You read into an ellipsis whatever you want.

How odd, you appear to have deleted the rest of my
reply:

"The difference between enlightenment and ignorance
would be in the *response* to the attack.

"(And even among the ignorant, as I've noted already,
there can be a difference between perceiving an attack
--via laughing-at or otherwise--and feeling attacked.)"

I know it must burn your butt, Barry, to know that
your attacks don't provoke fear and distress, but
it's something you really should learn to live with.

Actually it was the *overuse* of smiley faces that
was criticized in that instance, because they seemed
insincere and/or juvenile. If you put smiley faces
after nearly everything you say, they lose their
meaning.

And a smiley face following a clearly hostile remark
is hypocritical.

Cool. Then if you ever realize enlightenment,
nothing will change for you. Sounds like a vision
of enlightenment that only you could have dreamed
up -- before enlightenment, a horrible fear of being
laughed at; after enlightenment, a horrible fear of
being laughed at.:-) :-) :-)

I get that...it's a kind of alphanumeric mooning.

:-)

Speaking of which, is a colon followed by a hyphen
followed by a close parenthesis an attack? I'm
thinking of the diatribes against smiley faces that
went down here some time ago. Do you think it was
the symbol itself that was perceived as offensive,
or the possibility that the symbol stood for laughter,
and thus was by definition an attack? :-)

Yes.

No.

The difference between enlightenment and ignorance
would be in the *response* to the attack.

(And even among the ignorant, as I've noted already,
there can be a difference between perceiving an attack
--via laughing-at or otherwise--and feeling attacked.)

Ah...as eloquent as always, I see. :-)

Two followup questions:

1. Do you think that a person who is enlightened
would perceive being laughed at as an attack? Or is
the belief that someone laughing at you is an attack
completely an ingorance-based phenomenon?

2. Is having an ellipsis hurled at you an attack?

However, the two are not mutually exclusive, of course.
It's entirely possible to perceive that one is being
attacked and to shrug off the attack, or even to
perceive that the attack has merit and the laughter
is justified.

But that doesn't somehow make the laughter any less of
an attack. To maintain otherwise is, as I said,
hypocrisy.

Sorry, but in my book to perceive being laughed at
as an attack is to reveal how pitifully lost one is
in the self and how attached one is to staying lost.
On the other hand, to be able to either shrug off
being laughed at or to actually be able to laugh
along with the laughers is a sign of being somewhat
evolved. Thank you for clarifying which camp you
fall into.

Laughing *at* (as opposed to *with*) a person is, of
course, an attack. To pretend otherwise is hypocrisy.

This is like one of those slap-your-forehead realization
moments in which you "get" something that has eluded you
for years, something that explains a recurring phenomenon
you never fully understood.

Judy really can't tell the difference between being
laughed at and being attacked. No WONDER she acts the
way she does.
