We use the "hosts" file, not "lmhosts" in our LAN. That'll work, but when using Windows UNC-style names, the lmhosts file is looked at first--if present. If Windows can't find it, it tries the hosts file for an FQDN-style name as a substitute (even if the dots don't exist in the name).
