[EVDL] Renault,FCA merger> Nissan is “outside the mosquito net”(kaya no soto)
https://apnews.com/bad101ca0a874d2db7e976add26c49ba Renault’s FCA merger move leaves partner Nissan in the cold June 4, 2019 YURI KAGEYAMA [image https://storage.googleapis.com/afs-prod/media/1ce7e9eed5114bc2833c045ff61a98a5/2000.jpeg ] TOKYO (AP) — Some Japanese are using an old expression to describe how Nissan was left out of talks that led to the proposed merger between its French alliance partner Renault and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles: “kaya no soto.” That translates to “outside the mosquito net,” or the unlucky person outside the net, getting bitten while others are safe inside. In other words, the odd man out. Nissan Motor Co. wasn’t consulted in advance about the proposed merger announced last week, which would create the world’s third-biggest automaker, trailing only Volkswagen AG and Toyota Motor Corp. In a statement Tuesday, Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa raised doubts about his company’s continued participation in a longtime alliance with Renault if the merger goes through. A deal merger would “significantly alter” the alliance structure, he said. “This would require a fundamental review of the existing relationship between Nissan and Renault,” Saikawa wrote. “From the standpoint of protecting Nissan’s interests, Nissan will analyze and consider its existing contractual relationships and how we should operate business in the future.” Renault’s board met Tuesday and delayed a decision on whether to launch merger talks with FCA. The board will convene again Wednesday to study the proposal. Even if it greenlights merger talks, the process of consultations with unions, the French government, antitrust regulators and others is likely take about a year. In any case, Nissan doesn’t appear to have much say. The Yokohama-based automaker is 43% owned by Renault and holds 15% of its French partner. Nissan’s position has weakened since the November arrest of its former chairman, Carlos Ghosn, for alleged financial misconduct. The star executive was credited with leading Renault’s rescue of Nissan from near bankruptcy 20 years ago. In recent years, until 2018, Nissan had been more profitable than Renault, with a solid reputation for quality and innovation and strong model lineup that includes the March subcompact, Leaf electric car and Infiniti luxury models. Partnering with what could be a behemoth Renault-Fiat Chrysler would bring merits of scale, the savings that come from sharing platforms, components and research costs at a time when all the world’s automakers are rushing to develop energy-efficient and autonomous-driving technology. Saikawa acknowledged potential benefits in his statement, saying that the addition of FCA would expand opportunities for collaboration and further synergies. But analysts warn such size would pose major coordination and decision-making headaches. Nissan might also simply be dwarfed by its alliance partners. “There is risk that Nissan will not be able to maintain its independence, its own brand power,” said Tatsuo Yoshida, senior analyst at Sawakami Asset Management in Tokyo. “It’s like the saying: Too many cooks spoil the broth.” Reflecting widespread opinion, Yoshida said Nissan can’t afford to break with Renault: After two decades together, the automakers — and smaller alliance partner Mitsubishi Motors Corp. — share too many operations and products. Breaking free would take at least several years, spanning the product cycle of a vehicle, the time it takes from the design stage to the next model change. “They’re already at the point of no return, like a couple that simply cannot get a divorce this late in the game,” he added. In the intensely competitive auto world, going it alone would be perilous for Nissan, or any automaker, though there are a few exceptions, such as Japanese rival Honda Motor Co. Despite longtime speculation about a full merger with Renault, Nissan has resisted. Should Renault merge with FCA, which combined the American and Italian automakers, the partnership will become even more unbalanced. In theory, Nissan models and Chrysler models don’t overlap in the U.S. market, so there might be ways they could complement each other. But it’s unclear whether the companies will want such a partnership. In the meantime, Nissan is grappling with problems of its own. Ghosn’s arrest has tarnished Nissan’s reputation and left it with something of a leadership vacuum, given his vast influence over the company before prosecutors arrested him on charges of under-reporting compensation and breach of trust. Ghosn insists he is innocent but his trial has yet to start and is likely to take months. Saikawa has vowed to beef up the company’s corporate governance. Nissan’s profit for the fiscal year that ended in March tumbled to 319.1 billion yen ($2.9 billion), down from 746.9 billion yen the year before, its worst showing since the global financial crisis a decade ago. In this fiscal year it’s expected to drop to 170 billion yen, due to restructuri

[EVDL] EVLN: Feather-lite trailer targets EV market
