Every Plug-In-Hybrid Vehicle For Sale in the U.S. Today

Most plug-in hybrids offer better range than EVs and greater fuel efficiency
than their gasoline-powered counterparts.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) are the bridge between gas-only hot rods and
fully electric vehicles. Not everyone lives within a reasonable distance from a
fast charger that would otherwise make their potentially long commute with an
EV possible. With a PHEV, the gas engine keeps it going even when the battery
power runs out, and unlike the traditional hybrid, its larger battery can be
plugged in for recharge. In most cases, the PHEV model improves both fuel
economy and acceleration when compared to gas-only vehicles. Here's a
comprehensive list of all the plug-in hybrids available in the United States,
including information on performance numbers, pricing, and battery-only range.

The post about drafting a semi-trailer rig to make range hit home for me.
When I was a young foolish motorcyclist in New England, during the winter,
doing just that made temperatures more tolerable. Later years, pedaling a
velomobile behind a construction crane at 35 mph was a real blast. What better
draft could a human powered vehicle ask for than an eight foot wide, ten foot
tall rolling air dam?
For the EV world, I'm surprised Mr. Musk hasn't come up with EV programmed
platooning. Put a Tesla semi on the road to make money, then link a convoy of
other Tesla vehicles with V2V networking and let the lead monster triple the
range of the conga line.
I'd thought about this in years long past that manufacturers should have put
railway type couplings at a uniform height, with data communications. Get on
the highway, ease up behind a train of ICEs (back then) and clunk into the
coupling. Additional dashboard devices would warn the next in line if a middle
car wanted to pull off on a siding, waking up the driver in time to rejoin to
the lead rigs.

Traveling by air involves showing up at the airport and boarding a plane.
But what if you make a trip from your own driveway? NBC Bay Area’s Joe
Rosato Jr. shows a group of engineers trying to accomplish that.

Amid the cow pastures and wind turbines dotting the hills of rural Contra
Costa County, a group of engineering students from the Netherlands sat at
the vacant end of a country airfield, testing what once might’ve been viewed
as a work of science fiction.

The small carbon fiber craft at the center of attention dangled from a crane
like a perch squirming at the end of a fishing line. A short distance away,
a row of engineers in black t-shirts monitored its motion from behind a
strip of plexiglass at the Byron Airport.

“Our concept is a flying motorcycle,” said James Murdza, leader of the group
of student engineers from Delft University of Technology. “So a person can
crouch inside as if they’re riding a sports bike, and the vehicle lifts them
up in the air.”

The group is testing the craft it calls Silverwing for this weekend’s GoFly
competition, a multi-tiered competition that’s encouraging the development
of a compact, quiet personal flying craft capable of carrying a single
person twenty miles.

“Planes have been the same for 100 years or 120 years,” said Hessel
Tiyseling, an engineering student working on the project. “So I think this
personal flight concept is pushing flight into the 21st century.”

The group’s vehicle, which is called the S1 model, is powered by a pair of
lithium batteries operating twin electric motors with blades like a small
helicopter that is eventually intended to fly horizontally. During the test,
the S1 bobbed and weaved vertically at the end of its tether — which the
group is using because of high winds.

But earlier in the week in a hangar in Hayward, the group ran its first
successful test with the craft hovering ten feet off the ground without a
tether.

“That was really, really exciting,” Murdza said, “because it’s all of our
work for the the past two years on the line, and putting it to the test for
the first time.”

The success of the test energized the group for this weekend’s competition
which runs Thursday through Sunday at Moffett Field in Santa Clara County.
Murdza said the competition is so nail-biting, some of the dozen or so
international groups who traveled to the U.S. for the competition had to
back out after failing to get their crafts up to speed. Murdza was mostly
confident his group’s entry would be ready to go in time.

The Netherlands team has so far won two of the competition’s early rounds
which awarded it a pair of $20,000 awards, enabling the team to take the S1
to the next level. For now, the vehicle is unmanned although Murdza hopes
it could one day carry a person at a speed of about 80 miles an hour.
Members of the Silverwing team from the Netherlands look on as their S1
craft runs through a test in Contra Costa County.

“This could be really useful for getting to very hard to reach places,”
Murdza said. “So for example, if you had a natural disaster it would be a
really easy way to reach that place when there’s no infrastructure.”

The idea of a personal aircraft might satisfy those sci-fi fans still
ruffled by the absence of those long-promised jetpacks. Still, the team said
the likelihood of anyone actually flying around in the contraption is still
a good decade away.

“I don’t think anyone’s crazy enough yet to actually sit in this thing,”
laughed Tiyseling.

The craft does offer a portal into the somewhat distant future, when people
might one day hop into their personal craft to zip to the store for a carton
of almond milk. But even more immediate, the vehicle’s use of an electric
motor speaks volumes to the greater emphasis on electric motors in
transportation.

“I think right now we’re facing so many problems with climate change,” said
Bronte Kolar, a member of the team who is working on the electrical systems.
“It’s important that we start transitioning toward electric modes of
transportation, which is why I think electric air vehicles are so so
important for the future.”

At the moment, the air motorcycle of the future was slowly lifting off the
asphalt, moving like a punch-drunk prize fighter getting out of the way of a
left hook. Behind the plexiglass, the team seemed cautiously triumphant —
congratulating each other over their headsets — ready to run the test again.

“I think this is way better than a jet pack,” Tiyseling observed.

Envision Solar - EV ARC PV-EVSE
]

The holy grail of EV charging?

Electrify America announced today a $2 million investment in Envision Solar
infrastructure. The effort will further increase rural Californians’ access
to sustainable electric vehicle charging.

The move will place 30 solar-powered "EV ARC 2020" charging stations with
two Level 2 EV chargers each and help Electrify America continue to expand
access to public charging options across rural California.

The EV ARC 2020 charging stations include two level 2 chargers capable of
delivering 6 kW. The units have 32 kWh of onsite energy storage and a
4.28-kilowatt sun-tracking solar array. The system allows for true off-grid
EV charging with 100% renewable electricity and can be placed where there is
currently no access to an adequate supply of electricity to support EV
charging.

“Envision Solar’s innovative technology allows us to offer renewable
energy solutions for electric vehicle charging,” said Giovanni Palazzo,
president and chief executive officer of Electrify America. “Along with
supporting California’s broader air quality goals, this investment expands
reliable, low-cost charging solutions to California residents living outside
of major metropolitan areas – further demonstrating that electric vehicles
are for everyone.”

These 30 stations will offer access to sustainable electric vehicle charging
to drivers in rural areas, including the Central, Coachella, and Imperial
Valleys of California.

Electrify America points out that these stations will have minimum impact on
the sites because they don't require any construction to install them. They
simply drop them on the site and turn them on: "because of the custom size
and flexible nature of the EV ARC™ 2020, the stations can be deployed
quickly and without disruptive construction. Deployment takes only minutes,
and the chargers can fit easily inside a standard parking spot, preserving
available parking."

“Electric vehicles accounted for about 8% of car sales in California in
2019 but EV penetration is still less than half a percent in rural areas,”
said Desmond Wheatley, chief executive officer of Envision Solar. “Electrify
America’s deployment of our rapidly deployed, solar-powered EV charging
products will help the state get closer to its goal of 250,000 charging
stations by 2025 while putting fully emissions free driving within reach of
those who need it most. We look forward to continuing to support Electrify
America’s efforts now and in the future.”

In a perfect world, all EV charging would be done from 100% renewable
sources. On-site energy storage is needed for installations like this
because of the peaks and valleys of usage as well as generation and the EV
ARC 2020 looks on paper to be a great solution for a number of use cases.

We'd like to know what you think about these units. Do you see more of these
being used in the future? Or is it better for the long run to just bring
grid electricity to these remote places? Let us know in the comment section
below.

Electrify America Invests $2 Million in Envision Solar Infrastructure,
Further Increasing Rural Californians’ Access to Sustainable Electric
Vehicle Charging

Placement of 30 durable, solar-powered EV ARC™ charging stations with two

access to public charging options across rural California

RESTON, VA (February 27, 2020) – Electrify America is investing $2 million
in solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in rural California
that are not tied to the electrical grid. The investment will expand access
to sustainable EV charging to drivers in rural areas, including the Central,
Coachella, and Imperial Valleys.

