[FairfieldLife] Earthquake in India was merely bad aim...
...it was really intended for that scorpion nation Britain. 7.6-Magnitude Quake Hits Pakistan, Afghanistan, India ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (Oct. 8) - A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake rocked South Asia on Saturday, killing at least 21 people and injuring hundreds in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan. Pakistan's army said initial reports indicate the damage was widespread in that country. One of the hardest-hit areas appeared to be Kashmir, the Himalayan territory divided between India and Pakistan. Both countries reported dozens of homes damaged, along with some schools, mosques and office buildings. Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~--> Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Groups. [FairfieldLife] Well, avidyaa!
The root of the word _avidyaa_ prolly is 'vid' (= to know). Obviously , _vidyaa_ means something like 'knowledge', and _a-vidyaa_ is the opposite of that, 'ignorance'. From the same root are e.g. words like 'veda' and 'vaidya'. There are some five suutras in Paatañjala-yoga- darshanam that contain the word _avidyaa_. Suutra number 5 in the _saadhana-paada_ (Chapter 2) seems like the definition of _avidyaa: (legend: z = sh in Harvard-Kyoto -convention) anityaazuci-duHkhaanaatmasu nitya-zuci- sukhaatmakhyaatir avidyaa (without sandhi: anitya; azuci; duHkha; an_aatmasu; nitya; zuci; sukha; aatma-khyaatiH; avidyaa.) The Sanskrit syntax of that suutra is quite "interesting": in noneternal-impure-misery-not_self eternal-pure-happiness-self -"knowledge" (is) ignorance Taimni tries to convey that in English like this: /avidyaa/ is taking the non-eternal, impure, evil and non-aatman to be eternal, pure, good and aatman respectively. The next time you see Taimni, could you ask him for me if he could point out something in the universe that is non-eternal at its most fundamental level. Only higher > consciousness among the populace will create a situation where more > intelligent leaders are enabled. See, we *used* to have more intelligent leaders, even if they were bad ones. That was why I was comparing Bush with Nixon. Shakespeare could have written a play about Nixon; he's a Richard III-type character. But Shakespeare would never have written a play about Bush. He just doesn't have the *stature*. There's more to it than lack of intelligence (and he isn't stupid IQ-wise). Bush doesn't have a tragic flaw; his flaws don't rise to the level of tragedy. Bush wouldn't even be worth writing a history play about because he isn't an interesting enough personality. For that matter, Shakespeare could have written a play about Clinton, or Lyndon Johnson, or Kennedy, or Eisenhower, even Jimmy Carter, or Bush I. Bush is at the center of some of the most important events and trends in American (and world) history. But he's just a cipher, an *absence*. There's no there there. If Shakespeare *had* to write a play about the Bush era, the main character would have to be Karl Rove, or perhaps Cheney; Bush would be a minor character. That's why I say he's a mistake--it's as if the trends of time took a detour they weren't supposed to take and got stuck in a dead end. Yahoo! [FairfieldLife] Our Inner Apes
Interesting review in the NY Times of what sounds like a very intriguing book by a primatologist. Temple Grandin, the reviewer, is the "high-functioning" autistic woman who has become rather well known for, among other things, her designs for humane livestock facilities and her advocacy for autistic people. October 9, 2005 'Our Inner Ape': Hey Hey, We're the Monkeys By TEMPLE GRANDIN Our closest genetic cousins, the apes, are capable of great empathy but also of violent, ruthless killing. Frans de Waal, a prominent primatologist, compares our social behavior with that of two species of apes: chimpanzees and bonobos (which look like smaller, more upright chimps). Despite their physical similarities, the two species behave very differently. Bonobos live in a relatively peaceful matriarchy; when conflicts do arise, instead of fighting they often use sexual activity to resolve them, defusing the aggression with friendly physical contact. Like hippies, they make love, not war. Chimp society, however, is a male-dominated hierarchy based on power. Unlike the gentle bonobos, who seldom kill, chimps will hunt for meat and even kill members of rival groups. In this fascinating book, de Waal suggests that the two species represent sides of our own nature. We have "not one but two inner apes," he writes, speculating that humans may act like a hybrid of bonobos and chimps. (Little is known about actual bonobo-chimp hybrids except for a group that lives in a French traveling circus and strikes visitors with its "gentility and sensitivity.")... Did anyone see it? I resisted it all this time, but to use up the last prepaid credits at a Paris DVD-rental place, I rented it and am watching it now. I don't think I said that Americans *deserve* the Great Depression Squared in a karmic sense (although there is certainly a case to be made for that), or that such an event would be the result of some kind of "Natural Law," only that an event of that magni- tude may be what is necessary to wake them up. [FairfieldLife] A message from Bevan Morris: Maharishi on cell phones
