Re: [EVDL] Adding a FM radio to a Tesla.

2024-04-19 Thread Lawrence Rhodes via EV
All you need is a phone hooked to bluetooth.  Most stations stream free on the
world wide web. Otherwise a simple digital radio has  surprising fidelity and
selectivity. Might have to shop around a bit to satisfy your taste in radio.

Maybe for some people. But I happen to like listening to an actual radio,
without having to subscribe to some streaming service.

Most cheap portable radios also have worse sensitivity, selectivity, and
fidelity than the radios normally put in cars.

In the era of streaming any am or fm radio station, radio reception ability is
almost mute. A simple portable radio hooked to a Bluetooth transmitter is all
you need, if you can't stream. Total cost starts under $20.  Lawrence Rhodes

2023-11-30 Thread Lawrence Rhodes via EV
I just got a quote for two Tesla power walls, about 10kw each. Nickel
batteries. Not LFP. Supposedly are really 13kw with 20 to 80% algorithm built
in. My new Y is also nickel. Theory is more power and similar life as well as
faster charging. 5.85kw solar panels and two batteries for $50k and 17k of tax
write off. All legal with smart panel but in producing from 2.4 to 8kw will
lose PG 1 to 1 payback.. Never have to worry about power outages though. This
includes no roof work. We paid $700 last year up from the pandemic $550. Still
haven't put in a heat pump. Still using space heaters. I could DIY but PG
might notice. Doing it legally will cost use $4k a year vs. $700 and that's
with space heaters and one Leaf. Now two Teslas and heat pump coming...We will
use more in my estimation.  Lawrence Rhodes

100 miles on 1kWh? What are you smoking?

I'm pretty sure even an electric bicycle can't do that.

Al
You would be mistaken. Stella Era did 1,200 miles over two days using a
1,250kwh battery and a 1.25 kw solar panel. That's pretty close. Lawrence

I've been an EV activist for over 20 years. Been driving EVs and powering them
with solar energy since 2002. I helped organize the fight to save the last
remaining EV1s that were ultimately crushed as portrayed in the documentary,
"Who Killed the Electric car?". When we were fighting to save EVs from being
crushed, the UAW didn't help us. When I went to Washington for hearings on EVs,
Rep. Dingell testified against EVs, specifically on behalf of the UAW. For two
decades unions and their members have fought against EVs.
But then Tesla came along.
Against heavy odds, Elon Musk and his excellent team of engineers and workers,
all motivated by the mission to electrify transportation, built the best cars
and SUVs in the world - according to every metric you wish to use. Tesla,
derided for years for not being profitable, were pumping the profits into
building bigger and more efficient factories, "the machine that builds the
machine", and now Tesla has the highest profit per unit - by far - of all
carmakers.
UAW members deserve whatever happens to them. They all drive grossly
inefficient gas vehicles, and a high percentage of them support Trump. The ICE
industry is going to be dead no later than 2035, so everyone making anything
associated with internal combustion will be out of a job. The Labor Dept. says
we need over a million electricians, so maybe some can learn that trade. I hope
the strike lasts a long time, because the fewer ICE vehicles built, the better.

[EVDL] EV Distance Record Smashed

2023-09-16 Thread Lawrence Rhodes via EV
Nothing beats the efficiency of a properly designed solar vehicle that can
collect energy anytime the sun shines. With a 12.5 kwh battery, 5 seats. 1.25
kw solar panel .15 coefficient of drag, 45 mph speed and a weight of 850 pounds
the last interation of the Stella (practical solar vehicle) solar racer of the
Cruiser Class in the World Solar Challenge achieved 1,200 miles on one charge.
That's the record in my opinion. solarteameindhoven.nl not a rolling pingpong

I'm not an expert or engineer, but I suspect that we're about at the stage
where it would be possible to build an EV capable of a few dozen miles of
daily travel, using solely sunlight from its own PV.

It might even be a bit more civilized and comfortable than the solar
challenge racers.  In fact, a few such prototypes have been built.

