Re: Pekoe's Latest Tabbs Spain

2006-03-10 Thread Sandra

Hi Marlene, My name is Sandra, and I am
treating my boy Tabbs on Virbagen Omega Interferon the firstbatch cost me
405 euros, but it hasgone up, and the second cost me 500 euros, so that
hurts, but I have not hand any side affects, Tabbs has been on it for over 4
weeks now, the first batch which was 5 vials of 10mu, and we treated him every
other day injections only, so the batch only gave me ten injections, as we where
giving him 1/2 a bottle every other day.
The new batch we are giving every day, one day by mouth and one day
injection. as my vet is unsure if giving it by mouth is correct. would be very
interested to hear if giving by mouth with the Virbagen Omega Interferon
is OK, as I hate doing the injections
I am waiting blood test today to see how heis doing, and also
awaiting to acquire the epogen, whichcausing problems on getting, I
ordered it over ten days ago and am waiting for the hospital to ring me, when it
arrives, but wonder if they are giving me the run around.

Good luck and hope things improve for you both

I would be grateful if every one could comment on the
dosing of Virbagen Omega Interferon by mouth, I know the human interferon
is given by mouth.

But we have just done another blood test today, and I am hoping for a
improvement on his readings, He is still eating and holding his own, I am
so afraid to get my hopes up, but he is not getting any worst dare I say.
and ,I am hoping that the Interferon is working, the second batch cost me
500 euros, so I am hoping that when I have to order a 3rd batch that I
will be able to cut down the amount of dosing that he is on. Which is
every day at 0.25 my vet is has suggested inject every other day and by
mouth each day in between, because we are unsure if the Interferon omega
works the same as the one that you use, comments please.
I have managed to get the L-lysine from the Uk that arrived yesterday,
Keep your fingers crossed for me and Tabbs that just may be we are making

A little bit of good news today, Tabbs HCT has
gone up from 11 to 14.3, and every thing else on his readings are good except
his liver, So will have to look into this, but unhappy about more

any comments welcome on the treatment that he
is on at the moment, I am still trying to get the
epogen.

below is the note from my
vet.

Hello Sandra: I am so happy to tell you that Tabs
ht is 14%!!!
Last time was 11 % and a non regenerative anemia.
Now is a little regenerative.
So, now I suggest to follow in this
way:
-Dacortin 5mg: 1 tablet / day
-Interferon omega: 1/4 bottle every day.(2.5
UI)
-Vitamins and rest of the medication: the same
like before, also stomorgyl

Sandra - Virbagen Omega Dosage

2006-03-10 Thread Marlene Chornie

Hi Sandra,

The only information I have regarding the dosage to give
is what my vet was able to find out from the Virbagen Omega website:

Cats: The reconstituted product should be injected subcutaneously
once daily for 5 consecutive days. The dose is 1 MU/kg bodyweight.
Three separate 5-day treatments must be performed at Day 0, Day 14 and Day
60.

 I haven't heard/read anywhere about giving it
orally. I'm pretty sure there are a couple of list members in the U.S. who
have used it and perhaps they will tell you what dose they used.

Stinky made it through the night. I called this
morning and she was standing up in the cage.
Hopefully she will be able to come home today. The
only thing I found out about the surgery was that her
small intestine looked o.k. Her large intestine had
some purple spots on it. I don't know what that
means. The lympnode looked like it was a little
enlarged. That worries me. It will probably be next
week before I know anything. Thank all of you for
your advice and prayers.

Hi Sandra,

I do confirm the dosage given by Marlene's vet: 1 MU/kg is the same
dose that we used here in Italy (where Virbagen Omega is commonly
found at any vet pharmacy), with the difference that we did not need
to repeat the treatment at day 14 and 60 because Micia did great
immediately (literally thrived) right after the first cycle.

nothing too serious. I hope you and Stinky have a

I called the vet and Stinky made it through the
surgery and she is awake. They took biopsies of small
intestine, large intestine and lympnode to send off.
So it will probably be a week before I know anything.
They are giving her fluids through an IV.
Hopefully she will do O.K. tonight.