https://www.themanual.com/auto/the-secret-to-this-featherweight-298-pound-teardrop-trailer-is-chicken-feathers/ The Secret to this Featherweight 298-Pound Teardrop Trailer Is Chicken Feathers 2019-06-04 [images https://icdn2.themanual.com/image/themanual/earth-traveler-teardrop-trailers-1-800x800.jpg earthtravelerteardroptrailers.com Teardrop Trailers https://icdn3.themanual.com/image/themanual/earth-traveler-teardrop-trailers-3-800x800.jpg https://icdn3.themanual.com/image/themanual/earth-traveler-teardrop-trailers-2.jpg ] For decades, teardrop trailers have served as the perfect base camp for roadtrippers looking to criss-cross the country with as little gear as possible in tow. However, even the swankiest teardrop trailers tend to be cramped and still too heavy to be towed by a compact car or electric vehicle. Earth Traveler targets both problems by starting with an expandable, organic-inspired design and a unique construction base of actual chicken feathers. Earth Traveler’s entry-level T300 brings a whole new meaning to the word “featherweight.” The teardrop trailer’s one-piece construction is built using fiberglass and resin-reinforced feathers to bring the dry weight down to less than 300 pounds. That’s light enough to be towed by most any electric car — and even some motorcycles — on the market. The company’s flagship T250LX ups the ante with a 100% carbon fiber construction that’s ultra-durable and weighs just 216 pounds with the axle. The handcrafted designs were inspired by biomimicry with a shape that’s both organic and aerodynamic. The compact footprint of both models measures just 5 feet by 5 feet by 11 feet to minimize drag while en route to your next destination. Once you’re ready to pitch camp for the night, the pop-out, gull-wing roof and side walls expand the sleeping quarters to a roomier 11 feet by 7 feet by 11 feet. Mosquito mesh all around helps keep out biting things. By day, oversized windows ensure the cabin is awash in light, while after dark, five interior LED lights ensure you’ll always be able to see what you’re doing. Standard equipment for both models is intentionally sparse to allow customers to customize their Earth Traveler to their specifications. Front pop-up and side tents plus an available UV awning help make each model more livable and provide bonus outdoor space to create a separate “living room.” Each model can also be outfitted with a full-featured electrical system including additional LED lighting, plus flexible solar panels and a backup battery. An optional dedicated kitchen station and off-roading kit are in the works for real off-grid living. Earth Traveler’s T300 bases at USD $10,000, while the flagship T250LX teardrop trailer starts around $31,000. All are built to order with an expected lead time of five to seven months. At least that means you can start planning your winter camping and roadtripping [ https://www.themanual.com/outdoors/winter-camping-tips/ ] now. [EVDL] EVLN: Apple titan EV floor-pack, wide-opening opposing-end hinged doors
https://appleinsider.com/articles/19/06/04/apple-car-could-have-battery-filled-floor-and-reinforced-wide-opening-doors Apple Car could have battery-filled floor and reinforced wide-opening doors June 04, 2019 Malcolm Owen [images https://photos5.appleinsider.com/gallery/31397-52469-31295-52136-000-3x2-Apple-suspension-patent-l-l.jpg A testbed for a self-driving vehicle system as part of Apple's 'Project Titan' https://photos5.appleinsider.com/gallery/31397-52463-apple-patents-car-design1-l.jpg Apple's door patent showing where beams offering structural integrity would be placed. https://photos5.appleinsider.com/gallery/31397-52464-apple-patents-car-design2-l.jpg A cross-section of Apple's car floor sandwich, showing the external side sections and the upper plate sandwich. ] Apple is continuing to come up with new designs for essential elements of a car, potentially as part of its "Project Titan" vehicular efforts, with ideas surrounding how to improve the floor assemblies and doors that make up a considerable portion of a vehicle's body to be stronger and to accommodate more batteries. The way a car is constructed can define not only the appearance of the vehicle, but also how it performs and acts for drivers and passengers. While technology has enabled for the design of doors and other parts to become lighter and to move in alternative ways, such as being able to have "gull wing" and sliding doors alongside standard hinged versions, there is almost always room for improvement. Based on a pair of patents granted to Apple by the US Patent and Trademark Office on Tuesday, Apple certainly believes it can make doors and floors better. In the patent titled "Passenger vehicle and door structure," Apple envisions doors for a vehicle that open outward with hinges on opposite ends of the vehicle. Rather than having a vertical door pillar that stretches from the floor to the roof, Apple's system instead creates a large opening without an interfering section of the body, as well as wider views through the window. Under Apple's argument for the patent, it claims the doors in vehicles are usually made to transfer the weight of loads to static body structures, like a door pillar. In cases where manufacturers form a movable door pillar as part of the door's design, this can transfer the load of the door to the roof and floor of the vehicle, effectively accomplishing the same job but at the same time maintaining the need for a door pillar. In Apple's suggestion for a door design, it proposes the use of doors hinged on opposing ends, but without the need for a pillar, nor a quazi-pillar built into the door. Instead, Apple suggests the door's structure can be strengthened with diagonal sections that extend from the top of the door closest to the hinge side, down to the floor where the two doors meet. When both doors are closed, the doors are coupled together, and a tension is extended between the two doors. By being connected together, as well as to latch