They are harbingers of the future for electric-only vehicles with sales nationally and locally gradually increasing year to year. Richard Badley, of Fort Valley, was recently charging his 3-week old Tesla Model X SUV that cost nearly $100,000 and beaming ear to ear. “We got it three weeks ago,” said Badley, 61, at the time. “It’s been six years in the dreaming and it surpasses all our dreams.” Badley and his wife Mary are early adopters, joining other Shenandoah Valley residents like Charles Hagen and wife Judy of Frederick County, owners of a Chevy Bolt; Chris Daniels of Clarke County, owner of a Nissan Leaf and Rick Pomeroy of Winchester, owner of a Tesla 3. They, and other electric-only vehicle owners in the area, believe in protecting the environment, driving for less money (saving on gasoline prices and maintenance), and enjoying a quiet, quick car. Daniels, 63, has been driving an electric Nissan Leaf for more than five years, saying, “It is very practical, despite a range of about 80 miles.” Owner of 0 to 60 Energy Café at Winchester’s Delco Plaza on Route 50, Daniels commutes daily, driving his 2012 Leaf between the restaurant and his home in Clarke County, a 16-mile round trip. “It’s a cheap mode of transportation, there is very low maintenance, you don’t have to change the oil and you don’t have to buy gas,” he said. “You just go home every night, plug it in, and when you get up, it’s ready to go.” “It’s the economy car, not like a Tesla, which is really quick,” Daniels said. He has driven to Dulles and recharged the Nissan Leaf there but he is hesitant to do it again because as electric vehicles become more popular he worries about a charging bay being available. (Dulles has only six bays.) Like some others, he has a gasoline-powered backup, a 2008 Toyota Highlander hybrid for longer trips. “I’d love to have a Tesla with its range but the price point on those…. it will be my next buy, though.” Range anxiety is the main reason most drivers in surveys say they are apprehensive about an electric car with the battery becoming almost drained and no place to recharge. “I still have anxiety, but one shouldn’t,” said Badley, 61, who drove his 2019 Tesla X to Fayetteville, North Carolina – more than 350 miles one way – with the Tesla X’s EPA estimated range of 295 miles. “People shouldn’t worry,” said his wife. “Tesla shapes your travel for you and makes it a journey after you put in your destination. It tells you where to stop (for recharge) and it only takes 30 minutes.” Tesla locates it’s SuperCharger stations near where there are available restrooms, Wi-Fi, restaurants, lodgings, shopping and attractions, all noted on the navigation screen for drivers to consider while the vehicle is being recharged. “You get to your destination refreshed,” said Badley. Charles Hagen, a retired anesthesiologist and self-described environmental activist, bought a 2017 electric Chevrolet Bolt in January but soon lost time behind the wheel to his wife. They had previously bought a 2017 Subaru because wife Judy said, “I am a devoted Subaru person.” “She drove (the Bolt) to church one morning and I never got it back,” said Hagen, who now mostly drives the Subaru. “For me, it’s a fun thing,” Judy Hagen said. “It’s splendidly comfortable and quiet. I am not interested in speed. It gets people interested, and I hope, to think more positively about electric vehicles.” Her husband added, “I love to drive it too, but I am glad Judy drives it.” The Bolt’s range is 225 miles. “More people see me because I do more driving than he does,” she echoed. I needed that on Wednesday when I was at a strip mall going to the Best Buy. A guy was walking in the middle of the parking lane fully concentrated on his cell phone and I waited 15 seconds stopped before this guy realized there was a Volt in front of him! An electrostatic shock would have been better than the sound effects, even if the Volt is quiet, who is that clueless walking in a parking lot? And this guy was middle aged, surprising he made it this far without getting run over!! Some Taycan test mules have two exhaust tips, others have four. But none of
them generate exhaust. What's going on here?
Back before Porsche revealed it would be putting its all-electric Taycan
sedan into production, it put two fake exhaust tips on the bumper of its
test mules to confuse onlookers and spy photographers. Strangly, now that
the car has been announced, Porsche still continues to run these fake
exhaust tips on Taycan test mules. Watching this most recent spy video from
the Nurburgring, I noticed something interesting: Porsche, for some reason,
is running two different types of fake exhaust tips on its electric cars.
