The vet said his cancer on his kidney had grown huge

he was in pain and it was time to let him go...

It was so hard because he seemed to love life and

I know he missed Winky...He was only here for a few

Winky just went to sleep and didn't wake up...He was
 very anemic

 loosing weight...
We gave him special food and he was doing better and

 peeing outside his box

 his urine was
watery and we gave him something to make it a little

he was getting crystals build up... He seemed better
 for a while and
put a little weight back on but then he started to
 eat less again but he

 was cancer taking him away

I miss my supper friendly little orange kitty and I

Re: Bailey Update

2006-02-07 Thread Belinda Sauro
I will ask my vet today, i know he was checked way back on January
3rd and 11th, but not sure about recently. She said this may just be
part of the progression of this type of anemia, since she has not dealt
with it before she doesn't know what to expect, that's why she wants to
speak with Greg Ogilvie DVM, he is an oncologist and she mentored under
him when she was in school. She said cats (and people) with cancer get
a type of wasting called cachaxsia (I'm sure that isn't spelled right)
and that may be a part of how this anemia progresses. Dr Ogilvie should
be back in the country today so hopefully he will get back to her today
or tomorrow.

I gave Bailey his first dose of winstrol and he didn't have an adverse
reaction so that is good. Wendy you said yours was a shot, mine is a
capsule, did you get yours at a compounding pharmacy? Do you remember
the dose size it was?

Re: New to list...kittens with FeLV

2006-02-07 Thread Belinda Sauro

  Hi Karen,
Welcome, and thank you for caring about these little guys. If
possible I would keep them and even though at some point there may come
a time when they become actively sick and at that point you may have to
make some hard decisions, we all can only do what we can do, and as long
as that is done with love in your heart it is always the right thing. I
firmly believe that if these little bundles of joy could talk they would
rather live as long as they have especially since they are all healthy
and asymptomatic right now rather than be euthanized now and miss out on
however long they may have. It doesn't make any sense to euthanize
healthy animals and it is very possible they may live long fairly normal
lives.

My Bailey who is currently sick was positive at 5 months of age when he
found me and has not had any health problems until last year at the age
of 9 years which were teeth related, and now with anemia. He is 10 and
a hlf years old and has been healthy, happy and a complete joy for most
of that time and even his teeth weren't that big a deal, this anemia is
but we are doing everything we can to turn him around and pu the virus
back into remission. Bailey is my 4th positive, I lost 3 back in the
early 90's before much was known about it and I had no computer then,
and I wouldn't have missed having any of those furkids even though
losing them was so hard. They gave me years of joy, companionship and
memories I can look back on that are priceless. I wouldn't give that up
for anything.

There are many ways to boost their immune system that isn't horribly
expensive and that alone can make a big difference in the quality and
quantity of their lives. Mega C plus is suppose to be very good for
boosting and even reversing the positive status. I spoke with a women
who has 10 cats that as youngsters tested positive, she put all of them
on the Mega C plus and all of them today are negative, ALL of them. She
said the main thing with the Mega C plus is it takes as long to convert
them to negative as they have been positive. So if they have been
positive for 1 year, it will take a year to convert them to negative. I
used this on Bailey, knowing converting him was not going to happen he
is after all 10 years old and has been psotive that long, but it is a
very good immune system booster also so for that I got it for him.
Unfortunetly this anemia had already taken hold and I had to stop giving
it to him because the treatment for this type of anemia is to suppress
his immune system. I do give it to my other cats who are all negative
to keep them healthy and strong. There is interferon, some poeple have
had success with that, Lysine, COQ-10, Salmon oil, and most importantly
a good diet, try to feed the best cat food you can afford. Foods
without alot of chemicals and preservatives in it. They do cost more
initially but in the long run they will save you money in vet visits.

Keeping these guys may mean that possibly in the future you may be
looking at getting your heart broken as they succomb to this horrible
disease, but for me anyway the love and joy they give you for the time
you do have together is well worth any sadness later. They definately
have a specialness about them!!