mechanisms in the floor, the doors provide enough rigidity to override the need for a vertical door pillar, without sacrificing the view. Various variations of the patent suggest ways the structural beams can come together, including how sections can overlap each other and the floor structure, multiple structures within a door, and multiple latching mechanisms that couple depending on if one or both doors are closed. The second patent, "Vehicle floor and assemblies thereof" is a more straightforward patent, describing how a floor of a vehicle can be designed to provide as much structural integrity from outward impacts and from torsion generated by normal driving. This is accomplished at the same time as creating as much space as possible between upper and lower floor assemblies for storing elements, such as batteries in an electric vehicle, but without wasting too much vertical space. Apple's solution requires the use of a lower plate, an upper plate, outboard structures attached to the two plates and a vertical core that is also adhered to the two plates. The two plates can be made from multiple separate plates that are stacked and edge-welded together, with varying thicknesses depending on where strength in the structure is required. The design could also include energy-absorbing and force-spreading regions, which can be used to mitigate damage caused through accidents, with each having differing compressive strengths. The balance is to have enough strength to prevent the compression of sensitive components like banks of batteries, which could be dangerous if pierced. The patent also covers the manufacturing process for the floor, which includes the laying of adhesives, alignment of the core and outboard structures, heating and pressurizing, cooling, flatness correction, and upper floor assembly. Apple files numerous patents with the USPTO on a weekly basis. The publication of patents may not necessarily be a guarantee that the conce

(KBTX) - The Brazos County Sheriff's Office is reporting an increasing number of battery thefts over the past several months. Dep. Stephen Garon says thieves are snagging the batteries from vehicles, oil well sites, heavy machinery, and electric driveway gates. "They're taking these batteries and selling them for $5," said Garon on First News at Four. "So it's really just inconvenient for the victim, because then it costs them $50-100, and it's something they have to have." Garon says the number one way to protect your vehicle battery is to lock your car doors. Usually, the thieves are not jimmying the hood open, they're simply opening the car door to press the button to pop the hood. As for electric driveway gate batteries, Garon suggests locking the battery up or placing a camera at the gate. Furthermore, BCSO is asking everyone to keep a lookout for suspicious vehicles exhibiting the following behaviors: · Stopping in driveways for no apparent purpose · Stopping adjacent to other vehicles that might appear to be disabled · Working on heavy equipment found alongside roadways, or construction sites, at odd times of the day · Being in an area where they look out of place If you have any information that could help the Sheriff’s Office with these investigations, please call the Sheriff’s Office at 979-361-4900, or Crime Stoppers at 979-775-TIPS (8477). If you witness an incident that you believe is suspicious, call Brazos County 9-1-1 at 979-361-3888 and a deputy will respond. "It is important to remember this is a concept vehicle for Victoria Police." Victoria Police ] Victoria's hoons are on notice as police introduce their newest addition to their fleet, an electric car that can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in less than three seconds. The all-electric Tesla Model X started being used on Monday for highway patrol duties, in a first for an Australian police organisation. Victoria Police [ https://www.afr.com/link/follow-20180501-p51rgz ] is one of the first jurisdictions in the world to put an all-electric vehicle into its operational fleet. The five-door, five-seat SUV will be trialled across various regions and be constantly assessed while in operation, to test its suitability for road policing duties. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said electric cars could well be the future of road policing. "This vehicle is unlike any other Victoria Police has ever had in its fleet," he said on Monday. "It is important to remember this is a concept vehicle for Victoria Police and we acknowledge that it will produce a number of unique circumstances and will continue to evolve as police software is integrated. "Vehicles are obviously critical to the work we do as they represent the mobile office for many of our frontline police. Projects such as these mean that when the switch does inevitably happen, our job of keeping Victorians safe will not be compromised." Mr Leane said there's also a great environmental benefit to electric vehicles, considering state highway patrol vehicles travel thousands of kilometres on the road every year year. According to some media reports, the upcoming micro-SUV from Tata might come with the same EV powertrain from the upcoming Altroz EV and it might offer good performance with a range of around 230 km. The EV model of H2X aka Hornbill is likely to come with fast charging options along with connected car features as customers will be able to see the range and control various functions like AC, power windows and lights from the smartphone application. Like most of the modern cars, it might offer