Re: NETIQ vs. MOM

2003-04-03 Thread Jonathan Beeler
Thanks for the info, guys. I'm using it to convince my IT director to go
with NETIQ. This will hopefully help.

 Jonathan,

I have deployed both products, and personally like NetIQ a heck of a lot
 better.

Essentially both products can perform the same levels of monitoring and
reporting, however MOM requires a LOT more legwork to get the same result.
The NetIQ interface as you said is more logical and easier to navigate, and
it seems a lot more thought has been given to providing a clean interface
 for administrators.

Setting up alerts etc for MOM for say a single server is MUCH more tedious
than for NetIQ. MOM's grouping of monitoring into a hierarchal structure
based on attributes creates more confusion IMHO. We have required some
scripting to create custom attributes on servers just to enable some groups
to be created (by pulling back these custom attributes), not necessary on
NetIQ as it allow arbitrary grouping of servers (MOM does allow this as
well, but its not as intuitive). With NetIQ a simple drag/drop of a task or
monitoring job onto the device in question is much easier and allows more
targeted monitoring to occur. Currently with MOM if I really want to
perform specific monitoring of a server, I jump into perfmon and set up
custom monitoring, rather than try and make MOM do it.

Arbitrary grouping / monitoring of different core servers in a different way
is where MOM really falls down IMHO. With NetIQ, I can simply change the
monitored jobs on each specific server, changing thresholds for each one,
and even disabling some jobs if I feel like. Attempting to do this with MOM
is an exercise in frustration, since most settings are based on the
monitoring groups which are attached to a group of servers based on a
specific attribute (registry setting, name etc), not the server itself. For
example, we have 6 exchange servers. If I want to monitor the gateway
server differently, or set different thresholds (eg I'm not concerned if the
outgoing SMTP queue length on the gateway gets about 50, but on a mailbox
server I am), this is MUCH more difficult on MOM than it should be.
Currently, I set the threshold lower for all exchange servers, and simply
ignore the ones from the gateway where they are under *my* determined
threshold. Not pretty, and makes it more difficult for me to set up paging
/ sms interfaces for our after-hours support team, as they get a lot of
 unnecessary alerts.

The scripting interface for both products is pretty-much on par.

I am quite disappointed with the requirement to add-on packs for MOM to
effectively monitor NT v4.0 servers, as this should be a core feature of the
system (yes, I do realise MS want me to upgrade to 2k, 2003, but it isn't
going to happen soon). Add-on packs for both products are neither here nor
there, as you require packs for application-specific monitoring of most
applications (like Exchange, SQL), however NetIQ currently has wider choice
for non-Microsoft applications (IBM, Oracle etc), and wider OS support.

The NetIQ reporting / graphing is miles ahead of MOM, however with MOM you
always can use Excel to provide customised reporting and graphing.

In MOM's defence it is essentially a v1 product (even though it is based on
other well-known product *grin*), so I am expecting big things from MOM
2004. MOM SP1 is addressing a number of my gripes above, so after I apply it
I'll see how much things have improved.

Recently, we've been evaluating NETIQ's AppManager for monitoring our
Exchange environment, including Exchange 2000, 5.5, Antigen, Blackberry,
and IBM Director (hardware management). It would also monitor Windows ad
  AD.

At the same time, we are also evaluating MOM to monitor the same stuff,
however, if we want it to monitor these third party items(, Blackberry,
and IBM Director), we will have to purchase the plug-ins from NETIQ.

So far, I really like NETIQ. It is easy to use, seems very accurate and
is logically organized with more features and monitors right out of the
  box that I like.

My impression of MOM is not so good. It seems that a lot of customization
is required to make it work properly. I think that it would monitor
things effectively, however, I think the implementation time, due to the
increased level of customization involved, would be much greater, and
  ultimately make me less happy.

I would appreciate anyone's thoughts/experiences with either or both of
these products since there is quite a debate going on within my company.

  Thanks

Re: The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service terminated with service-specific error 1276.

2003-04-03 Thread Jonathan Beeler
Although I haven't used that anti-virus software, standard procedure if
you're having problems with getting the store up, uninstall the anti-virus
software. Then work on getting the store up. Once you get the store
running, you can put the anti-virus back up. It's easier to troubleshoot
the core problem without external things affecting it.