The question is, could you afford it?  High efficiency PV is *expensive* and
is apt to be for quite a while yet.
We are well beyond dozens of miles and only a millionaire can afford one.The
World Solar Challenge has a number of different classes. The Cruiser Class is
dedicated to practical solar vehicles. In the last race before the pandemic
they had a vehicle that seated 5. Could cruise at 45mph indefinitely and over
two days covered 1,200 miles. The cells were off the shelf Sunpower cells with
special encapsulation. Cost was $5,000.00. The hub motors were $10k each. They
used two. If you dumbed it down and used scooter parts, I bet you could get a
few hundred miles out of a home built with a cost that is affordable. The
materials are here. All one must do is bolt them together. Lawrence Rhodes

2023-07-07 Thread Lawrence Rhodes via EV
From: Ryan FulcherI'm looking forward to being finally proven wrong about the
practicality of
PV on your EV when the Aptera starts being delivered...

For a decade the Eindhoven Solar team has 4 cars win the World Solar
Challenge and an RV for proof of concept that solar vehicles work. However the
Aptera is not properly shaped to place a 1.5kw solar panel anywhere. The trick
is to have have your aerodynamics in side view. The squished tadpole design
gives a large flat surface on top for lots of panels. The Aptera is a great
stand alone EV, however not my idea of a solar design. Solar vehicles must be
engineered from the ground up. Solar panels on the Aptera are an afterthought.
I am not talking about the rolling Ping-Pong tables you may have seen. Actual 5
passenger vehicles with a trunk. We now have the materials to make the
engineering work.  Lawrence Rhodes solarteameindhoven.nl

charge.
I feel like a broken record at this point, as I've said it several times
already, but my predictions are: 1. Tesla will only allow access for other
vehicles on V4 superchargers.  2. The network will become substantially less
reliable for non-Tesla cars.  3. The rollout will be slow, it's  not going to
be overnight all superchargers with just an adapter.
I've already explained the technical reasons I am asserting this.
I've also warned about using Tesla destination chargers, as some are hooked to
1 leg of 480 3-phase wye, which is 277V nominal which most EVs will not
tolerate.   For example, a Leaf will blow it's on-board charger.   Teslas are
rated up to 300VAC.  Most others top out at 264VAC.  There is no good way to
tell before you plug your non-Tesla EV in and there's smoke and you are stuck!

Looks like the CCS consortium still has a great deal of influence of political

My understanding is that the J1772 plug/standard and CSS standards are
the "official" standards for the United States, developed by SAE with
wide-spread industry participation, so I would expect them to be
officially supported by any governmental subsidies, tax incentives, etc.

It's fine for TESLA to market and promote a competing standard, but the
government usually follows the guidance of the national academies, and
large scale industry standards associations as opposed to those provided
by a single company.

So I would expect the SAE and other national standards groups to have
more influence than any single company, as they typically represent a

Thanks for pointing out my error Rush. However, 7.4 kw is pretty standard.
Still a good value. I have both EVs. Doesn't matter to me. I base my choice

There are a couple of reasons I recommend the $230 Tesla EVSE. It is 50 amps.
It is portable. Comes with 14-50 and 120vac. There's a wide array of adapters
for different sockets. I have never had a failure except by my own
incompetence, not tightening a connection enough. So for $300 ish you have a

adapters. (Tesla Tap) Tesla includes a J1772. Not a problem. They swing both
ways. The price is right and there's no reason to permanently install any EVSE.
From my experience Tesla doesn't make crap. I have been using a converted Avcon

   - In the bottom left, tap Directions.
   - In the bottom bar, swipe up.
   - Tap Change engine type.
   - Select your engine type  tap Done.

Choose your engine type

Choose the option you use the most:

   - If you drive a vehicle with an internal combustion engine, choose Gas or
Diesel.
   - If you drive a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid that mostly runs using fuel,
choose Hybrid.
   - If you drive an EV or a plug-in hybrid that mostly runs on electricity,
choose Electric.