internet connectivity also. The design theme of the H2X production model will be similar to the concept version as the muscular theme will make it more popular among customers. The front will get projector headlamps setup in which LED DRL on top and headlamps will be positioned below in bumper. The fog lamps will be placed at the bottom. The Hornbill might come with 16 inch alloy wheels with tallboy design. Tata Motors is expected to offer dual-tone colour options as it is more popular among customers. The interior design theme will take inspirations from Nexon and Harrier. The touch screen infotainment system will be placed on top of the dashboard and it will get connectivity options like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The instrument cluster is similar to Harrier as most of the information will be displayed on the digital screen while speedometer will be analogue. It will likely be badged as Hornbill and launch is expected in early 2020 after its debut at Auto Expo. Re: [EVDL] ?over-heating?: Costco/Interstate GC2 Golf Battery terminals
brucedp5 via EV wrote: Why would Roger consider getting his PbSO4 wet-cells from: Costco, Interstate, or GC2's with small 75Amp golf cart terminals? If for his home solar or his e-tractor http://electrictractor.blogspot.com/ small lead battery terminals for low power use should be OK. I agree. His E-tractor isn't likely to pull high currents. Golf cart terminals are designed to routinely handle 75 amps for extended periods. That should be enough. If for Roger's 96V EV conversion http://www.evalbum.com/1313 using a Curtis 1221 controller, perhaps the terminals could get hot, but that controller only draws 400 battery Amps (someone verify that). A Curtis 1221 will only pull that 400 amps under special circumstances, and only for a very short time. The current rating is motor amps; not battery amps. Battery amps are (almost) always less. The only time it would ever reach 400 battery amps is with a) a stone-cold controller, b) at full throttle, and c) at exactly the right motor RPM so its back EMF is the same as the pack voltage at that 400 amps. This condition is only likely for a matter of seconds. The 75-amp golf cart terminals should easily be able to handle that. I'll assume Roger's EV cables that are set up for L posts are large and robust. So getting enough metal to metal contact to keep from melting posts is Roger's concern. Yes. It's not that a good golf cart terminal can't handle the current. It's that a *BAD* golf cart terminal cannot (dirty, loose, corroded, assembled wrong, etc.) -- In software development, there are two kinds of error: Conceptual errors, implementation errors, and off-by-one errors. https://www.collisionrepairmag.com/news/21893-salt-spring-island-is-in-need-of-electric-vehicle-repairers Salt Spring Island is in need of electric vehicle repairers collision repair May 31, 2019 Elizabeth Sargeant [image https://www.collisionrepairmag.com/images/34851742134_66b6b7b0e1_b.jpg ] Toronto, Ontario - May 31, 2019 -- Sitting between Vancouver Island and British Columbia's mainland, Salt Spring Island is home to about 10,000 people and the highest density of electric vehicles in Canada. With one EV for every 100 Salt Springers, the island is home to four times as many EVs as PEI, despite being home to a 10th of its population. The even more mysterious bit about this EV dense population is that the repair shops seem to have no experience dealing with them. “We’ve never dealt with them,” said Richard Murakami, owner of Murakas Collision. “The only time I’ve ever dealt with an electric car is to get a dent out of the door”. Murakami is approaching his 80th birthday and has been in the collision repair industry in Salt Spring “forever.” And despite the several collision repair shops found online claiming to be located in Salt Spring, Murakami says there’s only two operating, and both shops are unfamiliar with the mechanics of an EV. “Most people with electric cars here take them to Victoria or Duncan to get them fixed. That’s mostly where they get them from,” said Murakami. Despite EV certifications allowing shops to draw in business from places like Salt Spring, not every auto repairer feels the potential benefits outweigh the costs. According to one Duncan repairer, Josh Macadam, owner of Aurora Auto, his own investment in EV repair training has yet to pay off. “It’s a very big endeavour for a private shop to take on those kinds of jobs because of the expense of the equipment they are required to use,” said Macadam. “You’re looking at tens of thousands of dollars just for diagnostic equipment.” A standard trip from Salt Spring to Victoria is 25 minutes by Ferry, but a full hour and a half by car. The options are limited, but EV drivers still persist. “Well, I don’t blame them,” said Murakami. “People will do anything for their car. And an electric car? Wooo you just plug it in and away you go." Vauxhall has confirmed the price, specs, and range for the Corsa-e electric car ahead of its launch. The British car manufacturer has also made this car available to reserve from today for just £500. As an added bonus in the UK, the first 500 customers to place a reservation will receive a free home charging kit when they take delivery of their Corsa-e. The new electric Corsa is based on Vauxhall’s advanced, CMP Multi-Energy Platform and will hope to be as popular the petrol version of the vehicle. Corsa has sold over two million units since it first went on sale in the UK, with over 13.5 million sold in Europe. Powering the car is a 50kWh