[EVDL] (better than before) EV newswire: "dry spell" over?

Bruce, It's seems you are finding a wide variety of EV articles these days,
having a positive disposition. I recall you stating not so many months ago
that there was a lot of negative press with little new, interesting
material. Do you feel that has flipped?
]

Bottom line: yes, there are more EV news items than before. Qualifier: all
this free work I do that others read, link to, or post elsewhere with their
name on it (+ the evdl has EV media outlet lurkers that pickup on my work
and our discussions for embellishment for their profit purposes), is still a
feast or famine feed situation (that statement has several meanings).

-There are times of the week when reporters and writers are offline and
don't put out/submit anything.

-Those reporters and writers are dependent on auto-shows to make splash
presentations of EV models. The shows had slowed down in the past.

-And automaker managers have been going through serious head/brain changes
lately (yet many in upper management still have too-old / ice thinking).

But things have improved. I am not seeing the scraping of the sides and
bottom of the EV news barrel (where old items are re-posted as new, etc.).
No, a change in the wind
http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/The-Tesla-Effect-automakers-nod-what-Tesla-has-done-tp4692012.html
and the usual end-of-year-push is having an effect.

As our evdl sysmgr said
http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/Will-GM-Ford-buyouts-cuts-layoffs-affect-EV-production-tp4691901p4691990.html

IMO, major automakers are focused on a global market. Asia& EU, and soon the
rest of the Americas (Canada, Mexico, central & south) are dictating serious
change in automakers markets.

The positive affect EVs have is global which is why I include EV news items
earth wide. Happily, non-U.S. nations are not stuck with the U.S.-Fed
resistant-to-change (1860's style) thinking of 'make fossil-profits great
again'.

Those non-U.S. nations have no choice, as major Asian, EU, & other cities
are choked with pollution.
https://www.google.com/search?q=cities+choked+with+pollution

The above pollution news items are not the subject of topic for evdl
posting. So, I only post a few of these in reference to EV news items to
infer the reason those nations' EV-interest is growing in those regions
(its a tight-rope for me to walk as to what I can post, how often, and what
is free to read or you have to subscribe if you want more. I will never be
able to make everyone happy, so I just try to carry on, and do my best with
what I find).

Even though the EV news items seem better (more abundant), the cesspool
searches I have to wade through, multiple times a day to get these items,
still have plenty of negative, (koch-bros) dis-information, and non-EV items
worded as EVs (they throw in wording like 'just as good', or 'clean as an
EV' so news search engines will find their newswire items, etc. - fcvs, cng,
diesel, +more).

Yup, its a lot of work I am not paid for, but as long as the EV-cause word
gets out, EVangels are informed, and can carry-on the good fight :-)

BTW, some will note a change in my posting style. Sometimes I will see where
it is possible I might be thrown into a va hospital bed and be offline for
days. So, I have taken to posting a couple of days worth of EVLN posts at a
time (to keep my head above water, sort of speak). i.e. this Wed., Thur., &
Fri., I have va appointments. There is a good chance, I will return
exhausted, or just possibly the va dr won't let me leave and just walk me
over to ER
(yup, my life is not my own anymore, my health eats up a lot of my time
now).

Not to bore the evdl with my medical issues, but if I have to go under the
Dr.'s knife again, I am hoping the surgery can be planned and prepared for,
and the medical bed I am kept at will have 4g I can teather off of (I bought
my phone and laptop last hospital time I needed a heart restart -
inversion).
This week will be cardio, thyroid, and eyesight (oh, what fun getting old
is). If the va can keep me healthy enough to continue to hang out with
Willie at the annual NDEW EV show EVents, my life still has purpose :-)

[EVDL] The “Tesla Effect”> automakers nod @what Tesla has done

Tesla earns nod of respect from legacy auto for pushing sustainable

The Tesla Semi and the next-generation Roadster
]

It took multiple bet-the-company situations, trips to “production hell,” and
a massive push towards profitability in the third quarter, but Tesla has
pretty much become the undeniable leader in premium electric mobility. With
the Model 3 proving to be a success in the United States and getting a lot
of interest in markets such as Europe and Asia, Tesla is practically
becoming an inconvenient truth to traditional automakers — particularly
those that have held off on the development of zero-emissions vehicles.

Earlier this year, Paul Sankey of Mizuho Securities noted during a segment
on CNBC that the “Tesla Effect” [
https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-stock-tsla-outperform-rating-430-price-target-accelerating-growth-tech-advantage/
] is starting to spill over to industries beyond the car market. Sankey
described the Tesla Effect as a trend that pushes the idea that the 21st
century will be driven by clean electricity in the same way that the 20th
century was driven by oil. Among legacy carmakers, this particular shift is
starting to become notable.

