RE: Move E2K servers between AD containers?

2003-11-03 Thread Brian Davies
Brent,

Computers isn't a container in AD - it's a folder and therefore can't have
a policy applied to it. The only policy that will apply to Computers is
the default domain policy so it doesn't matter where you move your Exchange
server the default domain policy will still be applied unless you block
policy inheritance on the OU you put the Exchange servers into, but then you
must re-apply all the required policy objects on the new OU. Yes you can
move servers to any OU you like but you must make sure the right policies are
being applied.

Regards

Brian

 Hello,

 E2K: 2 Servers, same site/group, SP3+September'03
Rollup+recent critical security patch, Scanmail 6.1, native
 OS: w2K, SP4 + all critical fixes , native

The powers that be would like to move all the Servers into a
new OU Servers container in AD.

They're trying to deploy some policies against the default
Computers container the Exchange servers currently exist
in, so want the Exchange Servers out of it.

It seemed to work OK in the lab after moving and rebooting.
I know some of the Exchange Groups can't be moved out of the
Default Users container. Any problem moving Exchange
Servers between containers? They are not DCs.

 Thank you,

Hiding mailboxes from GAL, but not containers in Address Book vie w

2002-08-28 Thread Moore, Brett

I need to hide a mailbox from the GAL (The root of the GAL) but need to be
able to drill down into containers and still select the mailbox in the
address book view.

Any ideas on how to do this?

If I hide from address book it hides it from GAL and any containers
contained within

I have seen many posts on this from other newgroups, but no replies. The
big man wants it to where people can send to consultants by drilling into
containers. He doesn't want people being able to send to consultants
accidently when users often select the entire GAL and send email to people
who shouldn't of received it. One idea was to create a contacts folder on
Public Folders but that wasn't acceptable.

Thanks for the help

RE: Hiding mailboxes from GAL, but not containers in Address Book vie w

2002-08-28 Thread Moore, Brett

Your right, you can still send to a hidden mailbox, but when you compose a
message and try to select a hidden user out of the GAL they are not listed
in the GAL, which if the way it is suppose to be. I'm trying to figure out
a way for it to not show in the GAL but to show up in the Containers
underneath the GAL or some other solution to hide the mailbox at the root of
the GAL but not everywhere.

What you could do is create another shared contact list with those

In a large Exchange 5.5 environment organization would you place everyone in
the recipients container or make different containers for organizational
levels?

Once this admin uses exmerge does the new janitor have to rebuild his

Thanks.. I like things explained so I can understand. You did that well.

RE: Containers

2002-01-07 Thread Doug Hampshire

I put them all into containers based on attractiveness. First all guys go
into one container since I don't rate guys on attractiveness (YMMV).

Then I put all IT chicks into a container called Totally Hot. As evidence
for this, may I point out Kelly, Kimmie, Missy, Jennifer, Michele (yes, I'm
missing that damned accent character), Darcy, and several other members of
this list that I have met over the years. After that I place all other women
in containers after a subjective review based on my own personal tastes.
After all, it's all about me.

This method only fails if someone has a sex change operation or has plastic
surgery that goes horribly wrong. Tragic farm equipment accidents can affect
the outcome also.

Joe Smith hires on and goes to work for Mike Bloggs in Engineering. So you
create his mailbox in Engineering. A few years later he moves to Marketing
to be a technical rep. How do you move his mailbox from the Engineering
container to the Marketing containter?

You don't. Not without deleting and recreating his account.

RE: Containers

2002-01-05 Thread Ed Crowley

Use containers only to differentiate between types of objects. For
example, you might make containers for:

Users
MS Mail Mailboxes
Services (like Help Desk, Payroll, etc.)
Customers (custom recipients)
Distribution Lists
Public Folders (i.e., GAL entries for them)

So, the answer is a very definite leave all your user mailboxes in one
container. You'll regret it later if you want to move mailboxes from
one container to another because you can't.

It's very difficult to move individuals between containers. Unless you have
the power to keep people from changing jobs, use one contain for people,
others for resources and whatnot.

RE: Moving mailboxes between recipient containers

2001-12-18 Thread Chris Scharff

It can be done by upgrading to Exchange 2000 where recipient containers no
longer exist in the context that you currently think of them.

You say you don't want to use views, so w/o an upgrade you're stuck with
deletion and recreation to 'move' the mailboxes in question.