battery pack and linked to an all-electric motor which produces 136PS. This allows the car to sprint from 0-62mph in around 8.1 seconds This battery pack also allows the vehicle to travel 205-miles of range on the WLTP cycle. When attached to a rapid charger the vehicle can be recharged to 80 per cent in just 30 minutes. Proving for the car has also been revealed with the car costing from £26,490, including the Government’s £3,500 Plug-in Car Grant. Just two trims will be available for the car both of which will come as standard with a 7-inch touch screen, 11kWh onboard charger, satellite navigation, LED headlights, alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, and DAB radio. There is a battery warranty for the car which guarantees that at least 70 per cent of its capacity is maintained for 100,000 miles, or eight years. Full specifications and range pricing will be available when Corsa-e receives its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, ahead of series production starting in January next year. https://electrek.co/2019/06/02/bmw-c-evolution-electric-scooter-roof/ BMW C Evolution electric scooter could be getting a roof and passenger cell Jun. 2nd 2019 Micah Toll [images https://electrek.co/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2019/06/c1.jpg BMW’s turn of the millennium take on a covered scooter, the C1 https://electrek.co/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2019/06/053119-bmw-c-evolution-c1-roll-cage-fig-2-633x388.png BMW C evolution scooter roll cage https://i1.wp.com/electrek.co/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/09/bmw-c-evolution-header.jpg BMW C evolution scooter ] BMW’s C Evolution electric scooter is one of the largest, fastest and longest range electric scooters on the market. And now it seems that the scooter might be getting a safety bump in the form of a covered passenger cell. At least that’s how it appears in a German BMW patent for the C Evolution electric scooter. The patent shows a BMW C Evolution paired with a passenger cell featuring a roof, backrest and even a seatbelt. BMW C Evolution could be getting a roll cage of sorts The passenger cell is modular in design, meaning it could likely be offered as an option to be swapped onto the current scooter model. If BMW actually explores a semi-enclosed electric scooter further, that is. The design basically creates a roll cage that is built into the electric scooter. A full seat and harness keep the rider strapped in. During a slide, the rider would be protected from the road and potentially from impacting other objects – at least depending on the speed. The BMW C Evolution is a powerful maxiscooter, featuring a 35 kW (48 hp) motor that outputs 72 Nm (53 lb-ft) of torque. It can reach a top speed of 129 km/h (80 mph). It features a BMW i-series battery with 12.7 kWh of capacity which provides 159 km (99 miles) of range. Those specs put it in a similar performance class as a Zero FXS electric motorcycle, though with a bit more range. BMW has experimented with similar roofed scooters before. Nearly 20 years ago BMW offered the C1, a funny little covered scooter model. BMW’s turn of the millennium take on a covered scooter, the C1 Will Germany actually build and market the new BMW C Evolution passenger cell? Maybe, maybe not. Covered scooters haven’t had a huge market in the past, but perhaps the electric drive combined with the added safety will be enough to woo riders this time. Electrek’s Take Well, it’s interesting to say the least. BMW is really branching out into some interesting scooter territory lately. You can’t deny the safety aspect of it. If you were to slide on a normal scooter, you’d be in for a bad time. But with the passenger cell on the C Evolution, you could be strapped in and sliding sideways, completely protected from impacting other objects. Sliding along the pavement in a roll cage is something I actually have experience in. During engineering school I used to do unsanctioned DIY soap box car racing. All of our cars were basically welded out of bike parts and reclaimed steel from dumpster diving. I was one of the few to build in a roll cage. My car got rolled in a collision and I skidded on my side for about 50 feet of pavement. Between the roll cage and the 4-point harness (the only non-DIY part of the car), I escaped with only a scratch on my wrist from it hitting the pavement. These roll cages or passenger cells really do keep you nicely cocooned and prevent you from being dragged across the road like cheese on a grater. The problem is that while they do add to safety, they are designed to get otherwise non-riders onto scooters. And part of the danger of scooters is new riders who aren’t accustomed to them or aren’t confident enough to ride them. By lowering the bar too much, you may give people too much undeserved confidence and allow them to get themselves into sticky situations. And as good as a passenger cell is at keeping you in the scooter during a slide, you can still get injured in a high speed crash with a car or other solid object. You don’t want to get T-boned in this thing any more than on a regular scooter. So while I like the safety addition, I think it is important to remember what it can do and what it can’t. [EVDL] Antwerp.be SuperEVSE &Tesla-S EV fire
