2016-12-06 Thread Mark Abramowitz via EV
I don't know if new ICE models lose money initially, but it's certainly
expected that vehicles with new technologies will lose money. The Prius, which
became hugely successful, lost money for several years. And no ZEV, including
Tesla, is making profit - yet.
But I think that your criticism of GM for "whining" about losing money was
misplaced. Nowhere in the Bloomberg article was GM complaining. In fact, the
only mention of GM's comments about how much money they were losing on the Bolt
was that GM had declined to comment on how much they were losing.

Probably includes the loss of benefit in kind (kickbacks in the US) that GM
receives from the oil companies. ;-D

It's hard to know what they mean by $9K per car. Does that mean $9K for
actual manufacturing costs? Does it include R? Does it take into
account a declining price for batteries? If R is amortized, over what
period? What about economy of scale?

It would be nice to see them find a way to claim a profit instead but,
still, it's a pretty meaningless number without the qualifications.
