Re: [EVDL] Chevy Bolt Battery recall fix with software?

2023-03-16 Thread Peri Hartman via EV

Thanks !

If you, or anyone, ever has the opportunity to do the same kind of trip
in 35F ambient temperature, that would also be a good data point.

I've read that the Bolt is mediocre, in terms of maintaining range in
cold weather. But real world data is always better than the usual
subjective "analysis."

It was about 250 miles of relatively level freeway (I680 east of San Jose, CA
and US101 south of San Jose, CA) at 65mph using cruise control. The
temperature that day went up to 80F, so I imagine the average for the drive was
in the mid seventies. I set the climate control to automatically keep the cabin
temperature at 71 degrees.

I never got the software recall done on my 2017 Bolt. Instead I just used
hilltop reserve mode. I had the battery replacement done last August.

I don’t know what my range was before I had the replacement because I usually
only drive less than 50 miles. After getting the replacement, I did take it for
a 253 mile drive using 59.3 kWh.

How often do you drive 200 miles that you noticed the range dropped from 260
to 200 miles?

We went through the same thing with our 2019 Bolt. Like you, we ignored
the invite but did set the car to "Hilltop Reserve" as recommendedand
parked it outside (garage was full) which would have been set by the
dealer anyway.
A while later, they said they had the new pack and we brought it in for the
servicing. Two days later, we picked it up. No problems since. New
Pack. New Warranty. What's not to like? Oh and the car did not catch fire.

I think that they probably consider it more important for the cars to look
macho and aggressive, like their ICEVs do. Hate and rage are trendy now,
don't you know. Hence big, heavy wheels and tires, a tall stance, ludicrous
ground clearance, a boxy shape, and mean-looking front end treatments, all
of which fight the air the car's going through.

I have been told no over air updates for Bolts except for the entertainment
center. I had to take mine in to get the 80% patch put in by a tech at the
dealer until it gets a new battery. As I understand it, several of the Bolt
fires were cars at a low state of charge. The problem is really an assembly
issue within the cells. I think the newer Leafs don't have an 80% charge option
anymore.

Thanks Ed, Mike for the informative reply.
I still don’t understand why GM doesn’t display on the screen and users manual
(like my Tesla Y and Nissan Leaf) does to only charge to 80% most of the time
for local trips. Seems like this would help their 100% when hot charging cell
(rare) fires.
I got a letter from Chevy saying that they were going to reduce the range to
80% (presumably over the OnStar air network). A month or so it appeared that I
had less range on long trips but could be a placebo effect…. Anyway I’ll check
the link you recommended on the battery replacement status. Sounds like
they’re replacing the whole battery pack and not just individual cells since
they can’t determine the cell shorting problem without destroying it.
My 21’ Tesla Y has 50K miles and no issues so far (except annoying display over
the air tweaks) contrary to Consumer Reports last month black eye on
reliability. They put the Ford Mach E (mustang) at the top (for reliability)
this time but EPA gave it a low efficiency rating (along with the VW). Not
sure why some EV manufacturers don’t spend more time in the wind tunnel… Stay

Re: [EVDL] Chevy Bolt battery recall

2022-12-06 Thread Mike Chancey via EV
There is a Bolt recall tracker at: https://bolt.areyouscared.dev/ that allows
users to add their VIN and help track overall progress. Of course, VINs not
entered aren't being tracked. GM is not doing the recall in any order that
anyone can comprehend. Some from every year have been completed, but there was
a push in the last few months to finish all the unsold 2022s on dealer lots to
make way for the new 2023s. That push seems to be pretty much completed, so now
they are picking up the earlier ones. BTW, the tracker hasn't been up that
long, and only allows non-completed recalls to be entered, so replacements
completed before 7/20/22 aren't shown. The recall reports at the NHTSA show far
more of the earlier Bolts completed than the tracker does.

My 2020 Bolt became eligible for a battery 11/21/22, but I am in the middle of
a repurchase/trade deal, so I am not getting it replaced at this time.

Re: [EVDL] Chevy Bolt battery recall

2022-12-06 Thread Ed Blackmond via EV
The batteries are being replaced because of a manufacturing defect. From the
public description I believe that upon swelling at full charge, an arc could
occur internal to a battery cell and start a fire. The defect is apparently
rare, but there is no way to determine if a cell has the defect without
destroying it.

GM discovered the manufacturing process that caused the defect and made changes
so newer cells do not contain the defect. However since there is no way to
determine which cells made under the old process are bad, GM decided to replace
all the battery packs made from cells using the old process. This includes your
2020 car.

As for your range reduction, did you really used to drive 260 miles per charge
and now can only drive 220 miles per charge? Driving the car from full charge
until the charge is completely depleted is the only way to determine the range.

If you are noticing that the range estimate displayed on the driver’s
information screen previously presented 260 and now presents 220, this is
probably more of indication of how you have been driving. Did you have to
software update that limits the charge to 80% installed? This will also effect
the range display.

The estimates are calculated using a bunch of ad-hoc heuristics. The best thing
you can say about them is that they are inaccurate (except if it displays 0).

Having said that, the estimate combined with the trend bars is quite useful.
The trend bars indicate how much better/worse you are driving compared to the
estimate. If you always drive in a manner that keeps the trend bar above the
range estimate, you will always beat the estimate. I find this combination to
be a very intuitive and effective interface.

[EVDL] Chevy Bolt battery recall

2022-12-06 Thread Mark Hanson via EV
Hi folks
I bought a new Chevy Bolt August 2020 (now has about 40k miles) and a year ago
got a letter from Shelor Chevy saying they were going to replace the battery,
now just crickets (dealer doesn’t know anything) Does any Bolt folks know if
they just replaced the 2017s and not the newer cars? The range has dropped
from 260 to about 220 in warm weather. I noticed that Chevy is the only one
that doesn’t say to charge to 80% for local trips , probably why they’ve had
some 100% charging fires (clueless owners charging hot to 100% daily).
Have a renewable energy Christmas
