RE: Felvtalk Digest, Vol 33, Issue 33
Hi Susan-My name is Kenzie and I would like more information on Transfer Factor if you have more...I have a male kitten who is FELV positive and is having a hard time. We had a two week bout of no appetite, severe weight loss, puking and diarrahea. He has since begun eating again and drinking but has no energy and I am wondering if this transfer factor would help him. I am hoping he is not going through some sort of failure like heart or kidney but do not see any signs of either besides his absent of playing. He lays on the couch all day until I get home and then will follow me and lay near wherever I am at the moment. He has fevers on and off. I am giving him Mega C Plus also but I would really like to do as much as I can for him. Do you think this would help him? Is there anyway to purchase a couple bottles at a time? How much does it run? I don't have money to purchase a huge case of it and we don't have any holistic vets here. I have had a hard time finding a vet that would even do anything with my kitties. The general idea in our town it to put them to sleep if they are positive. Our vet now does as much as he can because he understand they may have a good chance and I am willing to try but he has a very basic office. Any help or ideas or information from anyone is appreciated!!Thanks! Autumn has finally recovered and is no longer in pain. Her vets keep pushing me to give her vaccinations, but shortly after she has them she gets sick! I don't think they are using dead vaccines, which is recommended for FELV+. I don't understand why most vets don't do more to educate themselves about this disease. Hopefully the Feline Omega Interferon becomes FDA approved and be readily available. Where do most people get their Transfer Factor Plus? We are looking for a specialist for Autumn, but they are hard to find in our area. Thank you again. She is a healthy, happy 15 week old. Cute as a button and highly rambunctious! She used to sleep on the floor, but now she sleeps in the bed curled up against my neck and when she sleeps deeply her little tongue sticks out. So cute! ~Susan A. -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... RE: Felvtalk Digest, Vol 33, Issue 33
Hi Kenzie, Transfer Factor is supposed to boost, enhance and educate the immune system. There are a number of different formulas available. One formula is feline-specific, and contains the basic Transfer Factor component along with a wide variety of nutrients. There are several human formulas that are used by some to treat dogs and cats. The best of these would seem to be Transfer Factor Plus Tri-Factor. It includes the Transfer Factor component along with a number of stimulants and enhancers for the immune system (as opposed to the vitamins and other nutrients that the feline formula contains). You can find lots of info, including prices, from the Transfer Factor site: http://www.4life.com While TF seems to help in some cases, I don't know that I've necessarily seen any serious benefit in giving it to my FeLV+ cat. Still, I plan to continue, though I'll probably use the feline formula instead of the human formula that she's been getting. My guess is that it provides most of the same benefits, and I like that it contains a number of vitamins. I think you should also look into Liquid DMG: http://www.vetriscience.com/vetri-dmg-tablets-liquid.php You might also bring some of the info that can be found on this group's pages regarding ImmunoRegulin and interferon to your vet. While both of these medications require prescriptions, they aren't too expensive, and I think your vet should be able to obtain them. I hope your cat's symptoms will dissipate. Please come back with any questions you might have. Kenzie: I don't know about Transfer Factor, but had something to contribute about Holistic Vets. I don't think the lack of any in your area is a complete bar. My Fel Leuk cat Monkee went to a Holistic Vet in the last weeks of his life because I was desperate. I now realize that we should have been doing that all along, but my dad was a vet, so I just didn't know about some of the newer forms of treatment. My Holistic Vet, Dr. Susan Maier in Simpsonville, Kentucky, was great. I really think her positive attitude and treatments eased Monkee's pain and boosted his spirits for 2 extra weeks. Dr. Maier's treatments compliment and support traditional vet medicine (and she is a trained, regular vet too). So even if you are happy with your vet now, you can still work with a Holistic vet because they are not exclusive of each other. Dr. Maier's office was a far drive for me and my sick cat, so we only went there twice. Everything else we did over the phone and email-- yes, a vet that emails! If I needed to add another homeopathic med, she would tell me where to get it (usually natural health food stores- if you don't have those those, again, there's the internet), or she can mix up meds and mail them to you. I know she will do consults over the phone and email if you fax her the cat's medical records. You can request a consult from her webpage. If I were you, I would honestly contact her office and tell her your situation, and see if she would be amenable to helping you out over the distance by doing a phone consult, etc. I think it's important to realize that just because you may not yet have a Holistic Vet in your area, you are not out of luck. In this age of technology, if you have a willing holistic vet who uses that technology, I think it's worth it. She's also very Fel Leuk oriented- up on the latest research, she's had Fel Leuks herself, she knows all about supplements and will give you diet advice, and she has remarked to me about the vets who recommend putting them to sleep-- that they are in the dark ages- which is a good sign! Here's her website: http://www.horizonvetserv.com/ I hope you try her. You can tell her I passed her name on to you. -Caroline From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: RE: Felvtalk Digest, Vol 33, Issue 33Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2007 12:10:46 -0500 Hi Susan-My name is Kenzie and I would like more information on Transfer Factor if you have more...I have a male kitten who is FELV positive and is having a hard time. Kitten with an enlarged heart...