Hi guys,

I took Julie to the vet this past Friday because she
was having pain going to the bathroom the Sunday
before and had a little blood around her genitals. I
couldn't get her to the vet until Friday so I gave her
Baytril I had left over from Cricket starting on
Sunday, which wiped out whatever bacterial infection
she might have had, and all her renal functions seemed
to be back to normal by Friday. But I took her in
anyway just to be sure, and they ran a urinalysis and
total blood/labwork on her. Saturday the vet called
me and said her results showed hypertension (she got a
17 on her T4 results, normal is between .4 and 5.2)
and he prescribed 10 mg of Tapazole/Methimazole daily.
I have to bring her in in two weeks for further blood
work to see how the drugs are helping her thyroid.
Does anyone here have any experience with
hyperthyroidism in their kitty, and what did you do
about it? What does T4 measure? Did your kitty pass
away from the hyperthyroidism? Did the drugs reverse
the heart murmur? What diet would be good for a kitty
with hyperthyroidism? Any advice is greatly
appreciated!

I've heard that long term use of tapazole can cause anemia.

I think hyperthyroidism is very common in older cats. They go on
tapazolejust like humans and biggest problem is the once or twice a
 day pill! Had
one cat who lived to early twenties after years of tapazole...There
 were no
restrictions on diet or anything. She had lost some weight and was
doingthe midnight howling thing went I brought her in and she
 snapped right back
 after starting tapazole.

 :)

  Hi Karen,
Welcome, and thank you for caring about these little guys. If possible I
would keep them and even though at some point there may come a time when
they become actively sick and at that point you may have to make some hard
decisions, we all can only do what we can do, and as long as that is done
with love in your heart it is always the right thing. I firmly believe
that if these little bundles of joy could talk they would rather live as
long as they have especially since they are all healthy and asymptomatic
right now rather than be euthanized now and miss out on however long they
may have. It doesn't make any sense to euthanize healthy animals and it
is very possible they may live long fairly normal lives.

My Bailey who is currently sick was positive at 5 months of age when he
found me and has not had any health problems until last year at the age of
9 years which were teeth related, and now with anemia. He is 10 and a hlf
years old and has been healthy, happy and a complete joy for most of that
time and even his teeth weren't that big a deal, this anemia is but we are
doing everything we can to turn him around and pu the virus back into
remission. Bailey is my 4th positive, I lost 3 back in the early 90's
before much was known about it and I had no computer then, and I wouldn't
have missed having any of those furkids even though losing them was so
hard. They gave me years of joy, companionship and memories I can look
back on that are priceless. I wouldn't give that up for anything.

There are many ways to boost their immune system that isn't horribly
expensive and that alone can make a big difference in the quality and
quantity of their lives. Mega C plus is suppose to be very good for
boosting and even reversing the positive status. I spoke with a women who
has 10 cats that as youngsters tested positive, she put all of them on the
Mega C plus and all of them today are negative, ALL of them. She said the
main thing with the Mega C plus is it takes as long to convert them to
negative as they have been positive. So if they have been positive for 1
year, it will take a year to convert them to negative. I used this on
Bailey, knowing converting him was not going to happen he is after all 10
years old and has been psotive that long, but it is a very good immune
system booster also so for that I got it for him. Unfortunetly this
anemia had already taken hold and I had to stop giving it to him because
the treatment for this type of anemia is to suppress his immune system. I
do give it to my other cats who are all negative to keep them healthy and
strong. There is interferon, some poeple have had success with that,
Lysine, COQ-10, Salmon oil, and most importantly a good diet, try to feed
the best cat food you can afford. Foods without alot of chemicals and
preservatives in it. They do cost more initially but in the long run
they will save you money in vet visits.

Keeping these guys may mean that possibly in the future you may be looking
at getting your heart broken as they succomb to this horrible disease, but
for me anyway the love and joy they give you for the time you do have
together is well worth any sadness later. They definately have a
specialness about them!!

