street tires and dual suspension should smooth out the ride and take some of the work off the rather minimalist seat. LED lighting is incorporated directly into the main frame tube. The bike itself is fairly lightweight for an electric motorcycle, at 55 kg (121 lb). Like many new electric motorcycles and scooters, the Pocket Rocket is designed for connectivity, with an Android and iOS app that allows the rider’s phone to function like an instrument display. Sol Motors may also be targeting the electric scooter and motorcycle sharing market. The company has also designed a connectivity module for sharing and fleet management integration, which would position it to join the already booming LEV sharing market in Europe. While the Pocket Rocket isn’t yet available, the price is expected to be around €5,200 ($6,000) for the 4 kW version and €6,500 ($7,500) for the 6 kW version. If you want to grab a sneak peek in person and happen to be in Cologne, Germany from October 3-7th, you can visit Sol Motors at the INTERMOT International Motorcycle Fair. Electrek’s Take I’m all for new companies entering the market and trying out novel designs. This is definitely one of the more far out designs I’ve seen recently though. I honestly can’t tell if I like or not. On the one hand, I imagine it’d feel something like riding around on a drainage pipe with handlebars. But on the other hand, I love having something unique that no one else has. The minimalist and industrial design is definitely an eye catcher, and if it felt good in a test ride then I could actually see myself riding one of these. Plus, the higher power motor means that you can really have some fu

Volvo Trucks will deploy eight multiconfiguration battery Class 8 electric demonstration units with a gross vehicle weight of more than 30,000 pounds, and an additional 15 pre-commercial and commercial units, throughout California’s South Coast Air Basin. The demonstration units will be based on the technology being used in the Volvo FE Electric, which Volvo Trucks presented in May and will begin selling in Europe next year. The FE Electric was designed for heavier city distribution and refuse transport operations. “This is yet another important step towards our vision zero emissions. We are convinced that electrified truck transport will be a key driver of sustainable transports, and we’re proud to contribute the Volvo Group’s expertise to this innovative public-private partnership,” Volvo Trucks President Claes Nilsson said in a statement. The California Air Resources Board has preliminarily awarded $44.8 million to South Coast AQMD for the Volvo LIGHTS (Low Impact Green Heavy Transport Solutions) project, which will involve 16 partners. It also will transform freight operations at the facilities of two of the United States’ top trucking fleets, Dependable Highway Express and NFI, Volvo Trucks North America spokesman John Mies told Transport Topics. Dependable Highway Express is a unit of Los Angeles-based The Dependable Cos. NFI is based in Cherry Hill, N.J., and ranks No. 17 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in North America. A variety of smart technologies will be used, including remote diagnostics, geofencing and the company’s web-based service management platform, to monitor all truck performance aspects of the project and maximize vehicle uptime, according to the Gothenburg, Sweden-based company. Volvo’s initiative will occur against the backdrop of California’s goal of increasing the supply of zero-emission vehicles and charging and refueling stations in the state to get to 250,000 electric-vehicle charging stations and 200 hydrogen fueling stations and 5 million zero-emissions vehicles in California by 2030. “This is an excellent opportunity to show the end-to-end potential of electrification,” Volvo Trucks North America President Peter Voorhoeve said. “From solar energy harvesting at our customer locations, to electric vehicle uptime services, to potential second uses for batteries, this project will provide invaluable experience and data for the whole value chain.” VTNA is based in Greensboro, N.C. The project also will integrate nontruck battery-electric equipment, nonproprietary chargers and solar energy production equipment. It will reduce an estimated 3.57 tons of criteria pollutants, defined air pollutants and 3,020 tons of greenhouse gases annually. [EVDL] EVcrash: fatal railway accident> gov.nl bans Stint e-kid-carts