Electrify America is sourcing the chargers from Envision Solar (Nasdaq:
EVSI, EVSIW), a San Diego-based sustainable technology company. The EV ARC™
2020 is a transportable, solar-powered electric vehicle-charging
infrastructure product. Each standalone station is equipped with a
4.28-kilowatt (kW) sun-tracking solar array, 32kWh of on-board battery
storage, and two Electrify America Level 2 EV chargers capable of charging
speeds up to 6kW. This combination allows for two customers to charge their
vehicles at the same time using 100 percent renewable electricity –
regardless of weather or time of day.

“Envision Solar’s innovative technology allows us to offer renewable energy

naming an electric vehicle a "Turbo?"

The top trim level for this sports sedan (so far, at least) is the Taycan
Turbo S and including the "T" word, synonymous with increasing performance
in internal-combustion engines, has been controversial from the start. While
its use didn't especially bother this writer, I have a vivid memory of the
2-hour bus ride from its debut at Niagra Falls, Ontario to the airport. As
the southern Canadian scenery flowed past the window, the soundtrack of the
trip was an impassioned monologue – nay, irascible rant – of a journalist
outraged that Porsche had deigned to step outside conventional boundaries
for this sobriquet. Here, Porsche once again explains the term is meant to
describe a performance level and not mechanical equipment.

The next question concerns the sound of the car makes. Not noises heard by
inevitably envious bystanders, but rather those experienced by the lucky few
that might find themselves in the luxo-sporty cabin. You see, while in sport
plus mode, occupants are treated to an enhanced version of the natural
sounds of the drivetrain. As our hosts explain, though it is still piped in,
it has a note of authenticity.

The third question is a bit of a fun one for laughs, but the fourth is a
solid heads up looking for something sporty and electric but in a crossover
sort of shape. Answering what comes next for Porsche EV-wise, we're told the
Macan.

We're looking forward to the next video in this series, when hopefully we'll
see some more challenging questions (and their answers). In the meantime,
check out the video above. There is a handy timestamp guide for each
question from the video description which you can find below.

Santa Barbara County Purchases Chevrolet Bolt EVs Amid Criticism

Staff in Southern California’s Santa Barbara County will have a fleet of 56
new Chevrolet Bolt EVs at their disposal in the coming months. The new EVs
are expected to hit the road by this summer, replacing 56
internal-combustion-powered sedans which have reached the end of their
service life at 100,000 miles.

It’s estimated that the switch from gas-powered vehicles to new Chevrolet
Bolts will reduce local CO2 emissions by as much as 200 metric tons
annually. What’s more, if all 240 light-duty sedans currently in service go
electric, it’s estimated that CO2 emissions will be reduced by as much as
857 metric tons.

Approval is now sought to purchase the new fleet of Chevrolet Bolt EVs from
Rio Vista Chevrolet, following the dealer’s low-bid submission to supply the
county’s new vehicles.

In order to support the new Chevrolet Bolt EVs, the Santa Barbara County
Board of Supervisors also voted to acquire and install a range of charging
units this week, with 68 new level-two vehicle chargers, three DC quick
chargers, as well as the software and various related services to run them.

The Board voted four to zero to approve the proposal, with one abstaining.

Some critics called the move “greenwashing,” as the electricity used to
charge the vehicles won’t come from environmentally friendly sources.

Andy Caldwell from the Coalition of Labor also critiqued the project, which
was given the go-ahead amid a road maintenance deficit and pension crisis.
Caldwell labeled the approval as “virtue signaling.”

“I don’t know anybody who turns in their cars at 100,000 miles,” Caldwell
said.

Meanwhile, PowerFlex Systems was tapped to provide the new EV charge units
in exchange for low-carbon fuel credits, which are estimated at a value of
$500,000. County vehicles will have priority at the new charging stations,
but county employees and the general public will also have access.

Mercedes-Benz has redesigned GLA, with the new generation to arrive at
dealers this summer as a 2021 model.

Also arriving in 2020 will be a battery-electric version of the compact
crossover SUV, which has been labeled an EQA in line with Mercedes' naming
strategy for EVs.

The EQA isn't confirmed for sale in the United States just yet and there's a
chance we may not see it. The reason is that Mercedes is also planning an
electric version of the slightly bigger GLB to be called the EQB, which is a
better bet for our market.