Recently, executives from a number of established automakers acknowledged
Tesla’s contribution to the evolution of sustainable transportation. In a
recent interview with the Los Angeles Times [
https://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-hy-auto-show-porsche-taycan-qa-20181130-story.html
], for example, Porsche North America Chief Executive Klaus Zellmer
validated Tesla’s breakthroughs in the electric car market, praising the
company for its “astonishing” work.

“If you look at what Tesla has done, if you look at their volume and look at
their price level, it’s truly astonishing. If you can do that with one brand
and a sales network that is not comprised of dealers and a real sales
organization, it’s even more astonishing,” he said.

Hope King of Cheddar inquired about Tesla while speaking with executives
from several legacy carmakers during the 2018 LA Auto Show as well. Just
like Porsche’s Zellner, the execs from the establishes carmakers also
admitted that Tesla’s progress over the years had affected their business [
https://twitter.com/lisahopeking/status/1068391626677063680
] and the industry as a whole.

Audi of America senior product manager Anthony Foulk noted that Tesla has
“pushed the entire auto industry forward and broken ground for some
different topics in the industry.” Foulk pointed out that Tesla is among the
reasons why Audi opted to release the e-tron SUV [
https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-electric-cars-mastery-audi-etron-reveal/
], an electric vehicle that is “meant to be accessible to a wide portion” of
the market. Volkswagen of America Sales and Marketing executive Derrick
Hatami echoed Foulk’s observations, stating that Tesla has provided an
“interesting window into what the possibilities could be for electric
vehicles and future retail models for the auto industry.” Hatami further
remarked that the electric car maker had given other automakers “something
to look at and aim for” with regards to the development of EVs.

Masahiro Moro, the President and CEO of Mazda’s North American operations,
lauded Tesla for its tendency to boldly break through conventions and adopt
strategies that are experimental at best. Moro noted that with Tesla in the
market, “we (legacy carmakers) have to look at ourselves to see if there are
unmet needs of consumers so we can innovate our process.” Bugatti President
Stephan Winkelmann also validated Tesla’s contributions to the car market,
stating that the electric car maker has “pushed the car industry in one
direction,” while allowing other companies to admit that “social acceptance
is key for the future of every car manufacturer.”

Gorden Wagener, Chief Designer of Mercedes-Benz, was optimistic about
Tesla’s breakthroughs, particularly when it comes to the features and
capabilities of vehicles on the road. Wagener noted that Tesla’s approach to
its electric cars is encouraging other companies to “change this industry in
the next 10 years more than in the 100 years before” — something that the
designer admitted is a “very exciting to do.”

Tesla’s mission has been clear since day one — it aims to accelerate the
world’s transition to renewable energy. Elon Musk has reiterated this
multiple times, and the company itself has admitted that Tesla cannot push
the transition to sustainability on its own. In the auto sector, other
companies — particularly legacy carmakers that already have large
manufacturing infrastructures —

Capacity bars are not linear.
The 12 bar display is actually anything from 85% to 100% capacity.
Below that, every bar stands for 6.25% if I am not mistaken (quoting from
memory)
So 7 bar capacity can be as low as 100 – 15 – 4 x 6.25% = 60% so less than
15kWh.
Also, there is a reason it is called the GOM (Guess-O-Meter).
My Leaf has 8 capacity bars. I can drive home and go from 12 quickly to 10 or 9
and then arrive home with only 6 or 7 bars left.
Then drive to work starting with that half charge and arrive at work with still
3 bars left….
I have noticed that range bars are not linear, so you can’t say X bars is so
many kWh left.
GIDs are a better measurement, so use LeafSpy and you can much better judge
what your Leaf is doing.
Hope this helps,
Cor.

Subject: [EVDL] poor 2011 Leaf performance

Anyone want to take a stab at this mystery - poor performance of my 2011
Leaf ?

Temp about 45F
Heat on: drawing average of about 1 kW
"other systems" drawing about .25 kW
Drove 14 miles, went from 12 range bars to 5 bars (full charge level is
9 capacity bars)
Average 3.2 miles / kWh
Duration about 1 hr.
Driving pretty carefully - usually only 2 "balls" on the usage meter.

For electrical systems, I estimate I used about 1.25 kWh.
For traction, 14 / 3.2 = about 4.5 kWh
Total: 5.75 kWh.

According to
https://electrolease.nz/blog/nissan-leaf-range-charts-and-tables.html
5 bars equates to about 45% charge remaining.