(EVfire) https://electrek.co/2019/06/01/tesla-fire-supercharger/ Tesla vehicle caught on fire while plugged in at Supercharger station Jun. 1st 2019 Fred Lambert [image https://i0.wp.com/electrek.co/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2019/06/Tesla-Supercharger-fire-hero.jpg https://electrek.co/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2019/06/TEsla-fire-supercharger-2.jpeg ] A Tesla Model S has caught on fire and completely burned down while plugged in at Tesla’s Supercharger station in Antwerp, Belgium. The local news is reporting that the Model S caught on fire a little while after starting to charge (translated from Dutch): “The driver of the car had parked it at a so-called ‘Supercharger’, a fast charging station, at the Novotel at Luithagen-Haven. When he returned a little later, his Tesla and the supercharger were lit up. Possibly there was a technical problem before charging.” The fire brigade used an interesting technique to extinguish the fire and make sure it doesn’t reignite, which has been an issue with electric car fires. Antwerp’s fire department submerged the car into a pool of water: “Moments later, the fire was extinguished by the fire department by immersing the car in a container with water. To ensure that the fire does not flare up again, the Tesla, or what remains of it, remained in the water for the rest of the night.” Here are some pictures of the aftermath (by Marc De Roeck via HLN): TEsla fire supercharger TEsla fire supercharger 2 TEsla fire supercharger 3 We contated Tesla about the situation and we will update if we get an answer. Tesla fires at Supercharger stations have been quite rare, but it’s not the first example. Back in 2016, a Tesla Model S caught fire and burned down while charging at a Supercharger station in Norway. At the time, the automaker said that the cause of the fire was a short-circuit in the car and though the automaker doesn’t know why the short-circuit happened, it nonetheless pushed a software update to its fleet to “provide extra security during charging”. More recently, Tesla updated its battery management software after several Tesla Model S vehicles have caught on fire seemingly on their own without any accident. Electrek’s Take It seems like there have been many Tesla fires lately and they seem to all be Model S vehicles. We know of at least 4 in the past 2 months. To be fair, thousand more gas-powered cars have caught on fire during those two months. What’s more worrying about the Tesla fires is that we don’t know much about the cause of the fires. If the fire started after connecting to the Supercharger, it’s important to understand what happened. Like with the situation in Norway 3 years ago, it might be difficult to pinpoint the cause due to the state of the Model S, which is almost completely burned down. Either way, I think it’s fair to point out that there have been millions of charging sessions on the Supercharger network at this point and only a handful of incidents like this one. In the Swiss canton (similar to a state or county) of St. Gallen, the police department ordered up 13 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric crossovers [ https://www.autoblog.com/2019/02/13/2019-hyundai-kona-electric-drivers-notes-review/ ]. Five of them get the full patrol car treatment shown above with neon orange and white paint, blue police lights, sirens and a police radio. The other eight cars will be left unmodified for non-patrol duties. According to Hyundai, the Kona [ https://www.autoblog.com/hyundai/kona/ ] was selected after testing and after meeting the St. Gallen police department's basic requirements. For an electric vehicle to be considered, it had to be less than 50,000 Swiss francs, which is just under $50,000, have over 100 kW (134 horsepower), a range of more than 400 kilometers (249 miles), and be readily available. The Kona, with its base price of 46,990 francs in Switzerland, and a WLTP range of 449 km (258 miles for U.S. models) met that criteria and won over the department. And because we're sure someone will say something otherwise, the Tesla Model 3 also meets the basic criteria. The base single motor model starts at 47,200 francs, a little more than the Kona, and it has a listed range of 415 kilometers versus the Kona's 449 kilometer-range. The cheapest dual-motor model has much more power and range, but it also starts at 56,900 francs, which is higher than the department's price ceiling. This Swiss police force's choice to add electric cars to its fleet is also one of a few signs of greener police cars coming. Ford has developed hybrid versions of its Fusion and Explorer police cars called the Ford Police Responder Hybrid and Ford Police Interceptor Utility Hybrid. Both are even rated for pursuit duty in the event a chase breaks out. [EVDL] EVLN: 90% efficient Rolls-Royce e-airplanes ts:300mph
https://www2.greencarreports.com/news/1123371_rolls-royce-guns-for-electric-airplane-speed-record Rolls-Royce guns for electric airplane speed record June 2, 2019 Eric C. Evarts [image https://images.hgmsites.net/med/rolls-royce-accel-electric-speed-record-attempt-airplane_100702720_m.jpg ] When most people think of Rolls-Royce, they think of ultra-luxury cars, not airplanes. But a separate Rolls-Royce, spun off of the automaker in 1971, makes aircraft engines. And that company plans to go electric in tackling the world speed record for electric airplanes. To borrow a famous phrase from the automaker, if "horsepower is sufficient." The company has built an all new airplane called ACCEL—"accelerating electrification of flight"—to tackle the speed record attempt sometime in 2020. The ACCEL project is part of a European Commission effort to clean up emissions from air travel by 2050. The plane, and the record attempt are part of a movement expanding