Dear friends, My cat kitty with Felv is doing fine at the moment. But I was wondering if anyone could give me any information on a kitten with an enlarged heart, also with some fluid around it. In the beginning of September my daughter rescued three little kittens all girls, my new little granfurbabies. One is now 22 weeks and the other two are now 16 weeks (these two are sisters). My daughter noticed one of the little sisters (Leia) was making a funny sound periodically so she took her to the vet today and he x-rayed her and said she had fluid around her heart and that the heart was also enlarged. The vet said there is no murmur and as far as he was concerned there does not seem to be any blockage. He said her heart seems to be working over time this is why it is enlarged, he told my daughter not to worry unless the little kitten opens her mouth and starts to pant then she should bring Leia back. Would anyone have any kind of info on this. I feel (and I could be wrong) that there may be something else that could be done. The vet said Leia is to young to be giving any kind of Meds . I don't want my daughter's heart (or mine ) to be broken if he is wrong. The vet told my daughter not to worry that Leia could grow out of this. Enlarged heart with fluid around it...I do feel worried. Any info would be appreciated. Thank You Liz. _ R U Ready for Windows Live Messenger Beta 8.5? From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: Kitten with an enlarged heart... Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2007 19:52:57 -0600 My best advice is to keep Leia's life as stress-free as possible. THAT should slow down her heart rate. This may not be what your kitten hasmy elder cat Keisha had fluid around her heart. It was congestive heart failure. Hers manifested in respiratory distress. It can be treated but not cured. Keisha was over 11 when diagnosed. I took her in the day after her purr sounded like it was echoing inside her and I heard a clicking noise when I put my head to her chest. She was also eating less and seemed to be in pain when moving her rear legs. An xray revealed fluid around her lungs. Keisha was also asthmatic and horribly allergic to many things. We also found a lung mass on her xray. It was cancer.so, different from your kitten. Lucy has a valentine shaped heart. We discovered this with a chest xray as part of an annual check up. She had no symptoms. Her diagnosis is HCM and I forget what the H stands for. The rest is: cardiomyopathy. She is almost 10. She recently started medication to slow down her very fast heart rate (220 beats per minute). It is working great (now 120 beats per minute) and she is the happiest she's been for a long time. Risk: she could go into congestive heart failure. We have to keep her stress level low. We may be able to discontinue her meds at some point. A friend's cat 2 year old cat was diagnosed with a heart murmur. She was on heart medicine for awhile and is doing great without it now. The main thing with her is she needs to be monitored if under anesthesia and stress kept to a minimum. My sister's cat also has a heart problem and is taking the same med Lucy is. He is doing fine. He's 12 or older. You could ask for or find a specialist. A cardiologist or an internal medicine specialist ...if you want to get a second opinion. Lucy goes to an internal med doctor. She prescribed her meds in treat form. Lucy eats them like a treat. Easy. I try not to worry but to get informed. I think my cats sense my worry.I also think I can invite the very thing I dread if I give it too much attention.