Assuming that the capacity bars are linear and I'm between 8 and 9, the
battery should have somewhere near 17 kWh (24 originally).

45% of that is about 7.5 kWh remaining charge.
Add in what I've used, 5.75, makes 13.25 kW - but should be around 17.

Plus extrapolating the mileage: 14 / 45% = 31 miles estimated total
range.

What happened to the other 4 kWh?

And, am I the only one who get 31 miles per charge? This Leaf has had
miserable winter range since the beginning. Still don't know why.

Tesla vehicles are becoming increasingly popular with police departments
around the world and now a fleet of Tesla Model X electric SUVs is being
converted to patrol vehicles in Switzerland.

They are showing us how they are doing it with some interesting videos and
images.

It can raise some eyebrows when a police service buys a ~$100,000 vehicle as
a cruiser, but the Basel police department says that it is actually buying
Model Xs to save money.

Earlier this year, they announced that they are replacing 7 diesel cruisers
with 7 Tesla Model X 100Ds.

The police said that the vehicles end up each costing about 49,000 Francs
more than their usual diesel cruiser, but they expect that the Tesla
vehicles will be better long-term investments due to “significantly lower
costs for operation and maintenance and a higher resale value.”

They have now received the vehicles and they have been preparing them to
soon go into operation.

On their Instagram (@kantonspolizei_baselstadt), they have been documenting
the transformation with interesting images:

In the pictures, you can see the extent of the modifications needed to
install those police lights and other accessories.

Some of the Model X 100D SUVs are already ready and about half the fleet is
going on the road as soon as next week.

They released a quick video that should give you an idea of what it would be
like seeing the MOdel X in your rearview mirror:

The Basel-Stadt canton police are deploying the biggest fleet of Tesla
vehicles for police patrol vehicles that we have seen to date, but they are
not the only ones working on going electric and especially using Tesla
vehicles.

Tesla vehicles are becoming strangely popular with police departments all
over the world.

In the US, the Los Angeles Police Department and the Denver Police
Department are both using Model S sedans as part of their fleets.

In Europe, Scotland Yard says that it is considering the vehicle and the
Luxembourg Police converted two Model S sedans to patrol cars.

The Ontario Police also recently received a brand new Model X, which they
also converted to a police vehicle.

For 2018/19, there is now a funky All-Electric version of the venerable
Smart Car. Hard to believe the little Smart car had been around for ten
years now. It still keeps the same format, a unique looking, tiny, two door
–two seater car with a teeny hatchback. It is available as a hardtop or
cabrio as tested.

There has been restyling and changes to the exterior and interior, but it is
still identifiably a Smart Car. The All Electric Smart car will now be the
only Smart Car available to buy in Canada as the gas powered model is phased
out of showrooms. New changes include an updated digital dash display for
the Smart EV’s current charge, and a better charging system.

The Smart Electric is powered by a Three-phase synchronous 60-kW motor,
17.6-kWh battery and is teamed up with an Electric Drive transmission. The
on-board charger is rated at 7.2 kW, which means it can charge 80 per cent
of the battery in two-and-a-half hours when plugged into a 32-amp power
source. The hardtop Smart Car offers 160 km of gas-free driving range
officially, while the cabriolet’s range is officially 155 kilometres, five
kilometres less due to the extra 30 kilograms of strengthening. Actual
range, as with all EV Vehicle is also dependent on driving style, passenger
and cargo load, terrain and other factors.

The Smart, with its small size is a delight to whizz around in around the
city. Maneuvering in and around tight spaces is easy. Excellent visibility
and the airy cabin offer a great driving experience, even better with the
top down on the cabrio! The light weight coupled with the instant torque of
the electric motor only compliments the fun-to-drive factor. While braking
feel for an EV is a revelation. Zero-to-100 km/h takes just over 11
seconds, and the car’s top speed is 130 km/h.

Downsides are the rough ride due in part to the short wheelbase and skinny
tires. It is also expensive considering what you get. However ever widely
available government incentives in some Canadian provinces can offset the
purchase cost. British Columbia offers a rebates of $5,000 – if you buy an
electric car. The Smart RV is very much a niche car. Dedicated buyers will
no doubt be enthralled by the unique, quirky design, improved and refined.
With zero emissions, the Smart EV is the ultimate city car that’s well
recommended.

External independent test firm blamed for failing to apply correct WLTP
procedures

The official range of the electric Kia e-Niro has been downgraded after the
firm discovered a external test agency hadn't followed correct procedures
for the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP).

As a result, the higher-spec 64kWh e-Niro now has an official range of 282
miles rather than 301 miles, while the 39.2 kWh e-Niro is rated at 179 miles
rather than 193 miles.