 Hi All
I have been having difficulty in getting the IS up and running.
The Exchange server was down due to lack of space. We have backed
up the priv and pub. Then I transfered them to the newly setup
server. Unfortunately, it doesn't startup properly. hence, I
start running isinteg and eseutil to patch up everything.
After repairing, it seems to be ok when i run isinteg -patch.
Then I restarted the Exch IS service but it prompts me
the above error. I have checked the web and it suggested
there should be something to do with anti-virus software. FYI,
i'm using Norton Exch v2 for my prevoius Exchange 5.5 server SP3.
Can anyone provide me with info how to fix this problem.
I checked the MS site unfortuntealy it is down... i think so...
 not able to access.
 Regards,
 James

Real-time. We use Promodag for stats.

I'll have to look into Quest.

Thanks

Are you looking for real-time monitoring or monitoring over time for stats?

Quest's Spotlight tools are good for quickly checking the queues, and the general
health of servers.

RE: the IBM Shark

2002-12-09 Thread Jonathan Beeler
We're running e2k on a shark, but we don't have many users on it. I'm
forseeing I/o issues just from the design. If you can, fight for your own
disk pack so that you don't suffer the pains of the shark for all
design. I lost the battle, here, so I'm sure we'll have slowness and it
will be all exchange's fault. We were going to go with the Hitachi, but
a slick salesman knew the key to our manager's heart (mets tickets) - I
sound like the compulsive liar from Saturday Night Live

We plan on using it for our 17 critical servers and to cut the prices of
all the disk we have. Mostly Windows/SQL, and some AIX and linux. Out the
door we were going to start with 3tb so the rumor of a 3.36tb performance
boundary made me a little wary, but I'm not sure if there is any truth to
 it.

1018 errors - oh the fun

2002-12-09 Thread Jonathan Beeler
so we're getting 1018 errors Here's the details:
single-server single site (ASP stuff with multiple address book views)
nt4.0 sp6a exchange 5.5 with sp4 and post fixes - Antigen 7.0 as the virus
scanner, but previously version 6.5.

We run nightly full backups. We have been receiving 1018 errors only on
weekends - this seems strange to me, since I would think that we would
receive them nightly.

We performed an eseutil /p as well as an isinteg /alltests to clear the
errors - Result: still getting errors.

I realize that 1018's point towards hardware, but we're just not seeing
any hardware problems. We're swapping out the RAID card just to see if
that helps, but the 1018's still need to be fixed.
I spoke to Msft and they said that they don't recommend running a database
in production after a /p is performed, but that the /p is used to prepare
the server to be exmerged and then fixed.
Running an Exmerge to fix the server is a total nightmare, in my mind,
losing all of the appointment stuff and various other settings that I
don't want to lose.
Aside from an Exmerge, does anyone have any suggestions? And does anyone
know why msft doesn't recommend running a /p'd database in production?
Oh, and I forgot: if there's not a hardware error (which so far there is
not) even though msft says that 1018's are rarely generated if there are
no hardware issues, has anyone experienced 1018's without hardware errors
present?

Any suggestions, smart-ass or otherwise would be helpful - and
entertaining.

Thanks

RE: display names during conversion

2002-09-13 Thread Jonathan Beeler

Good point, Ed. You're absolutely correct. During the ADMT process, the
display name is getting placed in there.

The ADC appears to be working fine. Before we run the ADMT, the disabled
user accounts in AD are showing the display name from 5.5.

Now that that's established, how do I alter that from happening?

Thanks for the help.

No way. First, moving the mailbox doesn't affect the display name.
That would be established when you ran the connection agreement.
Second, ADC doesn't talk to the NT SAM. My guess is that the display
name got populated the way you see it from when you ran the ADMT, and
your connection agreement hasn't written over it. Are you sure your
recipient connection agreement is working properly?

I have 3 questions. I know I can block Spam from a particular sender, or
block all the senders from a certain domain, using Message Filting in
Exchange 5.5. I got a list of individual address from the Junk senders
list and Adult senders list but the domains all seem to be different.

