You might wanna check out jhbuild ( live.gnome.org/Jhbuild) . Most of
gnome code is hosted in git ( git.gnome.org ). Additionally, check your
distribution list for specific instructions.
Fedora offers yum and debian/ubuntu offer apt to allow one to download
source packages and build them