Hi Wendy,
How old is Julie? I've never had any cats with thyroid problems, so I

used with younger cats. Maybe that's what Marylyn is talking about? I
wish I could remember more, but the folks on whatever list you join

RE: New to list...kittens with FeLV

2006-02-07 Thread catatonya
I don't know that I would test everyone right away. It depends on what you plan to do. If you can test everyone and then keep the negatives separate for 90 days (isn't it??) then retest the negatives again and if they're negative still then you could find them a home? If you can do all of that I would retest now. That's a lot of money though, plus time spent separating, then finding homes for the (by then) adult negatives. If you are thinking of keeping all of them I would find out if they were individually tested and I would only test the ones that had not been tested. If they have all been tested I would wait and retest again in 90 days and not waste the money doing it again now.If you are working with a humane society or other organization they SHOULD test these kittens for you at least at cost. Last I recall a combo. test might have been around
$15 and just felv even less. When this happened to me a shelter employee who was a friend came to my house with the tests and we drew blood and tested right there. A vet will charge you more like $40 per test.As far as costs in the future, I really wouldn't worry about that right now. "Typically" with felv, once cats get sick they go downhill pretty fast. Yes, you can spend a fortune and it 'might' help. But in general, when and even IF the felv ever really kicks in there is not a lot you can do.I know you have lots of questions. I can just tell you that everyone goes through the shock and panic that you are going through right now when they first find out. It WILL work itself out. This list will be a great help to you.tonyaChris [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I would DITTO about the testing. I've been in your place, confused, grief stricken, hopeful, desperate... I too learned about felv through rescuing a litter of kittens. Let me first say, after all the
heartache, all the uncertainty, it was an experience I wouldn't trade for the world. Knowing and loving my sweet little Angels was a Godsend, not a curse. How do you know ALL the kittens are pos? Sometimes rescue groups and organizations will test only one, or two and then figure the whole group has to be pos. It's not necessarily so. Tim, one of the 6 kittens I found at 2 1/2 weeks old, (almost certainly got it from his mom), tested neg, another, Lucky, who has never been tested, has never been sick a day in his life, (they are now close to 2 1/2 yrs old). Even being pos is not an automatic death sentence, (even though many vets still seem to think so). Don't despair, there are many things you can do to help prolong their lives and keep them happy and healthy, many things that don't take a great deal of money. Did the shelter tell you that they wouldn't pay for the spay/neuters because of their status? Be careful about
the vaccines. Don't have them vaccinated at the same time they are neutered. Sometimes stressful events, like neuter/vac can cause their immune system to falter, you want to stretch out these things and only when they seem perfectly healthy. There has been a great deal of discussion on the list about vaccines, (you can check the archives on just about anything). Personally, I never vac against rabies when I can help it, there's certainly no reason to vac against felv, (although I do remember some controversial dialog about that). See if you can vac with single strain shots, rather than combos. You need to find yourself a vet that is friendly to and/or familiar with felv if you can. I'd start looking for a board certified Internist. You have to remember that kitties don't get sick from felv itself, they get sick because their immune response is poor and diseases that wouldn't necessarily take hold in a neg cat may wreak havoc with
them. Everyone on this list has come to know that it's quality, not quantity of life that matters. There's something very special about felv pos kitties. We've discussed it many times. I'm sorry you had the need to find us, but so glad you did. The folks here are very caring and knowledgeable, you'll find information and support to help you through whatever you have to face. I'm so glad you didn't listen to the folks at the shelter! Thank you for following your heart and giving these guys a chance at life and love. The most important things you can do is create as stress free environment as possible, feed good quality food and immune

Hi Karen,
So sorry you are going through this kind of crap with the humane society. Just make me sick to my stomach.
It sounds to me if they can make profit off the kittens or cats that's hunky dory. But when need something done like medical treatment they tend to give the cold shoulder and discard animals.
They need to remember of how they became about in the animal world.
Do you have any statements from the Vets and bank for the treatments that you have paid for any of the animals?
If so, remind them of it that you can pursue it further with an attorney.
You need to ramble on this don't apologize for venting. Years ago, I went through the same thing told them where to get off and got my money back.
Today they are no longer in businessYAHOO!!!

Hey Barbara,
I'm glad to hear your kitties, dogs and sister are doing well, (I like
the way your sister is mentioned after the dog!). That's nice that you
were able to adopt a second dog and that they get along so well. I
sure hope those pos black babies find a home soon, prayers for a
forever home coming their way soon. I can't remember exactly when you
left the list, but I've lost my sweet Angels Jazz and Grace. Their
littermates, Timothy, (lives with me), and Lucky are still going strong
at 2 1/2 yrs. A few more rescues have showed up at my door, I'm up to
7 cats and 6 dogs! It's crowded and hectic around here! Certainly you
are not going to get a shudder out of me!

