They don't loose money per say but they are in the red till the sell enough vehicles to pay for the new tooling required to make them. I don't know if new ICE models lose money initially, but it's certainly expected that vehicles with new technologies will lose money. The Prius, which became hugely successful, lost money for several years. And no ZEV, including Tesla, is making profit - yet. But I think that your criticism of GM for "whining" about losing money was misplaced. Nowhere in the Bloomberg article was GM complaining. In fact, the only mention of GM's comments about how much money they were losing on the Bolt was that GM had declined to comment on how much they were losing. It's hard to know what they mean by $9K per car. Does that mean $9K for actual manufacturing costs? Does it include R? Does it take into account a declining price for batteries? If R is amortized, over what period? What about economy of scale? It would be nice to see them find a way to claim a profit instead but, still, it's a pretty meaningless number without the qualifications.