https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2018/10/02/world/dutch-ban-electric-carts-crash-kills-four-kids-fault-brakes/#.W7L7t89Oldg Dutch ban electric carts after crash kills four kids, fault brakes Oct 2, 2018 AFP-JIJI THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS – The Netherlands on Monday banned a popular type of electric cart involved in a horrific crash that killed four children, saying they may suffer from problems with their brakes. The youngsters from a daycare center died after their Stint vehicle was hit by a train on a grade crossing in the southeastern town of Oss on Sept. 20. The driver and another child were critically injured. Around 3,000 of the bathtub-shaped carts are in use with schools and nurseries around the country, but infrastructure minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen said they would no longer be allowed on the roads as of Tuesday. The minister had decided to suspend their use “as a precaution. “The first preliminary results give rise to doubts about the technical construction of the Stint. This could lead to the Stint not working or no longer braking,” the ministry said in a statement. Technical changes were also made to the design of the Stints without being submitted for approval with government agencies, it said. “The findings mentioned may pose a risk for the driver, the children and other road users. The ministry added that it was a “far-reaching decision with many practical consequences for the day care centers,” many of which rely on the vehicles to get around. Edwin Renzen, the founder of the Renzen company that makes the Stints, said the decision was premature. “This is based on a working hypothesis, that should not be a reason to ban all Stints on public roads immediately,” he told NOS broadcaster. Last month Renzen said that the accident was the “worst nightmare of any parent,” adding that he had spent “years” developing Stints. The company said Stints — which feature a Segway-type standing area for the driver at the back and a large plastic box at the front where children sit — are used to transport around 60,000 children a day. Reports in Dutch media said the 32-year-old woman driving the wagon had screamed for help and that she had said the brakes were not working. The cart had just dropped some children off at a local school and was on its way to another when the crash happened. Two of the dead children were from the same family. Re: [EVDL] EVLN: magnix.aero oil-cooled e-motor for Iron-Bird Cessna
Maybe not. For cars, you need to dissipate heat at low RPM - like going slowly up a steep hill. Small aircraft engines typically run at 2200 RPM and there isn't a whole lot of variance except during takeoff, when it will be full speed. I suspect that it is possible to optimize on the cooling. It’s eerily quiet, free of the buzz you expect from a propeller-propelled aircraft. Just the whoosh of air, like a ceiling fan spinning at full speed. It’s slow at first, then faster, to the point that the blades blur out of vision, and only the bright chrome center cone is visible, as engineers at the Magnix Systems Integration Laboratory on Australia’s Gold Coast push the rig, before powering it down to a silent stop. This is the start of airframe tests for a new motor, designed for the coming era of electric aviation. It’s a 350-horsepower machine that weighs just 110 pounds. But Magnix's engineers focus on a different metric. “We were able to achieve 5 kW per kilogram,” says CEO Roei Ganzarski, about double the power to weight ratio of a Tesla motor. In a car, that balance is less important. At worst, a few extra pounds will add a bit of time to a 0 to 60 mph sprint or knock a few miles off the car's range. But in a plane, the ongoing fight with gravity demands low weight coupled with high power. “If a plane doesn’t have the power to weight ratio that it needs, it simply won’t take off ,” Ganzarski says. "It becomes a safety issue." And just as automakers are coming around to the idea of electric drivetrains being more efficient, quieter, and more flexible, the aerospace industry is doing the same. Companies like Zunum, Eviation, and even NASA with the new X-57, are all exploring the idea of replacing engines, and eventually jets, with electric motors. Aviation is a significant, and growing, global contributor to climate change. Flying accounts for 12 percent of US transportation greenhouse gas emissions. Electric planes could run much more cleanly, using energy from renewable sources. They could also cut down on airline's jet fuel bills, which can run up from 10 to 50 percent of their operating costs. Magnix was founded in 2009 as an R&D firm working on all electrical motors, and has headquarters and another engineering facility in Redmond, Washington to go with its Australian outpost. It recruited talent from Airbus, Boeing, Tesla, and Pratt and Whitney, and quickly decided that it didn’t need to be limited to research—it could build what it takes to make these flying visions a reality. That meant tackling the bit that puts the plane in the air, which involves challenges beyond the power to weight issue. In a car, engineers can rely on air for at least some cooling effect, but that doesn't work at thousands of feet up, where the air is thin. So Magnix had to design and integrate an oil-based liquid cooling system into its motor, to get rid of excess heat. It’s also had to design its machine to be able to meet the rigorous requirements that getting safety approved for flight entails, with a close eye on materials and structural integrity. Failing in midair is a lot more serious than breaking down by the side of the road. “We haven’t invented any materials, nor how an electric motor can work, but we’ve put together the combination of what materials to use, in what configuration of coils, magnets, and liquid cooling to allow us to provide that power-to-weight ratio,” Ganzarski says. The airframe tests, where the motor has been bolted into the place a fuel-belching engine would usually sit, in the chopped-off front of a Cessna, will run for over 1,000 hours. Engineers are taking readings of t

