Thanks for the Bo Diddley post Barry. He would have been a man to see live that
is for sure. Sorry I missed him. He drips improvisation.

What is so cool about him for me is how he was using international rhythms in
his music and expanding early rock's influences. He made me rethink how much
liberty I can take with combining rhythms in my own work. It is all connected
to the New Orleans gumbo of influences I am studying in Professor Longhair's
piano style.

Great clip too!

That really was it, Curtis. He was as in the moment as any great performer
I've ever seen. I have heard tales that he was not always as gracious and as
cool onstage as he was when I saw him (he had a rep for spitting on white folks
in the first few rows during his angry young days), but he certainly was when I
saw him. And the man was FUNNY! He'd ad-lib, and then he'd do hilarious stuff
like taking one of his own classic songs -- which are, after all, the Vedas of
rock 'n roll -- and then do a version of them as would be performed by a Las
Vegas lounge singer. I was literally on the floor laughing.

I helped Bo Diddley find a drummer once. It was in 1971. I was 19,
reading underground comics one sleepy afternoon at Roach Ranch West, a
spacious, hippie-stuff shop in Albuquerque, when a black man wearing a
big black hat walked in and said: I'm Bo Diddley.

When I lived in Santa Fe,  I used to see Bo Diddley all the time. He lived in a
suburb of nearby Albuquerque, where he had once actually been Honorary Sheriff
(Bo Diddley's A Gunslinger) and would play gigs at local clubs and casinos from
time to time. He was in his 80s, and still put on one of the best stage shows
I've ever seen. He was a FIERCE guitarist, still able to play up a storm, and
in pretty much any style you can imagine.

One of the best things about watching Bo perform was him interacting with each
new
band. That's right...he didn't have a band. What he'd do when someone hired
him for a gig is call around that town and find out the name of the best young
garage band in town. Then he'd call them up and say, Hey, it's Bo Diddley. No,
really. I've got a gig in your town on Saturday. Want to be my backup band?

He'd meet with them before the gig, expecting them to have learned his songs,
and they'd jam for an hour or two just to make sure it was a good fit, and then
they'd go onstage together. It was magic. You could tell that these kids were
having the time of their lives playing behind one of the true legends of rock
'n roll, and you could tell that Bo was having fun, too.

Onstage he was funny, he was charming, and for an 80+ year-old-man he was
damned sexy, too. A true legend, and to the end.

Bo Diddley was a name I always heard, of course, but really knew nothing about,
until I play those selections you had below, Richard. A real nice discovery.

In high school I was a mild Grateful Dead fan. One of my best friends was an
ardent fan.

But I recall when Jerry Garcia died. feeling a deep loss, and also a renewed
interest on my part in learning about him. I have him on a pedestal.

Those Bo Diddley guitar riffs are truly hypnotic! Thanks for the replies.
MJ may be interested in this about Otis Spann:

In late 1954, he teamed up with harmonica player Billy Boy Arnold, drummer
Clifton James, and bass player Roosevelt Jackson, and recorded demos of
I'm A Man and Bo Diddley. They re-recorded the songs at Chess Studios
with a backing ensemble comprising Otis Spann (piano), Lester Davenport
(harmonica), Frank Kirkland (drums), and Jerome Green (maracas). The record
was released in March 1955, and the A-side, Bo Diddley, became a number
one RB hit.

 Who do you love?

Tombstone hand and a graveyard mine,
 Just 22 and I don't mind dying.

 Who do you love?

I rode around the town, use a rattlesnake whip,
Take it easy arlene, don't give me no lip,

 Who do you love?

Night was dark, but the sky was blue,
Down the alley, the ice-wagon flew,
Heard a bump, and somebody screamed,
You should have heard just what I seen.

One of the founders, if not the founder of rock 'n roll, Bo Diddley
invented the rock signature beat, a simple five-accent clave driving
rhythm. Hard edge electric guitar - one of the corner stones of rock. In
2004, Rolling Stone ranked him No. 20 on their list of the 100 Greatest

Excellent post.

I just started studying him seriously this year when I was getting into
Afro-carribian rhythms. I got his Chess recordings box set and dug in. Rhythm
king.

Now I include one of his songs in my sets and just lean on the rhythm using the
guitar as a percussion instrument. Every verse is more hypnotic it is so much
fun to sing.

Who Do You Love

I walk 47 miles of barbed wire,
I use a cobra-snake for a necktie,
I got a brand new house on the roadside,
Made from rattlesnake hide,
I got a brand new chimney made on top,
Made out of a human skull,
Now come on take a walk with me, arlene,
And tell me, who do you love?

2014-04-24 Thread TurquoiseBee
When I lived in Santa Fe,  I used to see Bo Diddley all the time. He lived in a
suburb of nearby Albuquerque, where he had once actually been Honorary Sheriff
(Bo Diddley's A Gunslinger) and would play gigs at local clubs and casinos from
time to time. He was in his 80s, and still put on one of the best stage shows
I've ever seen. He was a FIERCE guitarist, still able to play up a storm, and
in pretty much any style you can imagine.

One of the best things about watching Bo perform was him interacting with each
new band.

We saw this band a few years ago and we listen to them on PRI every week.
So, we decided to see them again soon. This is going to be a very busy time
for music lovers around here what with the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo
followed by South by Southwest (SxSW) the music and film festival in Austin
(Rodriquez will probably be there and Linklater too). In this video the Jim
Cullum Jazz Band is joined by David Jellema when they performed at the
historic Pearl Brewery in San Antonio Texas, for the public radio series
 Riverwalk Jazz in October 2009:
