You'll have to go into user's #2 mailbox in outlook, right click on the

Hi,
User #1 wants to be able to view User #2's Email.
I've gone into Exchange 2000 and accessed User #2's
account and granted User #1 read rights to User #2's
mail box.

When User #1 open Outlook, then File==Open==
Other User's Folder and I specify User #2, the message
Information store could not be opened

Why did this happen? What am I missing?
TIA,

will be migrating 1000 exchange 5.5 users from various exchange servers to
a exchange 2003 server within a SAN or Cluster, about 90 gig priv (number
arrived by using exmerge). I have been going through microsoft's web site
and did find a white paper on deploying 2000 cluster (should be no
difference with the exchange version, the concept is the same).

Is there anybody that can give me any specs on what they are using in the

Shift+Del does not work. It's like the messages just are not in the
database, though they show up in the client. They can't be opened, moved,

I suspect most mail servers will not reject mail because of that.
You will need to use some sort of relay to accomplish that with 5.5 or as

RE: auto BCC'ing all messages * Exchange 5.5 *

2003-09-03 Thread Paul kondilys
Hey guys,

Question:
Running AD, and exchange 5.5.
Just got a response back from an organization saying that they cannot
receive e-mails from my employees? E-mail is working fine to any external
address I've tried, except this one destination address. Their admin was
nice enough to inform me that their server refuses to relay any e-mail for
connecting SMTP servers which report nonexistent names. My exchange server
reports itself as exchsvr1.domainname.local and the other admin is telling
me this is not a valid DNS name? We recently went to AD, is there something
we missed on our exchange box that needed to be changed, or on DNS for
Active Directory?

Thanks

Paul

That will only catch incoming mail.
Check out journaling, that's probably what you need.

Has anyone had a request to automatically BCC all messages being sent out of
a mailbox also be sent to another user? for example

Joe smith is suspected of wrongdoing. His boss Bob doesn't know for sure.
So Bob requests that all e-mail's Joe sends also be sent to him.

Is this possible?

RE: Backup Software for Exchange 2000

2003-08-10 Thread Paul kondilys
Wow, how are you doing the gig a minute? I have a 160GB backup and it takes
almost 24 hours on Veritas 8.6. It really slows down when it hits the
mailboxes though. Do you have the drive mounted directly to the exchange
server?

Thanks,

A Gig a minute, really? Using Backup exec 8.6? Are you using a remote
agent or is it a local backup ?(backup device connected to your exchange
server).
I have a 35GB backup and verification process which takes approximately
3 hours using BE 8.6 with remote agent.

Subject: High Availability Exchange 2000

Hello All.

Little Background:
Last week, Exchange 5.5 server went ka-poot early in the day and I was
unable to recover the IS. We ended up losing 11 hours of data that was not
on a backup tape. A key member of the management team has had the stance in
the past that email is best-effort. I knew that would fly until the time
that messages and calendar info was lost. I was right! Where there was no
money before has come lots of money to make Exchange high availability.
Amazing what a little data loss can produce...huh? Anyhoo, my task now is
to find information about either SANs, Clustering, Mirroring

Any suggestions or comments is always appreciated by you.

before I get back to one of my employees about what he's doing. Can someone
just verify what I'm saying...
It is not possible to back-up the PRIV.EDB files on Exchange 5.5 unless you
stop the Exchange services right? One of my guys is trying to run a veritas
backup that includes the PRIV.EDB file, and the file is skipped during the
back-up operation. I advised him as to why it does this, and how to
correctly do it. He still swears that it's veritas software screwing up...

Any help would be great,

Hi Mike. Have you set up the client permissions for the mailbox in the
EventConfig folder? I've forgotten to do that on occasion. And I think
I learned the hard way that if this step was missed, you need to uninstall

It is quite possible to do a backup of Exchange 5.5 WITHOUT stopping the
services. You either use NTBackup, or use a 3rd party backup utility with
an Exchange Agent. If you decide to not use either of those 2 methods, you
sure as heck better stop the Exchange services first, otherwise you will be
attempting to back up an open database file as a flat file. Not good!

We are ticking off the option for the Information Store, but have now
modified the job to backup the PRIV.EDB as well. Only reason we're doing
this is because we would like to have the actual PRIV.EDB in a backup media
for access by one of our 3rd party applications that can access the
PRIV.EDB, and extract mailboxes or actual messages.

No, you don't have to stop the services.