Prototypes for the EQA have already been spotted. They reveal that the
vehicle will closely resemble the regular GLA but will sport some clear EV
identifiers like a sealed-off grille for improved aero efficiency, and an
absence of exhaust tips.

As for the powertrain, expect an electric motor at each axle and around 60
kilowatt-hours of battery capacity for about 200 miles of range initially.
More powertrain options could be added down the line. Trademark filings made
by Mercedes with the United States Patent and Trademark Office hint at
EQA200, EQA250, EQA320, EQA350 and EQA360 grades.

The EQA was originally going to be based on Mercedes' A-Class hatchback.
Mercedes even previewed an electric hatch in 2017 with the Concept EQA.
However, the shifting consumer trend toward crossovers looks to have
persuaded Mercedes to use the GLA as the basis for the EQA.

Volkswagen is planning an advanced new electric sports car that is earmarked
to act as a figurehead for a limited range of performance-based ID R road
cars and is set to go into production by the middle of the decade.

The new headlining Volkswagen model has been conceived as both a coupé and
roadster, according to highly placed Volkswagen sources, and will be based
on the German car maker’s skateboard-style MEB platform – the same
integrated structure that also underpins the ID 3 hatchback. It has been
suggested that the ID R could compete against the second-generation Tesla
Roadster, if an internal ID sub-brand strategy paper calling for the
proposed model to be assembled at the company’s Karmann offshoot comes to
fruition.

The MEB platform offers the versatility to house both front- and
rear-mounted electric motors and is described as the perfect starting point
for the new sports car, giving Volkswagen engineers the scope to develop it
with the choice of up to three different layouts with either front-, rear-
or four-wheel drive.

In range-topping form, the new two-seater or 2+2 would benefit from a
twin-motor set-up similar to that adopted by the soon to be unveiled ID 4
SUV, not only providing the Volkswagen Group with an electric ID R
performance flagship but also potentially forming the basis of a proposed
electrically powered successor to the combustion-engined Audi TT.

As Autocar reported last year, sister brand Porsche is developing an
all-electric Boxster. While that model is thought to be based on either the
Taycan’s PPE platform or an adapted version of the existing combustion
engine platform, it’s possible the Stuttgart brand could make use of the MEB
platform to create a sibling to the ID sports car.

A series of design study models already exists for the car at Volkswagen’s
headquarters in Wolfsburg. It has been earmarked to pioneer the use of what
the company’s motorsport director, Sven Smeets, describes as a “new
performance-based battery” being developed in-house at the German car maker
for future ID R road cars.

The new battery incorporates patented cell technology know-how from
Volkswagen’s ID R prototype race car, which has established a series of
performance records in recent years.

“We are beginning to work on the first batteries for the performance road
cars, using the dedicated team from the ID R, so there will be a direct link
between them,” said Smeets. “The batteries start in the same area. At the
moment we’re finalising the performance parameters of the batteries.”

While shrouded in secrecy, Volkswagen’s performance road car battery is said
to use a different chemical process to that employed by the ID 3. It is also
said to adopt a new cell-to-pack architecture for greater efficiency and
packaging benefits.

Speaking about the possibilities open to the German car maker in the
development of performance batteries for road cars, Jost Capito, head of
Volkswagen’s R performance car division, said: “We have different cells and
ways of building and all the technical learnings from motorsport. There are
different demands on a performance car than a road car, and we’re looking at
all aspects to see what we can do with the technology. We’ve seen how it
works in the ID R and now we want to see how it looks in a road car.”

The news of Volkswagen’s plans comes swiftly after the unveiling of the
four-wheel-drive electric Golf eR1.

Although not directly pointing to any future production model, the eR1 is,
in Volkswagen’s own words, “an ambassador for future performance cars for
Volkswagen’s R division”.

A range of ID R performance variants would sit above the ID GTX range in the
same way the combustion-engined R models sit above the GTI today. Autocar
first confirmed earlier this year that the GTX branding would initially be
used on a hot version of the ID 4 SUV, before rolling out across ID models.

There are more than a dozen fully electric, mass-production sedans,
sports cars, and SUVs available to US buyers today.

They vary greatly in terms of cost, range, and power. The priciest model
costs almost $200,000, while the most affordable cars clock in at around
$30,000.

Those with the most range can travel upwards of 300 miles on a charge,
while some offer less than half of that.