[EVDL] 24 kwh Leaf emergency trip to Portland from San Francisco

2022-12-25 Thread Lawrence Rhodes via EV
My Son had his flight to Portland, OR canceled Friday. He made it to Christmas
dinner there around 5PM Today after leaving early Saturday morning.  36 hour
trip. We gifted him the car but his Mother,  who is a car camper, was supposed
to ferry the car up to Portland next week but circumstances forced this newbie
long range hyper miller into action. I had fashioned a sleeping rack in the
back using plywood siding and a plastic milk crate for foot support, which his
Mother uses to sleep. I gave him advice on the two ball system and trying for
5-6 miles per kwh in the instant scale. He has driven the car around San
Francisco,  But never a road trip. He has never used CHADEMO. A car Tesla
thought was worth only $1,000.00 proved it's worth. Newbie driving over 700
miles up the 101 Freeway in cold conditions.  Might this be a world record? I
am proud of my son.. but he did get a free car out of it. I got a Tesla.

Re: [EVDL] EV cold weather range

2022-12-22 Thread Lawrence Rhodes via EV
I have a 2016 Leaf with 8 bars left. Driving slowly I made it 94 miles over
three hills to Modesto. The highest 1,000 feet. Altamonte. This the i580 route
from San Francisco. It was in the 50's in San Francisco and 42° in Modesto when
I got there with 14 miles range left. I average 5 miles per kWh hyper milling.
I do much better in the Summer.

I listen to: Now you know, E for electric, Electric Viking, Best in Tesla and
Sandy Munroe. All easily accessible on YouTube.  Where do you get your
information? Or should I say attitude. EVs will be 50% of car sales by 2025.
70% by 2027. Our dreams are happening faster than anyone would have guessed a
few years ago. People are not stupid. Solar panels and EVs means independence
from big oil. Every day EVs are delayed it is 10 billion in the pockets of big
oil. Just look at the numbers. Not hard to do. Tesla is selling more than the
Accord and Civic and soon will overtake Camry and Corolla.

2022-12-21 Thread Lawrence Rhodes via EV
That's why I think that despite strong (but declining) Tesla sales, Renault,
Stellantis, and VW will eventually clean Tesla's clock in Europe.? They
actually build EVs for normal people - and normal, middle-income Europoeans
are buying them.? And despite what all y'all may think, I'm still convinced
that the future success of EVs is mostly in the EU and China, not here in
the US.

David Roden, EVDL moderator & general lackey
You couldn't be more wrong. Tesla is so far ahead it will be only BYD that can
catch them. GM and Ford maybe Stellates, Honda and Toyota will eventually go
belly up.  Mazda is doomed. Subaru also doomed. Hyundai/Kia maybe. When the 25k
Tesla comes out it will be the knife twist to the gut. Tesla is making more
money selling electric cars than any other car maker making ICE vehicles. Their
profit per car is remarkable. https://youtu.be/arYz-aK6lM8

Good luck with that.  Most of our "investor owned" utilities don't have a
good track record of even keeping up with current maintenance, much less
actually planning for the future.  Unless they can see a return from it this
quarter, they won't pay for it.  If you want to see where that kind of short-
sightedness leads, have a look at Puerto Rico's grid.

For the most part, at least here in California, the investor owned utilities
largely are not allowed to plan (or more accurately to spend) for the future.
In really short summary, the concept is that rate payers today should not have
to pay for future projects.  That is an insanely simple explanation of a very
complex process, but it's a fairly accurate summary.

As I understand it, most other states are at least similar.

I think the truth is nobody here can make an EV as reliable or as cheaply than
the lowly Nissan Leaf. 107 Miles range and under 14k in 2016 as the Chevy Bolt
came out. I got the last one on the lot and didn't care weather it had the
color I wanted. It had cruise control, heated seats and air conditioning. It
also had CHADEMO for fast charging. Also nobody here can make a car as safe and
a Model S. Lets face it. Unless you have a very cute or practical vehicle, that
is yet to be made by the OEMs, there is no reason to convert anything. I do
want a van or pickup. Has anyone here adapted CCS or CHADEMO to their
conversion?  Lawrence Rhodes
