tad, I am so sorry about Leo. Orange cats seem to usually be amazing. My Simon surely was. And he did not mind going to the vet for treatments either, and in fact did not mind being in the hospital that much. He only started to mind when some idiot couldn't get a catheter in and stuck him
if vets are like human doctors, they get very little pharmaceutical education, and learn much of what they do know from the manufacturer's detail personnel--for human meds, pharmacists are generally much more knowledgeable about what drugs actually do. i don't know, tho, how much they'd know about
Hi Nina
When you say DEX is that DEXAMETHASONE ??
Leo got only one shot.. I asked about getting another
but she was hesitant because of his ammune system...
But now it doesn't make any difference...
How much is Spencer getting

Hi Tad,
Yes, Dexamethasone. Spencer has been getting daily injections of .4cc,
(that's 4/10 of a cc). That amount was prescribed when he weighed about
13 lbs. and he was at death's door. The experience you describe for
your boy with the fevers is what I've been praying for with Spencer.
I forgot to mention that my Internist also commented on the Elspar...
She said that it is a good treatment; it's not considered chemo. Its
effects lasts for approx 3 days and is used to get patients into
remission quickly, but does not hold. She said even if I could afford
it, it can't be

I don't know what else she thinks it could be. No one has said that
there is definitely a mass. They keep saying things like, I think I
felt a mass, that could be a mass on the xray, but not, Yep, that's a
mass all right! I think she's prescribing the steroid shots because I
asked her to.
Nina,
That information is not accurate, this is not what I've heard from
people who use it, I think you should ask her to consult with an
oncologist, what is her experience with cancer, is she oncologist??
Elspar is used in several treatment protocols, it is also used as a
rescue
praying that even if
it has not reduced, it has not grown.
Continued good luck to Spencer.

Yes, it's definitely chemo, though it affects only lymphoma cells so is not harsh at all. And in chemo protocols the next drug is not given until a week after the Elspar, so the effects must be expected to last at least a week at a time.
Plus, I would assume that, if the Elspar could shrink
If there is an oncologist within your reach, I think I would try to see him or her.

Wow, that is a really low dose of dex. When I have given dex shots, I have given 1 whole cc at a time, or 1/2 cc mixed with 1/2 cc depomedrol. And none of my cats weighed more than 9 or 10 pounds at the time, some as little as 6. But I was not giving it every day long-term, either, just for one
Did somebody mention frustrated ???
My vet is a country vet.. with many years of experience
with milk cows but is willing to study up on ideas that I
have picked up on the internet... He has just taken on a
new vet or maybe she is an intern and she has been working
with my cats.. She does believe