Plenty of exciting electric cars are on the horizon, including a go-anywhere
pickup from Rivian, a new crossover from Tesla, and an all-electric Ford
F-150. But there's no need to wait, since more than a dozen fully electric
cars are available to buy in the US right now.

Those cars also span a lot of price ranges. Drivers looking to shed their
gas-fueled guilt and go electric can choose from a plethora of compact
hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs, and sports cars at a variety of costs. The
cheapest electric cars retail for $30,000 to $40,000, while the most
expensive push well into the six figures.

Below is every mass-production, fully electric car you can buy new in the
US, listed from lowest to highest MSRP. The list doesn't include future or
preorder models, or those that have been fully discontinued:

Nissan Leaf: $31,600

Starting at $31,600, the Nissan Leaf is the most affordable all-electric car
on the market. The base model offers a 40-kWh battery with 149 miles of
range, as estimated by the EPA.

Upper trim levels include the Nissan Leaf S Plus with a bigger 62-kWh
battery that offers 226 miles of range. That one goes for $38,200, and the
top-of-the-line SL Plus pushes $44,000.

Volkswagen e-Golf: $31,895

For $31,895, you can buy a Volkswagen e-Golf with fast-charging capability
and an EPA-estimated 125-mile range. Or, you can shell out roughly $39,000
for the upper SEL Premium trim, which sports the same internals but has
upgrades like a larger touchscreen and leatherette seats instead of cloth.

Hyundai Ioniq Electric: $33,045

The Hyundai Ioniq Electric starts at $33,045 and offers an EPA-estimated
range of 170 miles. Its top Limited trim starts at just under $39,000 and
offers extra driver-assistance tech, chrome trim, and upgraded infotainment
and audio.

Fiat 500e: $33,460

With its EPA-estimated 84 miles of range, the Fiat 500e is more suited for
city driving than any longer road trips. The 500e's 83-kWh electric motor
makes a rated 111 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque, according to
Fiat. It starts at $33,460, and is only available in California and Oregon.

Chevrolet Bolt: $36,620

While a $36,620 outlay gets you a base Chevrolet Bolt, nearly $42,000 buys
the Bolt Premier trim, which has fancy features like an optional Bose stereo
system and a standard heated steering wheel.

The Bolt boasts a rated 200 horsepower, 266 pound-feet of torque, and an
EPA-estimated range of 259 miles, according to Chevrolet.

Hyundai Kona Electric: $37,190

The Hyundai Kona Electric starts at roughly $37,000. There

]

Some crazy challenges take hold of you and won’t let go, and despite the
risks, you feel compelled to take a chance.

A few weeks ago, I decided to drive my all-electric Chevy Bolt from Austin
to Corpus Christi, where I needed to visit an archive for my next book. I
knew I could top off the battery with a quick charge in San Antonio, but
then came the big problem: there are no compatible charging stations between
the Alamo City and the coast.

The distance is only 143 miles, and the Bolt has an maximum range of 230
miles, but that’s city driving under perfect conditions. When I consulted
the official Chevrolet app, it calculated that at 75 mph, my battery would
be -1 percent on arrival. In other words, I wouldn’t make it.

I rolled the dice anyway.

Under normal circumstances, I would have rented a car for a road trip, which
is what I told people when I bought my EV. But I’d just attended “Fully
Charged LIVE,” an electric vehicle extravaganza at the Circuit of the
Americas racetrack in Austin.

Electrify America, an EV charging network, was hosting the BBC television
show “Fully Charged,” which reports on the electrification of
transportation. For two days, electric vehicle nerds geeked out on the
latest tech, from new electric bikes to the latest charging infrastructure.

The expert speakers and enthusiastic audience were inspiring. I saw
Porsche’s new all-electric Taycan, a four-door, designed to steal market
share from Tesla. I was charmed by a 1968 Porsche 912 that Austin-based
Moment Motors had retrofitted with an electric powertrain.

The game-changers, though, were Rivian’s pick-up and SUV. These are not
esoteric sports cars or hobbyist fantasies; they are the kind of vehicles
Americans want to own and drive every day.

Unlike the futuristic Tesla pick-up, the Rivian is something any good-ol’
boy in Texas would be proud to drive. The grill is suitably aggressive and
futuristic at the same time, and the cargo capacity and interior features
rival the finest Fords and Chevys.

In Africa, I drove a 1976 Range Rover, and I saw that classic designs
reflected in Rivian’s SUV. The interior was wood and fine leather with
plenty of leg room, and an exterior design that will turn heads in River
Oaks and Alamo Heights.

Rivian’s no-compromise vehicles are full-sized, with towing capacities of
11,000 pounds for the pick-up and 7,000 for the SUV. Their size provides
plenty space for batteries capable of delivering 400 miles between charges.

As I walked back to my car, I saw two dozen people lined up to test drive a
Chevy Bolt. As I got into mine, I decided then to drive it to Corpus the
next day.

I reached San Antonio, 90 miles way, and plugged into an Electrify America
DC Fast-charger. Fast chargers use 440 volts of direct current and can get a
drained Bolt battery to 80 percent in two hours. A 220 volt home charger,
using alternating current, takes twice as long.

With my battery topped up after an hour-long lunch, I set out on I-37 at the
70-mph speed limit. Within 30 minutes, it became clear I needed to slow down
if I wanted my battery to last.

I slowed to 65 mph as other cars whizzed by me. But by taking it easy on the
throttle, I had 10 miles to spare when I reached the only [L2 (not DC]
charging station in Corpus, located at the Harley Davidson dealership.

I plugged in, went inside, and found six all-electric Harleys lined up at
the door, the reasons for the charging station. The owner and staff showed
me the LiveWire’s, and as a motorcyclist, I was impressed.

Two days later, I set out for the return trip to San Antonio and turned into
a nor-wester producing a 40 mph headwind. My range plummeted within the
first 45 minutes, and the calculator said I’d need a tow truck to reach the
nearest charging station in San Antonio.

Then I remembered a trick my mother taught me on road trips during the 1970s

Lithium-ion batteries are the Goldilocks of the electronics world. For the
li-ion in your electric car, conditions can either be too hot or too cold,
but li-ions prefer it juuust right.

A new report from the University of Michigan lays out the best ways to keep
your EV's li-ion battery happy and healthy for the longest amount of time
possible. With help from the Responsible Battery Coalition, researchers
compiled these recommendations by analyzing academic reports as well as
vehicle instruction manuals. They came out with nine actionable guidelines,
which Electrek helpfully summarizes here.

The report is a useful tool for EV owners, but it has a higher mission, too.
Maximizing the life of a car's battery helps limit the environmental impact
of these vehicles, since it means fewer cars getting retired and sent
through a yet-to-materialize recycling process. On the other end of the
production cycle, it could hopefully reduce the need for more
resource-intensive li-ions being created in the first place.

Most of the recommendations center around how to keep your car's battery
happy in extreme temperatures, whether frozen or sweltering. Overall, owners
should plug in their cars during these times, which will allow the battery's
cooling or heating systems to run most effectively by using grid power. EV
owners should also avoid letting their cars' batteries run down entirely,
since that has a negative effect on battery life.

Not too hot, not too cold; not too charged, not too dead. Your car's battery
likes it just right.

Not too hot, not too cold; not too charged, not too dead. Your car's battery
likes it just right.

Image: University of michigan

Here's a summary of the findings. Charge on!

Plug in your car when it is extremely hot or cold.

Avoid driving in extremely hot or cold temperatures.

Don't park in the sun when it's very hot outside.

Don't expose your car to extremely low temperatures (think: -22 degrees
Fahrenheit) for "extended periods of time."

Turn off your car before its battery charge reaches zero.

Don't leave a car with a low battery sitting uncharged for an extended
period of time; even if the car isn't on, the battery can degrade on its own
if it's not charged.

Some cars say to minimize the use of "fast chargers."

Volkswagen will launch its e-Golf Pilot Project with the evaluation of six
e-Golf vehicles, followed by the VW ID.3 at a later stage.

Volkswagen has taken its first step in making a real play in the electric
mobility space through the e-Golf Pilot Project which is is a study in South
Africa’s response to electric mobility.

Six e-Golfs will be evaluated by a select group of VW dealers, motoring
and lifestyle media, as well as VW employees, to derive as much
on-the-ground information about living with e-vehicles on a day-to-day
basis.