  1. Do I have to put them individually or can I import them some how?
  2. Also does anyone have a list of Spam domains that I can put in, in
addition to the address I already have?
  3. Where is the folder called Turf suppose to be in MS Exchange 5.5,
where all of the filtered e-mails are suppose to go. I did a search for
  it
  and it didn't find it.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
  Thanks

   In answer to your question:
The TURF Directory has to be created and does not exist by default. The

Don't waste your time. I set up an elaborate set up to use the turf
directory. I have over 2000 entries. And guess what? Some messages still
get in, and it's a total hassle to maintain. We're decommissioning the
set up and will no longer be supporting blocking spam. Let users set up
their client rules for the junk mail. They're the ones who put their
names out there in the first place, let them deal with it

I did finally create that folder. But I still don't see any of the emails

my company is looking for a new anti-virus product. our contract with
Norton is up and we have issues with it (one day the corp. edition is
running, the next day it is disabled and a reboot will not fix. a
complete uninstall and the re-install is needed, some servers it will not
 load at all, etc..).

looking at other exchange aware packages, (sybari, panda etc) they want
the outlook clinet installed on the exchange server for e-mail
notifications. Norton sent e-mail notifications, and there are no outlook
clients on any of the servers, to the sender/reciever stating that there
was a virus in the message and it was deleted.

are there any av programs that will send e-mail notifications without the

e-mail notifications without the outlook client installed??

I don't see how it would. Just because it has a bad address wouldn't stop
it from sending. The virus (if properly designed) doesn't care if the

IMS routing question:

2002-06-24 Thread Jonathan Beeler

Currently, we’re running Exchange 5.5 SP4 with hotfixes on an NT4.0 SP6A
servers. We have 2 mailbox servers with one IMS/Bridgehead server. One
of the mailbox servers also has an IMC with a cost of 99 as a “just in
case” scenario.
Currently, our Internet mail comes through the UNIX firewall which
performs a relay function using post.office. The firewall is going to be
changed and will not perform this relay function any longer. Currently,
our ISP performs queuing for us for up to 4 days worth of mail should our
site be unavailable.
My question is this: Since we will not longer have this relaying function
from the UNIX firewalls, the mail will go directly via port 25 to the
Exchange IMS/bridgehead server. The UNIX administrator insists that it is
a good idea to put a UNIX Sendmail server in between the firewall and the
Exchange server for queuing purposes, however, I don’t see the need for
it. Can someone please explain to me if this UNIX server is necessary?
To me it seems like an extra hop for no reason.

Thanks

RE: SMTP Connector for Internet Mail

2002-06-24 Thread Jonathan Beeler

If you have the Exchange 2000 server joined to the 5.5 site, if you don't
configure the SMTP virtual server, it will continue to use the 5.5 IMC.
If you configure the virtual server in 2000, and change the costs, you
shouldn't have to remove the 5.5 IMS at all. I would think that the 5.5's
GWART would get modified and route accordingly.

Of course, the relay idea mentioned earlier would definitely work, I'm
just trying to think within the realms of 2000.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong (which happens more often than not)

Thanks

Exchange on Shark SAN solution

2002-05-17 Thread Jonathan Beeler

My company has recently purchased a shark SAN that they are putting the
company's various UNIX and windows applications on. They are pushing to
put Exchange on it, however, I am somewhat skeptical due to some testing
with another SAN (Xiotech) that was unimpressive from a performance
standpoint.
My questions are 2 fold:

For those of you running on SANs that are shared with other applications,
was there a specific way to dedicate a certain number of drives to
Exchange so that it doesn't have to share them with other applications to
ensure best performance? All opinions would be much appreciated since the
SAN world is new to me and it seems like there are many different ways to
configure them.

The second part of my question is if anyone here is running Exchange 2000
on a SHARK and what they're experience has been.

Thanks for all your help.

Email review

Being a Securities company, by SEC law, we have to archive and review all

We also want to get pst's off of the network into a better form of

I group these 2 products together because many of the vendors do the same.

