Can Maharishi call for a WPA in Santa Fe? It's a nice
place...lots of spas and Ayurvedic clinics...

I saw anti-nuclear activist Dr. Helen Caldicott speak
in Santa Fe once, and she told an interesting story
about one of her trips to the Soviet Union, and her
perspective on how the Cold War ended. She showed her
presentation on the medical effects of nuclear war
(I've seen it...it's horrifying, and something that
really hasn't been seen by most people on the planet
*including* most of the world leaders since the 1950s)
at a symposium at which Gorbachev was present. According
to her, after the presentation he wept openly onstage
(Gorbachev has children), held her hand and promised to
do what he could to end the madness. Shortly afterwards
the first real advances in nuclear disarmament began to
take place.

Just a comment with regard to your belief that one
person can make a difference.

Nukes are not an option. Anyone who has seen what they
do to the human beings who survive the initial blast
would know that. Unless they don't consider these people
human beings, of course...

Whoa.

The frightening thing about this post is that the logic and
rationale is, sadly, right.

Uh, I don't think so, Barry.

I think we have to take Robert's words as they appear here: he is
advocating the use of America's nuclear weapons against Iran...now.

Perhaps you made the assumption you do above (that Robert was
commenting on the likelihood of this happening, not advocating that
it actually be done) because you had just finished writing that
conciliatory post to Robert.

Or you can't imagine anyone on this forum (or anywhere for that
matter!) advocating the use of nuclear weapons.

May I suggest that you NOT make the assumption you did above and now
respond to what Robert has actually written...that he does, in fact,
advocate the dropping of nuclear weapons on his fellow human beings.

Nobody in their right mind wants to use nukes. The key words,"in their
right mind". Do we let a government that threatens the world have them? What
will it take to keep them from getting them? Would the Axis powers have used
nukes during WW2 had they had them first?

Too late. It already owns most of them. It dropped
the only two such weapons used so far against humans.

I don't think the idea will be to use 10 to 20 megaton bombs on Iran and
wipe out hundreds of thousands of civilians. If it boils down to a military
solution the idea is to use very small tactical nukes on bunker busters that
will penetrated deep into the nuclear labs under ground before exploding,
minimizing casualtiesabove the surface while wiping out any infrastructure
underground. Fortunately, these bunkers seem to be far from major populated
areas. Of course if it doesn't have the complete desired results, Iranian
leaders could probably buy a nuke from North Korea, if they haven't already, and
seek revenge.