We can expect that select dealers in Cape Town and Johannesburg will also
make use of the cars to educate customers in electric mobility. Using the
cars for shuttle services to and from dealers, as well as making them
available as courtesy cars for certain customers, will form part of the
evaluations.
Electric vehicles ‘future of our brand’

“With the help of our dealers, we want to get as many South Africans as
possible to drive and experience an electric vehicle as this is the future
of our brand,” Volkswagen Group South Africa sales and marketing manager
Mike Glendinning said.

The e-Golf looks about as normal as any other Golf with slight revisions to
the grille and wheels. So much so that you may not be able to tell the
difference between the e-Golf and a combustion engine-powered version.

However, you will be able to see a marked difference between the e-Golf and
the latest electric hatch from Volkswagen, the ID.3, which will also form
part of the project in Mzansi.

If you’re an avid social media user, you may have noticed a few VW ID.3
models being tested in and around Gauteng a few weeks ago. Keen-eyed
spotters posted a number of images and videos on social platforms and by all
accounts the reception was good.

These cars will form the next phase of the electric mobility project in
South Africa, with a group of these set to be introduced in 2021 for similar
evaluation.

During this pilot phase, no e-Golfs or ID.3’s will be on sale to customers
who may want to purchase them. The only time that Volkswagen plan to sell
these vehicles is from 2022 as the final phase of the e-mobility project.

It’s not the first project of its kind on the continent.

In October 2019, Volkswagen launched a similar, albeit slightly larger
project of this nature, in Rwanda to test the feasibility of electric
mobility in the central African country.

  - The Model S Long Range Plus claims 390 miles of range and the Model X
claims 351 miles of range.
  - These models serve as the base variants, starting at $81,190 and $86,190
for the Model X.

Tesla’s Elon Musk has claimed that his company will soon sell an EV with 400
miles of range, and he’s getting closer than ever. A new Tesla Model S Long
Range Plus variant has a claimed driving range of 390 miles, according to
the Tesla website. There is also a Long Range Plus version of the Model X
SUV, which is rated at 351 miles of range. Neither of these models are
listed on the EPA website, yet, so these new range numbers are Tesla
estimates.

Tesla has not provided any details on how it added the additional range, and
the only change we can see on the Model S is a new set of 19-inch standard
wheels with a so-called Tempest design. We do know that there is some sort
of software tweak involved, as Musk tweeted that the company will roll out a
software update for existing Model S and Model X owners to unlock extra
range. We assume that only Model S and Model X Long Range cars built in the
last few months will be eligible for this update.

The Long Range Plus models now serve as the base configuration for both the
Model S and Model X. They start at $81,190 for the Model S and $86,190 for
the Model X, and they replace the previous base models—called Long
Range—that were EPA-rated at 370 miles for the Model S and 328 miles for the
Model X. In our testing, a Model S Long Range achieved an estimated 222
miles of range in our 75-mph highway test.

A Karachi-based company introduced its own range of electric vehicles on
Friday.

Crown Group has been making auto parts since 1963. It displayed a number of
environmentally friendly vehicles, including motorcycles, auto-rickshaws,
cars and ambulances, which it says are energy efficient.

The starting price for an electric car, a pilot project, is Rs400,000. It’s
a two-door hatchback with a seating capacity of two persons. The prices of
the rickshaws and motorcycles are between Rs200,000 and Rs55,000
respectively.

The company says its vehicles will cost Rs1.25 for each kilometre travelled,
which “makes it the cheapest” option available for transport.

Farhan Hanif, the chairperson of the group, says the two and three wheeler
automobiles can travel 60km to 70km on a full charge. A car fully charged on
a 50-amp battery can travel up to 50kms.

Eight Chinese companies have partnered with the Crown Group in joint
ventures, said Hanif, adding that the company is ready to expand production
as soon as the government implements its electric vehicle policy.

A draft of the policy awaits the government’s approval.

If the government keeps its word on the electric vehicle policy, the custom
duty on imports of auto-parts will only be 1% while the sales tax will not
exceed 5%, said the chairperson.

He emphasised that the advent of electric vehicles will help boost
Pakistan’s economy and introduce new jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities
as specific power stations to charge the vehicles will have to be
established.

Crown Group is a new player in the electric vehicles market and has invested
Rs2 billion to set up its manufacturing plant.