Title: A message from Bevan Morris: Maharishi on cell phones Dear Faculty and Ideal Administrators: One point Maharishi mentioned during the Golden Jubilee Guru Purnima Celebration was to avoid cell phones because of radiation. I would like to ask everyone to do this for the sake of your lasting good health. I think we should have cell phones only as an emergency device, and not use them as a regular way of talking and working. Even for emergency use, it's best to use cell phones with speakers in them that can be held away from the head, or using a plastic air-tube and ear-piece, which do not contain metal conductors and which also allow the cell phone to be distanced from the head. Cordless telephones seem to pose the same hazards as cell phones. I realize that there is a great deal of convenience in the use of cell phones, and it can save critical time. But better to find a way to always conduct business on a land-line, not on a cell phone. Perhaps you will have suggestions on we can communicate with someone urgently without risking their brain through radiation from these phones. I would also like to make sure that you test the area around your desk to see that radiation from power sources and electronic devices is not reaching you at dangerous levels. I am asking our Safety Director James Bedinger and Jefferson Aikens to provide you with guidelines and measuring instruments that will allow you to do this. Go back further (in time and in this group) and you will read a more nuanced (comprehensive?) view of Mr. Bev's sexuality. Latest news from Skem: "BIG" community meeting last week. Upshot: The locals have "permission" to seek to recreate their community elsewhere in England (site already identified). The developer of the site (the lucky guy! - not being sexist here, just rushing), must give 1/3 of all profits to International, 1/3 to British National (i.e. to an organization that is not doing anything right now), and he gets to keep a 1/3 for his little old self. As you can imagine, developers are coming to Skem in droves waving their Raams. More generally, a lot of good old British denial in Skem at the moment, but what has happened is slowly sinking in. [FairfieldLife] Re: Poll: Groups Unhappy With Bush Performance
I agree with every word you write here, Judy. I was thinking a few days ago of how Bush seems like a Nixon figure now. The indictments are closing in and he is looking increasingly isolated and desperate. He is simply a man who is not up to the job (although that part is not like Nixon). I saw Bush talk about Miers yesterday. First he said she was a "fantastic woman." Then he said she was "honest and open." These are things you might say when giving a reference for someone applying for a job as a salesclerk or something, not a Supreme Court nominee, who should have a first-class legal mind. Bush is a strange aberration in our history, and the sooner we are rid of him the better. --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, "authfriend" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > What cracks me up is to see conservatives saying > things like this (quote from Kathryn Jean Lopez > on the Corner, National Review Online's group > blog): > > "The president just took some questions. Re: [FairfieldLife] Mel Gibson's "The Passion of Christ"
Some friends rented it a year ago when I was vacationing with them. We ripped it apart. You get the impression that the phrase "Jesus died for your sins" was really aimed at the group that voted for his death. No there is nothing much spiritual about this film. I saw "Serenity" this last week since I enjoyed the Firefly series on DVD. It is not a particularly great movie as the director is still in TV phase and overstated stuff a bit but still worth a see. I also rented "Inside Deep Throat" (not for the bliss ninny set) and thought it was an excellent documentary that explores the sexual attitudes of the 1970's. One preview I saw with Serenity that looked interesting is AeonFlux with Charlize Theron: www.aeonflux.com - Bhairitu TurquoiseB wrote: >Did anyone see it? [FairfieldLife] Re cert techers returning and Investing in FF a joke, CAFO
A local FF friend told me that many recert teachers are returning as they did not meet their quotas of teaching 2 people per month and the movement thus has not paid them. I dont know how many this is but I would say as a whole yet another failed project we will not even hear about. It will just fade away like the pundits. And if the peace palaces that are suppose to arrive to FF come as fast as the pundits yet another failed project. It is a wonder anyone would follow the TMO at this point I just don't get it. On another front they MUM someone are building 4 small SV houses in the parking lot in Utopia Park this and the plan to build more is in this weeks MUM review at all news stands in FF at all the shops. YOu can see the dirt being cleared. OK sounds good get rid of trailers build some small SV houses for anyone who wants to rent or own them and at $110 a ft so we know they wont be grand but Ok still OK. Then we get a letter today from Scott Herried heading this project up for MUM looking for investors to form an LLC to fund this little venture saying that is a demand for SV rental which may be true, is true. However if you are a wise person you are not investing anymore in FF nor buying at the moment nothing appreciates here nothing has even been a good investment except for a short period when there was a building boom but ask Doug Greenfield who is sitting