So glad to see you're back,
Nina

Hello hello! I've been away so long.
(and probably most of you are scratching your heads and thinking, who
is this anyway??? ha!)
Been dealing with my d*g's cancer
and he's hanging in there. no new lumps yet. Even adopted a 2nd older
d*g as companion last Oct. and during the day they sleep next to each
other but at night, she takes the couch and he still pushes my husband
off our bed.then the cats curl up next to the dog. My sister's cancer
has not returned either so we're very happy about that.

My Mr. Bean is still negative though
he only has one tooth left. My other positive Clancy unfortunately
still tested positive so not able to start up fostering again for local
shelter. So I've been doing my bit for rescuing online.
recently contacted me concerning two black positives they have in
foster care in Georgia that need a home or safe haven. This is an
amazing group along with www.savingshelterpets.com
that work online to rescue cats from high kill pounds. There is one
black female approx 1 yr old and a male approx 2 yrs old. both very
friendly but they are in cages at foster care and their care is
draining the group's pocketbook and a decision will have to be made
soon.

  Both kitties are in temporary
boarding in Griffin, GA; they are rescues from the high kill gas
shelter at Spalding County, GA. SavetheKitties will arrange/provide
transport to foster/adopt location. Both have had distemper and rabies
vaccinations as well as initial de-worming; SavetheKitties will do
distemper booster. In their combo testing, both tested positive for
Felv. Neither has been spayed/neutered at this time, however,
SavetheKitties will either provide spay/neuter prior to transport or
fund after transport.

I have posted their ads on the
adoption page along with photos. I would gladly help out if anyone can
take these two in.

I've missed the daily emails from
this group and crying and laughing along with you all. Most of all,
I've missed knowing there are others out there who would not shudder
when I say, "oh I have 7 cats and 2 dogs."

Wendy,I have a little experience with it and will be glad to talk to you about it. there is also an excellent yahoo group for people with hyperthyroid cats. I would strongly recommend you join it for more info.Bonnie has been dealing with this as well. I'm not sure if she joined the yahoo group for it or not. Both of my cats with hyper t lived a number of years, and died of related causes (we think). One had liver problems and one had a rare kidney infection. I don't think either of their cases was what is normally expected with hyper-t though.I have to get through some more emails, but I'll try to email you more tomorrow.tonyawendy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi guys,I took Julie to the vet this past Friday because shewas having pain going to the bathroom the Sundaybefore and had a little blood around her genitals. Here is the link to join the yahoo list for your kitty. This is a great group with lots of information.

I lost my kitty Ling awhile ago to Hyper-Thyroid. By the time I got him it was too late for the treatment. He was a rescue Siamese kitty. Think he was 16-20 years old. He had a rough life out on the streets after his owner died. He was willed to me but after a year on the streets. The new family realized he was suppose to come to me when the original owner died. They didn't want him because of his conditions and age. Such Idiots!

Well I have a friend whose very
sleepyhead, big cat started doing the same thing a few months ago. When she
took him to vet, sure enough it was his thryroid. She now shares the joys of
morning and evening pilling!

Is the howling a symptom of hyperthyroidism? Is so,
that makes sense, as Julie has been doing that for a
couple of years.

 Hi guys,

I took Julie to the vet this past Friday because she
was having pain going to the bathroom the Sunday
before and had a little blood around her genitals.
 I
couldn't get her to the vet until Friday so I gave
 her
Baytril I had left over from Cricket starting on
Sunday, which wiped out whatever bacterial infection
she might have had, and all her renal functions
 seemed
to be back to normal by Friday. But I took her in
anyway just to be sure, and they ran a urinalysis

total blood/labwork on her. Saturday the vet called
me and said her results showed hypertension (she got
 a
17 on her T4 results, normal is between .4 and 5.2)
and he prescribed 10 mg of Tapazole/Methimazole
 daily.
I have to bring her in in two weeks for further
 blood
work to see how the drugs are helping her thyroid.
Does anyone here have any experience with
hyperthyroidism in their kitty, and what did you do
about it? What does T4 measure? Did your kitty
 pass
away from the hyperthyroidism? Did the drugs
 reverse
the heart murmur? What diet would be good for a