Subject: Lucy is bored
To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org

Lucy has been going nuts with boredom since Ginger died, and I am
 not sure
what to do for her. This happened when Ginger was with my mom for
 a month
too. Although Lucy always acted like she did not like Ginger,
 Ginger definitely
kept her occupied and entertained. When Ginger was at my mom's,
 Lucy figured
out how to get out of the cat fence-in, after 2 years of never even
 trying
to, and got out of the yard constantly (at our old house). Here,
 since Ginger
died, she runs around trying to play with things (but unable to
 entertain
herself as well as Ginger did) and meowing-- last night she meowed
 and meowed
until I got out of bed and went and played with her, and when I
 tried to go back
to bed she did it again. Gray finally went in the other room and
 slept there
to be near her (our negative, Quincy, lives in our bedroom so she
 can't come
in). We have cat trees, catnip, etc. We both work, though we are
 each home a
couple days a week. But even when we are home she seems bored.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Tonight I am here without Gray
 and am torn
between Quincy, who was totally alone all day while I was at work,
 and Lucy,
who is going nuts. I keep going back and forth between them, but
 want to go
to bed. I worry about the stress of boredom on Lucy, as she is
 positive.

Lucy does have Patches, another positive, but does not seem at all
 satisfied
with her company. The only time they interact is when they fight. I
 have
feliway diffusers and spray and use both.

 Thanks for any suggestions,
 Michelle

That is the best news! Sorry if I missed an email
somewhere-- I get so many emails that I often do. I am so glad to hear the

actually just started having some loose stool yesterday and today and I

and metronidazole took care of it, so I am trying that. But I understand
assuming the worst. Much better to be happy when things turn out good then

Michelle,
I'm hoping to find a homeopathic that helps with Gypsy's "neediness",
(she'll only eat while I'm petting her). I'll pass on suggestions when
I get them. How old is Quincy? Has he had his shots? Is there any
chance you might change your mind and start mixing them? I don't know
what's more stressful to you, keeping them segregated under these
circumstances, or the thought of mixing them. I'm guessing that mixing
them would ease Lucy's frustrations. Unless you don't think that
Quincy and the pos will get along? Everyone always told me not to
allow my pos access to my back yard because of the fear of them
contracting something from the ferals that pass through at night. I
knew there was a danger, who knows, it may have even hastened their
deaths, but I'll never be sorry that I gave them the fullest, happiest
life while they were here that I could. It's at least one regret that
I don't have. I'm sure I'd be singing a different tune if one of my
negs came up pos because of mixing, but no one ever did.

Sandra,
The research and investigating that we did when I was using Interferon
Omega indicated that it did not work orally.  If you want to give it
orally as well as subq, I would use the Interferon A for the oral
administration.  I too wanted to hear that giving the Omega would work
orally, alas, I don't think it's the case.  As far as I know there
shouldn't be a problem with mixing the two interferons, but I don't
have any verification of that.  I would just give the injections for
the protocol you and your vet have decided on and then follow them with
the IA later, if you feel it is warranted.  One other thing, the 7 days
on, 7 days off for the human interferon, is used when you plan on
keeping them on it indefinitely, (in the hopes that they won't build
immunity to it, unlike the feline interferon that it is believed does
not build immunities).  I always gave my guys IA, whenever they're
symptoms called for it, (upping the dose if it seemed called for), and
then when they were asymptomatic again, I'd stop.

I'm pulling for you and your boy Tabbs,
Nina

and I am treating my boy Tabbs on Virbagen Omega Interferon the first batch cost
me 405 euros, but it has gone up, and the second cost me 500 euros, so
that hurts, but I have not hand any side affects, Tabbs has been on it
for over 4 weeks now, the first batch which was 5 vials of 10mu, and we
treated him every other day injections only, so the batch only gave me
ten injections, as we where giving him 1/2 a bottle every other day.
The new batch we are giving every day, one day by mouth and one
day injection. as my vet is unsure if giving it by mouth is correct.
would be very interested to hear if giving by mouth with the  Virbagen
Omega Interferon is OK, as I hate doing the injections
I am waiting blood test today to see how he is doing, and also
awaiting to acquire the epogen, which causing problems on getting, I
ordered it over ten days ago and am waiting for the hospital to ring
me, when it arrives, but wonder if they are giving me the run around.

Good luck and hope things improve for you both

I would be grateful if every  one   could comment on the dosing

Re: Sandra - Virbagen Omega Dosage

2006-03-10 Thread Nina

Paolo,
Did you ever look into giving it orally? I just wrote to Sandra about
my findings indicating that it doesn't work that way.