electric-car technologies to the skies, including electrifying helicopters and entire airlines. Long haul flight is likely to take longer for electrification to take over. Looking like a contender in the Reno air races, the ACCEL will use three electric motors that produce a combined 500 horsepower. They drive a low-rpm propeller designed to reduce noise and vibration. Rolls-Royce says the powertrain is 90 percent efficient. The motors and controller are made by YASA and Rolls is working with a startup electric aircraft maker Electroflight for the record attempt. Powering the motor is a 750-volt battery pack with 6,000 cells and liquid cooling designed to withstand constant maximum loads during the record attempt. Rolls-Royce did not cite its kilowatt-hour capacity. Rolls-Royce doesn't just want to beat the speed record for electric flight of 210 mph, set by Siemens in 2017, it aims to shatter it. The company hopes the ACCEL will top 300 mph after it takes off on its record attempt at Gloucestershire airport outside of Cheltenham, England next year. In the meantime, the company will conduct flight trials throughout this year working up to the speed record. And it may end up breaking another record of its own—the 1931 Schneider Trophy, set by a Supermarine S.6B that used a Rolls-Royce "R" engine to go 343 mph. After several Mini electric concepts over the years, BMW finally confirmed the production of an electric Mini to start in 2019. It will be the last electric vehicle from BMW before their 5th generation electric vehicle powertrain. Last year, BMW unveiled the first production design features of the upcoming electric Mini, but we have yet to see the full version of the production vehicle. Now BMW has released a video of a camouflaged Mini Electric production prototype towing a 150-ton Boeing 777 plane: They haven’t released a lot of specs for the Mini Electric, but it is expected to be equipped with a similar powertrain as the BMW i3. Electric motors can produce a lot of torque, which is why electric vehicles can do impressive stunts like this. BMW is actually not the first automaker to think of the stunt to promote an EV. Last year, a Tesla Model X broke the electric towing record by pulling a Qantas Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. BMW plans to unveil the production version of the Mini Electric later this year and quickly start production in England and China. The Australian Clean Energy Electric Vehicle Group (ACE-EV) has made a deal with Adelaide’s Aldom Motor Body Builders. ACE-EV now aims to produce more than 15,000 vehicles by 2025 from the South Australian facility. The deal will help the innovative EV car manufacturer establish an assembly line for its flagship Cargo van. From there, ACE-EV plans on large-scale export to meet the global right-hand drive market. Electric vehicle maker ACE-EV opens new assembly line in Adelaide. Australia not keeping up with rest of world: ACE-EV The initial focus for ACE-EV is light commercial city transport. Managing director Greg McGarvie says the EV manufacturer already has orders for around 100 Cargo delivery vans. The electric vehicle maker will have four models in total, the Cargo, Yewt, Urban and the Sportz However, McGarvie told Energy Matters last month that the Federal Government is the biggest obstacle to EV uptake in Australia. The re-elected Coalition went to the May 18 federal election without a concrete EV strategy. He says huge markets like China are 100 per cent behind EVs. A staggering 680,000 EVs were sold there in 2018, while Australian sales were less than 2,000. Electric vehicle maker: Still a way to go to full manufacture According to ACE-EV, a few things still need to happen before the company reaches production capacity. Full manufacture will require around $130 million, McGarvie says. The Aldom deal will therefore help the company kick off first phase of the assembly line. ACE-EV will initially import carbon-fibre body parts from Taiwan and Germany for assembly here. Ultimately, the EV manufacturer hopes to move from 25 per cent Australian-made content to 50 per cent. The EV maker also plans to establish a global right-hand drive market from its Australian base. It will start production using 3,000 square metres of Aldom’s 121,000 square metre factory. Electric vehicle maker ACE-EV opens new assembly line in Adelaide. Why ACE-EV electric vehicles will take off in Australia Greg McGarvie is convinced Australians will soon be driving ACE-EV models because of their advantages: They charge overnight and future models will be fast-charging. 30 kW battery models have 200-250 km range, 40 kW models have 260-330 km. Optional Graphene Interface Technology gives extra 40 per cent range. The average running cost is $9 per 250 km. Starting price is $40,000 before government charges. No smell, no noise. The only additive is water for the wipers. Meanwhile, households with solar panels can also add a home battery like the Tesla Powerwall 2 or Enphase to charge their car overnight. The engineering behind the all-electric car maker’s cylindrical cells speaks for itself in terms of the performance and range achieved, but in a recent interview with a battery technology researcher, a few things detailed about Tesla’s batteries stood out in particular. Ravindra Kempaiah is a Ph.D. scholar at the University of Illinois Chicago focusing on advanced battery materials for his thesis. In his interview with Tesla owner and host of All Things EV, Sean Mitchell, Kempaiah explained lithium-ion technology in EVs and the primary issues