Please clarify how you are using veritas; i.e. are you looking on the
relevant drive and ticking priv.edb as a file to backup? If so, this won't
work, you need to tick 'Microsoft Exchange Information Store' in the veritas
directory tree. If this doesn't appear then your exchange agent isn't
installed properly.

EventConfig folder? I've forgotten to do that on occasion. And I
 think
I learned the hard way that if this step was missed, you need
to uninstall the Autoaccept script again, set up the
EventConfig settings, then reinstall the script.

RE: Auto Accept Utility stopped working

2003-07-30 Thread Paul kondilys
It's kinda cool actually. Could use some more work and they do have a new
version coming out soon. The utility is installed onto the server/WS that
has the tape drives mounted. You then mount your Exchange backup tape that
has the IS on it. The tool scans the tape, finds the IS, and tells you what
files are in the IS. You then choose the file you want for example the
PRIV.EDB, and then select where to dump it or copy it. After you're done
copying the PRIV.EDB you use the utility to open the PRIV.EDB and it shows
all the mailboxes and their messages. You can then select which mailbox or
message you want to recover, and then dump it into a .pst or directly into
the user's mailbox. The thing that sucks about the utility is that it would
have been greater if you could just scan the tape, find the IS, then the
PRIV.EDB, and then access it directly from the tape instead of copying it
somewhere. When you're in my type of environment where my IS alone is over
100 GB's it would be easier..

This powertools sounds interesting. When it reads the online backup from the
tape does it need to read the whole thing or can it locate a mailbox,
message etc on the tape and extract it? I tried to find out on the website
but it's not exactly clear as to whether you can do this...

We've had to do a few recovery restores to get back mailboxes in the past
and while this is dead easy, it takes hours to restore the IS from tape.

Right in that case the latest version of PowerTools is able
to read the backup tape and get the priv.edb file directly
from the Online Backup. Note I wrote online backup not
offline backup. I don't know how this works as well use
Netbackup but that is the way it is supposed to work, if not
then call Ontrack support. You are never going to be able to
backup the priv.edb unless you stop the information store
which is not a good idea. If it can't read the tape directly
then you would need to do an online restore to a separate
server where the priv.edb will be located and you can then
use PowerTools to access it. We have evaluated PowerTools and
were not overly impressed it couldn't read priv.edb files if
the database had been under load and created lots of
transaction logs. I believe a newer version currently in beta
and to be released in September may work better.

 That's the one...

We were tryin to back-up the PRIV.EDB for easier access by
the utility. But, we were sure that you can't directly
back-up the PRIV.EDB. Just trying to quell an argument with
one my guys, and needed to make sure that you weren't able to
backup the PRIV.EDB without stopping the services.

 Thanks

That is not possible you can't do a file backup of the
databases files they are locked open unless you stop the IS.
What app are you trying to use to read the edb files is it
 Ontrack's Power Tools?

We are ticking off the option for the Information Store, but
have now modified the job to backup the PRIV.EDB as well.
Only reason we're doing this is because we would like to have
the actual PRIV.EDB in a backup media for access by one of
our 3rd party applications that can access the PRIV.EDB, and
 extract mailboxes or actual messages.

No, you don't have to stop the services.

Please clarify how you are using veritas; i.e. are you
looking on the relevant drive and ticking priv.edb as a file
to backup? If so, this won't work, you need to tick
'Microsoft Exchange Information Store' in the veritas
directory tree. If this doesn't appear then your exchange
 agent isn't installed properly.

It would be nice but don't cross your fingers. The current version of
PowerTools has limited use, if you can successfully restore the Exchange
server from an online backup and it is consistent then you can mount it and
just go into the database with Outlook or Exmerge. The reason to use
PowerTools would be if you had a corrupt database and just want to get out
of it as much information as you can. This is how the product is sort of
marketed but in the real world it is not able to do that. Maybe the next
version will do a better job but we'll have to wait and see.

To go back to your original question, don't bother trying to backup the edb
files for this app it is just not worth it. Follow the advice of wise old Ed
C and be happy with online restores. One day you will need to be able to do
this in the heat of the moment, you will be glad you have practised it
before.

Thanks Paul,

Must say I am not overly impressed with the Ontrack tool as well. We're
just trying to cut down on the copy process after the utility finds the
PRIV.EDB in the information store on the backup media. It would be great if
it could just read from the tape, open it, and then access the mailboxes, or
messages you want to access.

Thanks,

Paul