Sandra and Marlene,
My experience with Grace and Jazz on IO, was that I would see
significant improvement after the first three days on it. The first
time I gave it to them, it was once a day for 5 days (1MU/kg), then
every other day for 7 doses (1MU per cat). The second protocol I used
was 1MU a day for 5 days, wait 2-3 weeks, 1MU per cat, wait 2-3 weeks
and then again 1MU per cat. After that I would give it to them for 5
days and only repeat it if they're symptoms returned. Is this making
sense to you?

Nina

Paolo wrote:

Re: Sandra - Virbagen Omega Dosage

2006-03-10 Thread Marlene Chornie

Some more information I have:

It is recommended to test blood parameters 14 days after
the beginning of treatment, on Day 14. If hematocrit (PCV) and/or RBC
count are within physiological ranges, there is a high probability for the cat
to be a "good responder" to interferon therapy. In this case, it is
recommended to administer the 2nd series of 5 injections on Day 14. If
hematological results are not satisfying on Day 14, the cat might be refractory
to interferon therapy and treatment should be discussed.

Treatment of cats infected with FelV and/or FIV with
clinical symptoms. Expected benefits can be numerous. A quick
improvement of quality of life can be observed as early as the first days after
the beginning of administration (eg. general behaviour, appetite,
grooming). Quality of life can be improved whatever the virus responsible
for the disease (FIV or FelV or both viruses). Anemia can be improved in
cats which are anemic at the start of treatment (it has been shown significant
as early as 2 weeks after the start of treatment in a field study).

Thanks Marlene, I hadn't heard about testing blood parameters before.
Apparently my girls were "good responders", since they felt so much
healthier by the third day of use.  When you say "refractory to
interferon", does that mean that they simply do not respond, or has it
been found to be detrimental in some way to some cats?  I've never
heard of adverse reactions to the use of IO, but the darn stuff isn't
even approved in this country yet.

To Nina - Virbagen Omega

2006-03-10 Thread Paolo
Nina,

given orally, Virbagen Omega would work exactly like the human interferon
that so many people on the list administer orally... considered the cost
and the difficulties to get Feline Interferon in the USA, there is simply
no reason for doing so! The protocol (1MU/kg for 5 consecutive days) was
taken from a clinical double-blind trial carried on by Mahl, Maynard
et al. It was tested under strictly controlled conditions, and it did
work. I do not mean in any way that, since Micia did great (and I mean
really G-R-E-A-T!) after a single cycle, others may not need the cycles
at days 14 and 60: that was simply my personal experience. But the dose
of 1MU/kg is absolutely right. The other thing, Nina, if you remember my
past messages about this, is that differently from human interferon,
Virbagen Omega CANNOT be stored in the refrigerator once reconstituted,
because it does not contain any preservative: it must be used immediately,
if you try to save if for the day after, you spoil it of its power.

Re: To Nina - Virbagen Omega

2006-03-10 Thread Nina

Hi Paolo,
My vet did finally get to speak to someone at the manufacture's who told
her that it was recommended to use it directly after reconstitution
because of fears of contamination, not because it would lose it's
effectiveness. I did end up using it in this way, making sure to cover
the top of the bottle with a plastic wrapped alcohol soaked pad. I
didn't have much choice given the cost and length it took to get the
stuff. I always used a fresh needle whenever puncturing the vial top.

If you remember, Grace also did great after the first administration,
but then she relapsed later. Sadly, it wasn't the cure I'd hoped for,
but it did help her fight off illness for a long time. Perhaps if we
had been able to give it to her sooner... Who knows.

to play with things (but unable to entertain herself as well as Ginger did) and
meowing-- last night she meowed and meowed until I got out of bed and went and
played with her, and when I tried to go back to bed she did it again. Gray
finally went in the other room and slept there to be near her (our negative, Quincy, lives in our
bedroom so she can't come in). We have cat trees, catnip, etc. We both work,
though we are each home a couple days a week. But even when we are home she
seems bored.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Tonight
I am here without Gray and am torn between Quincy, who was totally alone all
day while I was at work, and Lucy, who is going nuts. I keep going back and
forth between them, but want to go to bed. I worry about the stress of
boredom on Lucy, as she is positive.

