Beautifully stated - I agree completely with how you explain your experience. The Wintergrass festival is indoors (Hyatt hotel) and the sound system is fabulous. Sarah is an exception for me in how she translates live to recording, but many of the recordings don't do true justice to the multi-dimensional, multi-layered aspects of the bands and sounds that come across in person. I kind of gave up. Mandolin isn't my favorite instrument - but having said that, I heard some amazing solos this year on mandolin and banjo and my favorite, which is the guitar. Not sure where you live, but if you're ever in Seattle in February - check this festival out. It will give you chills down your spine. Not sure what it is - too fast, overall sound is too high-pitched for me, fiddles come across as squeaky sometimes - I can't relax into it. Ha. Tracey Thorn. Easy...is this her? Wintergrass has bands from across the country that come. This year they mixed it up - a lot of blues influence, jazz, west african, and other genres mixing in with the traditional bluegrass sound. It's all about the music...jams going on all day and night for four days. Workshops for youth.