faced in their development. Overall, the biggest challenge is balancing the three main components in battery production: energy density, cost, and cycle life. Increasing one area will significantly impact the other, and the ideal equation is always being sought after. For example, if you increase energy density for higher range and lower cost, the cycle life takes a major hit. If you increase density and life cycle, the battery alone can cost as much as $100k, as described by Kempaiah. “We always want more range. We always want higher cycle life. We want our batteries to last 15-20 years and the car to go 500 miles, but this is a problem every battery scientist has faced for the last 30 years,” Kempaiah commented in the interview. Tesla deals with the same balancing act as other battery-electric car makers; however, there are key factors which seem to have kept the company ahead in the industry. First, Tesla’s choice of cylindrical cells sets it apart from every other electric vehicle on the market. This provides several advantages that drive performance, flexibility, and cost control. Notably, Rivian is also using cylindrical cells, [ https://www.teslarati.com/rivian-ny-auto-show-door-flashlight-2170-battery-blog/ ] although their vehicles are not yet under production. Out of the three types of cells available (cylindrical, prismatic, and pouch cells), cylindrical is the most cost-effective to produce. Namely, the cost per kWh is lower in cylindrical cells versus other types. The metallic jacket around the 18650 and 2170 cylindrical cells used in the Tesla Model S/X and Model 3, respectively, acts as scaffolding and provides structural rigidity to the battery. Additionally, in high powered situations, current draw and distribution of power is over the entirety of the battery pack instead of concentrated in a certain section, according to Kempaiah. Second, Tesla uses a liquid-cooled thermal management system to manage battery temperatures whereas other automakers take a more economical air cooling approach. By adjusting the temperature of the battery pack, Tesla is able to ensure that cells are operating in their most efficient and optimal states, thereby maximizing battery longevity as well as performance. While reducing cost is an important factor in accelerating the growth of the electric vehicle market, Tesla’s investment in thermal management technology provides an upside for owners who may be looking for longevity and long-term affordability of their cars. Third, Tesla has actively sought to limit the amount of cobalt it uses in its batteries and already uses less of the element than other companies in the Model 3 batteries. The scarcity of cobalt and its mining sources have subjected it to socioeconomic situations that are more than problematic in the United States, i.e., child labor and similar abuses are widespread in its sourcing. With this in mind, Tesla has been working on the question, “Is cobalt really needed?” Cobalt is used as a cathode in battery technology, and out of all cathode materials available, it has the highest cost both fiscally and politically. Current consensus on battery technology says that without cobalt, the structural integrity and cycle life in batteries is compromised, as described in the interview. However, some recent scientific literature was cited by Kempaiah that indicated higher nickel content limited the impact of cobalt on batteri

[EVDL] ?over-heating?: Costco/Interstate GC2 Golf Battery terminals
[ref http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/Costco-Golf-Card-Battery-terminals-tp4693788.html Does anyone have experience with the Costco Golf Cart batteries? My concern is the terminals. Previously I have used the L-terminals on golf cart batteries. - Roger Daisley ] ?Why would Roger consider getting his PbSO4 wet-cells from: Costco, Interstate, or GC2's with small 75Amp golf cart terminals? Since Roger did state what they were to be used in, some research gave the answers. If for his home solar or his e-tractor http://electrictractor.blogspot.com/ small lead battery terminals for low power use should be OK. If for Roger's 96V EV conversion http://www.evalbum.com/1313 using a Curtis 1221 controller, perhaps the terminals could get hot, but that controller only draws 400 battery Amps (someone verify that). It looks like the costco golf batteries have the small 75A terminals https://www.costco.com/Interstate-6-Volt-Golf-Cart-Battery.product.100476406.html I'll assume Roger's EV cables that are set up for L posts are large and robust. So getting enough metal to metal contact to keep from melting posts is Roger's concern. I have used nolox as a conductive grease to reduce resistance https://www.google.com/search?q=conductive+grease+reduce+resistance it reduced the amount of heat build up on the battery posts, and I had a 600A controller. https://www.yelp.com/biz/costco-clarkston?osq=costco+warehouse Roger's nearby costco store >From what I've gathered Roger is considering costco as his source of a new 100Ah pack because where he lives Pullman, WA, his battery sources are limited. Here are some links I found of battery sources. https://www.samsclub.com/sams/golf-cart-batteries/3990117.cp ng= no sams club nearby https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/NBP8144 $145 napa auto parts https://www.oreillyauto.com/shop/b/battery-accessories-16452/battery---automotive-16864/battery-12836/aa237490c00e?q=6v+golf+battery&prodAttr_13706=6+Volt $118 pullman store Roger might hit-up golf courses to see where they get their batteries.