Huh?
Earlier this year, we saw a Taycan drifting around the Nurburgring in
spectacular fashion, sporting two large fake exhaust tips, one per side. In
this new video, though, we see at least two different Taycans: One with the
original dual-pipe setup, and another with a quad-exit setup, two per side,
similar to the exhausts on the current Panamera Turbo. The main thing I'm
wondering is, why did Porsche go through the trouble of adding a new set of
fake exhaust tips when the car's already been made official? Are different
power or trim levels demarcated by different fake exhaust setups? My only
other guess is the engineering team is using different style decoy exhausts
to differentiate between multiple test mules—though that's purely
speculation.
We'll probably never know for sure why these cars have differentiating fake
exhausts, but it's still interesting to point out ...

That’s the logic behind the 2+X series of concept vehicles that GAC revealed at the Guangzhou Auto Show yesterday. Today, the vehicle fleet only really works well for about 80 percent of the population, said Zhang Fan, vice president and head of design for GAC Automotive Research and Development Center. The other 20 percent either use a vehicle not very suited to their needs or move around in some other fashion. This is the audience that GAC wants to reach with the 2+X vehicles, should they ever be put into production. Fan asked rhetorically, “EVs are a big thing in China, but when we keep producing sedans and SUVs, are they really the best solutions?” The 2+X concepts don’t have a long range — maybe 50 or 80 kilometers — which means a small battery pack that lets you do a lot with the overall design. All of the 2+X concepts are based on the same two-seat, all-electric platform with a 1.97-meter wheelbase. That’s where the “2” in the name comes from. The three EVs on display in China had the same scissor doors and instrument panels, but for the rest of the features, specific applications are the name of the game. They each have an “X-factor,” Fan said, which is the other half of the name. Here’s how each one is unique: 2U: For the young, independent lady Designed for a queen — or someone who thinks of herself as one — the 2U is laser focused on the lifestyle of a single woman who lives in the city. The target audience is a strong woman, but one who’s also girly, Fan said. The interior materials are feminine, with rose gold accents and soft fabrics. The driver’s seat is really more of a throne, with the passenger seat something like a bench seat that cuddles up to the main seat. This allows anyone riding with the lady in charge to feel close to her, Fan said. In the 2U’s small trunk, there’s space for everyday items: a water bottle, a gym bag, and headphones. Up front, there are special bags for shoes (two extra pairs) and slipper-looking pedals. The royalty motif is emphasized by a crown design on the outside of the seats. 2ALL: For all the people The 2ALL is the 2+X model that is most like something car fans may have seen before. Designed with carsharing in mind, the 2ALL features more durable materials inside. The seats are strong and lightweight, with lots of storage options placed around the vehicle. There’s enough space under the seats for a a small bag. There are separated sections in the trunk for small pieces of luggage. And there’s a horizontal frunk that will fit a 28-inch suitcase. There’s even a little transparent window from the cabin to the frunk so you can see quickly if there’s something there that you forgot. But, well, if you’re headed to the airport in your shared car and you forget your luggage but somehow remember to look at a little shin-level window, that’d be quite a feat. On top of the 2ALL is a light indicator that can be used to let people know if the car is available (green), occupied (red), or reserved (orange), in the example Fan gave. 2US: for elderly people in the city Empty nesters with places to go, that’s who the 2US is designed for. Retirees don’t often need a big car and don’t drive fast, Fan said, and the current crop of city EVs are low quality. One of Tesla’s newest features, dubbed TeslaCam, acts as a built-in dashcam
to capture various events.
This clip catches the moments leading up to and following a motorcycle
versus car crash. The motorcycle rider appears shaken, but not seriously
injured.
Let’s hope that this acts as a reminder to car drivers to always check your
blindspot and to motorcycle riders to be mindful of how difficult it is to
be seen while attempting such a move.
According to Tesla’s release notes on TeslaCam, after one prepares a USB
drive according to instructions, footage from the front-facing camera will
be stored on the USB.

I remember these- vaguely. IIRC, they were a conversion done by a third party (one of the first, I think), but either certified by Ford, or sold directly by Ford.