All new cars to be sold in the European Union are subject to the WLTP test
procedure, which was introduced this autumn. Kia says that the independent
organisation overseeing the test process accidentally provided an incorrect
testing methodology and then approved the results it generated.

This led to the e-Niro being tested for a disproportionate length of time on
the WLTP urban cycle, comprising lower overall vehicle speeds and a reduced
energy requirement, resulting in an over-estimation of the vehicle’s
all-electric range.

Kia itself then discovered the wrong result during ongoing homologation work
for another new Kia electric vehicle.

The firm is now contacting customers who have bought the car - which doesn't
go on sale in the UK until early 2019 - to explain the changes.

It is not currently clear if the related Hyundai Kona electric, or any other
vehicles tested by the agency, will be similarly effected.

In independent Real Range testing by What Car?, conducted on its own test
route, the 64kWh Kia e-Niro achieved the second equal highest range of any
electric car to date, recording a range of 253 miles. That was matched by
the Jaguar I-Pace.

The Hyundai Kona recorded the highest Real Range, at 259 miles.

BMW i3

BMW Australia has confirmed its all-electric i3 and i3s models available in
Australia from February next year will have double the range of its
predecessor, with a new increased capacity battery to deliver double the
original distance of driving on a single charge.

The 42kWh battery replaces last year’s 33kW battery, and will be increased
from the original 2013 60Ah configuration to 120Ah, keeping the battery size
the same as before but instead delivering 260km range, according to BMW.

From February 2019, the BMW i3 with 125kW motor output will grace Australian
showrooms, priced from $68,700 (MSRP (that is after GST and taxes, but
before on-road costs and dealer fees), while the enhanced performance i3s
with 135kW motor output will be priced from $69,900 (MSRP).

“BMW has once again demonstrated its technical capability in the EV space
with the latest BMW i3 120Ah,” said BMW Group Australia CEO, Vikram Pawah in
a statement.

“Effectively doubling the real-world driving range from the i3’s 2013 global
introduction, the newest addition to our BMW i stable remains a trailblazer.

“Beyond that, the constant evolution of materials and specification, as well
as the i3s sports- focused variant, makes the car more relevant than ever,”
he said.

As for charging, both models come standard with a Type 2 charging plug for
single and three-phase AC charging, as well as a domestic charging cable for
those wanting to simply charge at home on their usual electricity
connection.

While charging through a standard domestic cable will take 19.5 hours from 0
to 80%, 9.7 hours through a BMW single-phase Wallbox or 3.2 hours through a
three-phase Wallbox, both models can also be charged via a 50kW DC fast
charger in as little as 42 minutes.

BMW i3 charging

In both models, a wireless phone charger, ‘Loft’ interior design and
built-in nav on a 10.25-inch touchscreen all come as standard – as well as
Apple CarPlay, which previously cost $623 extra as an option.

Also standard is Driving Assistant Plus provides safety features including
active cruise control, speed limit info, and forward collision and
pedestrian warning systems, as well as parking assistant features including
a rear view camera, park distance control and fully automated parallel
parking assistant.

Other standard connectivity features include real-time traffic information,
intelligent emergency calls, concierge services and USB map updates.

The BMW 13s model also comes standard with 20-inch double-spoke alloy
wheels, sport mode driving, a traction control system, sport suspension and
steering.

Samsung to build electric vehicle battery pack factory in Auburn Hills
Nov. 27, 2018 Ann Zaniewski

Samsung plans to build a $62 million electric vehicle battery pack factory
in Auburn Hills that will create more than 400 jobs, the Michigan Economic
Development Corporation has announced.

The facility will be Samsung SDI America Inc.'s first high-volume automotive
battery pack manufacturing facility in the U.S.

“We’re excited Samsung SDI America has expanded its footprint in Oakland
County and chosen Auburn Hills for its new technical center,” Oakland County
Executive L. Brooks Patterson said in a news release. “The company, with
investment of more than $62 million and the creation of 461 highly skilled
positions, has clearly demonstrated its faith in our educated workforce and
our county. It’s a strong vote of confidence.”

Samsung SDI America, Inc., headquartered in San Jose, Calif., chose Michigan
over "strong domestic and international competition," the MEDC said.

The company is to receive a $10 million Michigan Business Development
Program performance-based grant. Auburn Hills officials are expected to
approve a property tax abatement in support of the project, according to the
news release.