We have narrowed it down to these 3 companies. Each have their positives

Multi-2000 domain

2002-02-22 Thread Jonathan Beeler

Currently, I have a single 5.5 site in a single domain. We are planning
to keep 5.5 co-existing with 2000 during the migration.
For Windows 2000, we would like to create a parent/child domain
(Management decision for no reason other than to add complexity)
For the purposes of clarity, I'll call it the King domain, and the Prince
domain. The King domain is the parent domain and the Prince domain would
be a sub domain of the King domain. Users will be logging into the sub
domain. My question is this: Which domain should I place the Exchange
2000 server in?

Thanks in advance.

2002-02-22 Thread Jonathan Beeler

we are planning on doing mailbox moves, so that's something to consider.
Thanks.

I don't think you can move/migrate mailboxes between domains. Not to sure
though. I would still put e2k in the king domain though.

Are you wanting to move/migrate mailboxes?

Multiple bounce backs

2002-01-16 Thread Jonathan Beeler

This is what is happening: A user sends an email to a bad address
and receives this error:,[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Obviously, the syntax is incorrect with that comma in the beginning of it.
The user receives the following message multiple times.

553 ,[EMAIL PROTECTED]... Unbalanced ''
553 [EMAIL PROTECTED]... Unbalanced ''
550 ... User unknown
553 ',[EMAIL PROTECTED]' ,[EMAIL PROTECTED], Hurst, Fiona
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]... Unbalanced ''
553 [EMAIL PROTECTED], Hurst, Fiona
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]... Unbalanced ''

In addition, if there were any other CC'd users in this, they will receive
the message multiple times as well.
What I have done in the past, is to manually remove the message from the
outbound queue which stops the problem.

Our current configuration is Exchange 5.5 sp4 with post sp4 hotfixes,
Antigen version 6.20.0842
A Gauntlet Firewall (which I don't administer so I don't have much info
about it)
Our IMC uses straight IP to point to the firewall, instead of using DNS.
We have tried the DNS setting, and this fixed the situation, however, due
to internal DNS situations, we can't keep this configuration.

I've spoken to Microsoft a multitude of times about this and they keep
blaming the firewall. Of course, the firewall people keep blaming
Exchange.

Has any one seen this, or have any suggestions?

Thanks

Anti-Spam software

2002-01-14 Thread Jonathan Beeler

Does anyone know of any anti-spam software out there that works with
Exchange 5.5?

Personally, I don't care if user's receive it. It's their own fault for
putting their email address all over the web, but since people have
requested that I look into it, I will do so.

Any suggestions would be of help.

Thanks!

Address Book Lists

2002-01-14 Thread Jonathan Beeler

Currently, we have Address Book Lists configured to work within our
Exchange 5.5 organization. We intend to bring this same concept over to
2000. Does anyone know of any articles that explain how to perform this?

I've been looking in Technet and on their Premiere site, but can't find
anything.
Thanks.

RE: Anti-Spam software

2002-01-14 Thread Jonathan Beeler

Aside from the 13 year old geek, we're using Antigen for virus protection.

I currently add domains to the message filtering area on the IMC, but as
you know, it's pretty inefficient.

number of recipients

2001-12-21 Thread Jonathan Beeler

There are some users in my company who utilize a program that enables the
user to place multiple recipients in Outlook (as many as 4-5000). Aside
from the fact that I hate the application, user's don't realize the
ramifications that it can have, not to mention, the nastygrams that we've
received from other companies for blasting over 2000 2mb attachments to
them.
Is there a way to restrict the number of recipients a user can sent to in
Exchange 5.5?

Thanks

Instant Messaging logging

2001-11-14 Thread Jonathan Beeler

My company is a securities firm and has various SEC requirements to
follow, including logging all communications with clients. This includes
Email and Instant Messaging communications. Users are usin various types
of Instant messenger, including Yahoo, AOL, and MSN. We need to capture
that data. Since it is not on a centralized server that we manage, we
need a software that performs this function. One company that we've
looked at is Facetime and IMlogic (Zantaz) Does anyone know of any
others that might perform this function?

Thanks

I've been looking through technet, but I can't seem to find out the

Can someone tell me where I can find instructions on how to remove custom
forms from the forms library?

Thanks in advance.