John Roth, president and managing director of General Motors Africa and Middle East, said: “We are proud to support the Dubai government in its vision to make it a greener city. The Dubai Green Mobility Initiative has set some ambitious targets, including a 10 per cent penetration of alternate propulsion vehicles in government fleets by 2020. The Chevrolet Bolt EV will form the backbone of these fleets, starting with the world-famous Dubai Police fleet.” [© gulfnews.com] ... https://www.google.com/search?q=bolt+vs+ampera-e+sales+territory&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-1-ab search bolt vs ampera-e sales territory ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Bolt#Markets_and_sales Bolt Markets and sales ... GM plans to increase production of the Bolt starting in the fourth quarter, because global demand has exceeded supply: "Demand for the Chevrolet Bolt EV, especially in the United States, Canada, and South Korea, has outstripped production ... [EVDL] EVLN: Tower.cn reuses 2 million retired EV batteries
https://www.idtechex.com/research/articles/china-tower-can-absorb-2-million-retired-electric-vehicle-batteries-00015460.asp China Tower can 'absorb' 2 million retired electric vehicle batteries Sep 27, 2018 Dr Na Jiao [image / China Tower https://idtxs3.imgix.net/si/4/1E/66.png ] The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China has recently announced the pilot program of recycling and second use of retired electric vehicle batteries in 17 major regions and cities. China Tower, the world's biggest operator of telecommunication towers, is included as the only company in the pilot program to develop key technologies, explore business models and help establish standards related to second-life batteries. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China has recently announced the pilot program of recycling and second use of retired electric vehicle batteries in 17 major regions and cities. China Tower, the world's biggest operator of telecommunication towers, is included as the only company in the pilot program to develop key technologies, explore business models and help establish standards related to second-life batteries. China has a strong momentum on developing solutions and standards for retired batteries from electric and hybrid electric vehicles which are expected to grow explosively over the next ten years, hitting over 100GWh per year by 2029. For more information, please see IDTechEx's latest report on Second-life Electric Vehicle Batteries. Back to January 2018, China Tower announced partnerships with more than 16 major Chinese EV and battery manufacturers including BYD, Guoxuan High Tech, and YinLong New Energy on second-life electric vehicle batteries. China Tower has close to 2 million telecom towers across China, with around 54GWh battery storage demand for back-up power for their telecom base stations. One single tower needs about 30kWh back-up battery (equivalent to one electric vehicle battery pack) which means in the future the storage demand from the telecom base station back-up only could absorb up to 2 million retired electric vehicle batteries. Currently, there are only 2% Li-ion batteries deployed in China Tower - the majority of the storage batteries are still lead-acid batteries. It is estimated that China Tower spends around CNY20 billion on the back-up lead-acid batteries. China Tower has been testing second-life electric vehicle batteries as replacement of lead-acid batteries in their telecom base stations across China since 2015. Although somewhat degraded, second-life batteries could still perform better in terms of lifetime degradation and energy density than lead-acid batteries, and they are much cheaper than new Li-ion batteries. In China, currently second-life batteries are priced at the same level as lead-acid batteries (around $100/kWh). China Tower claimed that since 2018 they are not going to purchase lead-acid batteries anymore and all the old lead-acid batteries will be replaced by second-life batteries in the future. China Tower has long-term steady demand for second-life batteries on a large-scale and the support of the government as the 'demonstration corporation' which makes them the biggest customer of second-life batteries. They are definitely a 'winner' in this business because they get batteries that have better lifetime performance but at the same price as lead-acid batteries. It is not clear whether in the future they are still able to obtain second-life batteries at such a low price. With the volume of second-life batteries as well as the storage demand increases, China Tower is expected to face more and more market competition and the pricing mechanism will change accordingly. More detailed analysis of the cost and pricing of second-life batteries is included in IDTechEx's latest report on Second-life Electric Vehicle Batteries.