“We are honored that Samsung SDI America, Inc. has chosen to continue its
growth in Auburn Hills," Auburn Hills Mayor Kevin McDaniel said. "This new
investment and creation of jobs will allow Samsung SDI Inc. to continue
developing technologies in automotive battery back manufacturing. We
appreciate their confidence and reinvestment in our community."

Samsung SDI America, Inc. is a subsidiary of Samsung SDI Co., Ltd., which
makes rechargeable batteries for the IT and auto industries, as well as
energy storage systems. It also makes materials used to produce
semiconductors, displays and solar panels.

Samsung has 130 Michigan-based employees and more than 20,000 employees
worldwide.

to over just €10,000 for the base ICE version. As a result, only a few
thousand annually were sold in Europe.

Recently, VW decided to decrease the price by €3,925 to €22,975 – still a
lot, but at least a move in the proper direction ...

In 2019, the future e-up! is expected to get a next-generation version, also
available as the Seat e-Mii and Skoda e-Citigo. Range is expected to
increase to 270 km (168 miles) WLTP with a starting price below €20,000.

Quick specs:
  - 60 kW/82 hp and 210 Nm electric motor
  - 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 13 seconds

[EVDL] The Autoettes of Long Beach: electric cars before they were cool • Long Beach Post

2018-12-04 Thread Darryl McMahon via EV

https://lbpost.com/life/autoette-electric-cart-long-beach-history/

As we discuss the relative merits of Tesla Model 3s vs. Kias with 64 kWh
packs, it's nice to see some reference to the EVs which never actually
died out, with a welcome dash of humour.

Photo and video in the online article.

If someone can get to Larry Fisher's presentation on Saturday afternoon
(Dec. 8th 1-3 p.m. - at the Historical Society of Long Beach Gallery -
4260 Atlantic Ave., Long Beach) and report back to the list, I would
appreciate it.

Re: [EVDL] Tesla battery cells (no BMS) burst into flame...

2018-12-04 Thread Damon Henry via EV
I've never used a BMS on any of my setups. It's true that this presents a
risk, but knowing your battery chemistry and charging parameters can go a long
way... I have exploded batteries, but not in a way that a BMS would detect. I
did it the old fashioned way... ignite the hydrogen 😊

I still don’t know what actually caused the fault.

From what I watched on the video and previous ones on that project they’re
still in the preliminary planning stages. It appears the pack was not
connected to anything, just placed in the car. Is that correct?

Which would suggest it spontaneously failed - something I’ve never heard of and
tell customers never happens. Worrying as I have 10 Tesla Model S modules
sitting waiting to go into a couple projects!

Perhaps there was a defect in the module? Or it was removed from its plastic
casing and rested against something conductive?!

I would like to know what actually caused the initial failure before thermal
runaway.

Re: [EVDL] Tesla battery cells (no BMS) burst into flame...

2018-12-04 Thread Cor van de Water via EV
The video does not specify what went wrong to cause the first cell(s) into
thermal runaway and catch on fire.
The Tesla Li cells may potentially do that if (internally) shorted due to
manufacturing defect or failure to maintain them within required voltage range.
The cells may have been charged before placing them into the vehicle,
especially if the pack was low beforehand it is tempting to put a charge on
them for fear of them going dead, or the pack module may have rested on some
metal parts (rear diff or frame support) that touched the pack in more than one
place and shorted it. I hope Rich will post another update on the car to tell
the whole story.
It is easy for a dead pack (which has high internal resistance) to share
charging voltage unevenly, causing some cells to get excessive voltage due to
those cells being the *lowest* in Soc, highest in resistance and thus get the
most charge voltage. The other thing of cause is that the pack may have
discharged to the point that some cells were at zero (or even reversed, which
is even more damaging) while still in the dead Tesla and then charged without
BMS before being placed in the car. But that is all speculation right now. Fact
is that at least 1 cell had a thermal runaway, started spitting fire and
eventually the entirely of the two modules burned in a spectacular fireworks
spitting burning cells in all directions…
Cor.

The "live ammo" question from the firefighters is telling. It DID look and

Maybe a minor hit, but from what I've read, most EU and Asian automakers are
now focusing more on -- duh -- the EU and Asia. With the way politics has
gone here in the US, I'm sure it didn't take a crystal ball for them to
predict what was going to happen to the US EV market.

There's certainly some difference in environmental attitudes between the
different sides of the aisle in other nations, but usually it's much less
dramatic and polarized than it is here in the states. So I expect that
regardless of the how politics develops in the EU and Asia, they, not the
US, will become the primary EV growth areas in the future. In fact, some
countries have already announced a "drop dead" year for ICEVs, though some
of them are pretty far off (such as 2040).

Interesting times, indeed.