on empty office space and now investing in Fl himself. To add to the already volitil market here we now have to content with CAFO www.Jfan.org for those who want more info on the hogs. It is a joke invest? I will be happy if I can sell my house some day. Back at the ranch I know of a couple that just bought that house on B St whose back yard faces the Grants near Earls for close to $399 as the price of building the size they wanted went up to $600K and some others are still planning to build as they are under the illusion they will sell their mansions. Some are waiting to sell first like Huggins and other like Hurlin's are already building an addition on to some Abundant Ecco village house when their old house has not sold and probably wont for the price they want or maybe at any price. Nichols think they can sell their cute house but dont kow where they will go but want vastu and other various people that cant really afford to are building $500 houses just to have vastu as MMY says too. I guess it is all relative if you have the money but this town is the riskiest investment on the planet and MUM wants to raise a private group of investors to build these SV houses on campus telling us it is a great investment. Well guess they will find some suckers out there. Oh and the Marcus are now trying to dump their house at any price as they bought the Grants. It may serve their needs the Grants who am I to judge but their exisitin house is so much nicer just not SV but it is big kids are gone and it is 2 stories they probably dont want it and they are pretty fanatical SV fans and Grants log house is one story but needed alot of upgrades and pardon me Rick as your sister lives on that street is it a dump of a neighborhood but they do it for SV go figure? what a town. Even Patti Hamilton local realtor says it is amazing what people are giving up to have smaller not as well build SV. I am thinking if the hog thing goes thru the in town houses may be come slightly more desirable again SV or not than the country SV houses. This town it all depends on which way the winds blows. Pun intended. There is a CAFO going up on Pleasant Plain right across the street from Cambridge's new offices. You cant really tell but the trucks were there this week putting in the electrical for the barbed wire. I guess those involved know the signs and locations. Eric adn his wife and Cambridge are filing their own law suit and the home owners in that area are additionally filing one. I hope it stops it. The more we can sue and discourage this and other corporations the closer will be to getting this out of our town as a factor and will be known to others as a town they should stay away from us as we are a rich proactive town and will keep them busy in court. the wealthy home owners who live in the country are really in trouble and should be footing this bill as best they can since they have the money and are most affected not that we all don't want to help but we cant afford what they can and we don't stand to lose as much on property value although alot to us and equal to all in quality of life and health risks. It really is a big problem. It is hard to belive that many are so oblivious and are buying new expensive SV homes with this threat. I would be waiting. So many big mansions SV in the country will now be involved in law suits amazing. Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~--> Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Groups. Make Yahoo! your home page http://us.cl

Thanks for the news. My sister says the sale of the Grant's house to the Marcus's fell through. There are subcultures in FF which are quite oblivious to what happens in the TM/MUM world. The university could disappear entirely (not that I want it to) and I could be quite happy living here and have plenty of wonderful friends. But if the pig thing gets out of hand, none of us may want to live here but most of won't be able to afford to sell our houses and move elsewhere. Let's hope, as you say, that the rich folks fight the pig thing tooth and nail. They have enough money to stop it if it can be stopped, and hopefully they have the determination. Yahoo! Title: How much sleep do enlightened beings need? "One night, I wanted to see for myself how Old Khyentse slept. So I hung around outside his door and took an occasional peek throughout the night. Khyentse did not seem to go to sleep at all. But late at night he loosened his belt, relaxed in his seat and exhaled. Then he just sat there with wide-open eyes, still breathing deeply. He might have been asleep or not, but he didn't move for an hour, still with open eyes. Then he cleared his throat loudly and his breathing went back to normal. The sound was enough to signal his attendant to prepare morning tea. That was how Old Khyentse passed his nights." -from Blazing Splendor To subscribe, send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FairfieldLife/ and click 'Join This Group!' According to Howard Melamed, CEO of CellAntenna Corporation, external cellular antennas drastically decrease the cellular phones level of microwave radiation absorbed by the human body when used properly. Studies examining the health effects of prolonged exposure to cellular phone electromagnetic radiation (EMR) have been inconclusive or have produced mixed results. But the reality is that cellular phones emit microwave signals that are partially absorbed by the body as users make and receive calls on cellular phones. The radiation level produced by cellular phones is exacerbated by environmental interference and sparse cellular signals, as phones are engineered to operate at full power while in areas with a limited cellular signal. Cell phone users can route the cellular radiation away by installing an external antenna that connects to their cell phone via an adapter. The antenna is then placed at a distance away from them. Additionally, external antennas reduce the radiation power output level of cell phones by helping them relay their signals more efficiently to the nearest cellular towers. Having lower power output has the added effect of lowering battery power consumption and increasing talk time. Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~--> Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Groups. Experiments have shown that the antenna radiation travels up the wire ear- piece cord to the ear-piece at the head. If people think they are going to get enlightened by living in SV houses they are complete fools. Why MMY is shilling SV is beyond me. Realization has absolutely nothing to do with the shape or the orientation of the house you live in. Some effect on "energy"? Sure, why not, but enlightenment? No way. It seems so ironic that after well over 20 years of trying to establish a large group here in FF, we've finally managed to get the numbers we need, with the only problem being that they're hogs, not people. I wish we could deter these CAFOs by using animal cruelty laws, but in Iowa these are weak and do not apply to livestock as long as you can argue that what you are doing is standard practice. --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, pibssmith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Legally they can do it but we can deter them with nuisance law suits > and all help but writing our legislators. They saw all these fires around Dilgo Khyentse's cabin. Occasionally they would see then coming from inside his cabin. He mentioned this to Khyentse's wife and she said that they were guardians which he was communicating with--and of course he was famous for receiving and then teaching various gnostic mind treasures. Incidentally "old Khyentse" in the original post refers to Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo who IIRC divided his reincarnation mindstream into 25 different emanations. I have heard MMY say that SV housing decreases negative influences, and makes life more prosperous etc. I don't actually remember him saying that people are going to get enlightened by simply living in SV houses. Do you have a quote? Btw (just for fun) were you living in a house when enlightenment happened? Were most other enlightened ones also living in houses when IT occurred? If so, there seems to be a high correlation between housing and enlightenment. By golly, perhaps simply living in houses will get people enlightened. "Correlation is not causation" you rebute. Of course its not. So what is the Causation of Enlightenment? Nothing? Then why do anything, if there is no cause? Why are you not also rejecting all tools, crutches and sadhanas? Or perhaps you are? "No causes, only perhaps Grace" you respond -- or do you? Increased satva perhaps? Does that set up conditions for "Grace to descend" per your view? If so, could SV housing possibly have a direct or indirect effect on satva? Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~--> Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Groups. [FairfieldLife] Re: A message from Bevan Morris: Maharishi on cell phones
Lest anyone think this is more paranoid thinking, keep in mind that the Motorola engineer who was testing the first prototype DID die of a brain tumor on the same side of his head that he held the phone on. Motorola then dropped the power output drastically to the point that its difficult if impossible to establish a correlation between cell phone use and brain cancer. HOWEVER, brain imaging of people while they are using cell phones show that there is a clear effect on brain functioning, at least close to the ear that the phone is next to. In young kids (4 or so years or younger), the effect goes at least halfway through their brain. No-one knows exactly what this kind of electronnic radiation does to the brain, if anything, but I avoid cell phones use though I *will* talk to someone for a minute if they ask to talk to me on one. --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, Rick Archer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Dear Faculty and Ideal Administrators: > > One point Maharishi mentioned during the Golden Jubilee Guru Purnima > Celebration was to avoid cell phones because of radiation. > > I would like to ask everyone to do this for the sake of your lasting good > health. > > I think we should have cell phones only as an emergency device, and not use > them as a regular way of talking and working. Eating healthy food has an effect on enlightenment's progression, assuming that there is a physiological component, of course. Your home/work environment should have an effect as well. I don't think that sv is the thing to have highest on the list of priorities, but since it is a passive, 24/7 effect (should it exist), its the easiest to continue to engage in (you just live in the SV- compliant home/office and that aspect of your environment is taken care of automatically) and perhaps it would facilitate everything else.