Lucy does have Patches, another positive,
but does not seem at all satisfied with her company. The only time they
interact is when they fight. I have feliway diffusers and spray and use both.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Michelle

I've made an appointment for an ultrasound, originally had it for Tuesday

looking for enlarged lymphnodes. If she see's anything that doesn't look

Lucy has Patches. She just thinks Patches is boring and also does not like
her. But she also acted like she thought Ginger was boring. She never really
played with Ginger, and seemed to dislike all the cats so much that the house
call vet who came here when I first moved in said she thought Lucy wanted to be
an only cat. Which is why I am surprised at how bored she is without
Ginger. I think that, though she was not crazy about Ginger, Ginger's energy and
antics kept her entertained and busy, and now she lacks that. Patches spends a
lot of time lying on the bed, whereas Ginger was always running around playing
with everything.

So no, I do not think of getting a kitten, and really do not think Lucy
would even like one. Gray would never put up with me adopting another cat,
anyway, especially a positive, after all the deaths we have been through in the
past few years.

I am hoping that my being home over the weekend will help her for a while,
anyway. And with warm weather coming she can spend more time outside in the
yard, which she likes and finds interesting.

Get a jar of Gerber's chicken baby food and dip the pill (cover it on all

Re: Lucy is bored

2006-03-10 Thread Lernermichelle

Actually, the reason that I have Quincy is that he hates other cats and
when my friend Faith rescued him from a shelter where he was going to be
euthanized because he was biting, she brought him home and he went hysterical
when he saw her other cats and bit a hole clear through one of her cat's
tails. She locked him in her bathroom for 2 months and periodically tried
to acclimate him but he just hated the other cats. Before being dropped
off at the shelter he lived with an older couple as an only cat and only indoors
from the age of 6 weeks, so he just never had exposure to other cats. I
took him because I knew I could keep him separate from my others-- it was easier
in our old house than here. Even so, I would bring my positives into the
main house space where he lived when they were sick, and separate them with
screens that I put up in the hallway and covered with blankets, and he would go
ballistic anytime he saw one of them (Simon, on his good days, found this
extremely entertaining, and would go to great lengths to get somewhere where
Quincy could see him a and then watch happily as Quincy had a hysterical fit.
When Lucy started climbing out of the yard in our last month there, after Ginger
came down and was with my mom, I would know when she got out because she would
walk to where Quincy could see her from a window and he would start screaming
like someone was trying to kill him.

So no, I don't really think it would lessen everyone's
stress to let him into the rest of the house with Lucy and Patches! :)
Even though I keep him separate I get him his leukemia shot (Purevax), because I
fear that if he ever gets out into their space he will immediately attack them
and draw blood.

Thanks for the suggestion though! :)

Re: Lucy is bored

Quincy is sweet with us, but touchy. When he does not want to be pet
anymore, or just when he is moody, he nips us. I think it was that, and not the
biting of other cats, that made the shelter label him as unadoptable. He
does not seem like a bully at all. I actually call him my dandy, because he is
very fussy, and cleans himself a million times a day, and meows for me to clean
his litterbox after he uses it. He is scared of other cats, I think, and
that is why he gets so hysterical. He does not want to see them or be near
them or go looking for trouble like a bully. He just gets hysterical when
he sees them. He needs to feel like an only cat and be with people who do
not freak out at getting bitten (he doesn't break skin or anything, but it does
hurt a little sometimes). We love him a lot and are glad that we took him,
but it is very lucky that we got matched up with each other, because he would
have been very hard to place (and the shelter had indeed given up). He is so
handsome, though, it's hard to believe anyone would claim he is
unadoptable! And very playful and talkative.

Yes, Simon was totally a character. I miss the little bugger.
One time Quincy was howling and we knew it was because he could see Simon, but
we could not for the life of us figure out where Simon was. He had jumped from a
counter in the upstairs loft area (the upstairs bedroom had a counter rather
than a full wall on one side) down a ways and at a very difficult angle onto a
little shelf that jutted out from the loft and overlooked Quincy's part of the
house, and was hanging his head over the edge looking at Quincy and, I swear,
smiling, while Quincy went on and on like someone was hanging him from his
toes. Oh, Simon was so naughty. I really miss him.

The rest of mine have been so quiet this past week. There were several evenings we just couldn't take the quiet and left the house to escape it. I don't know what to think about it. I honestly don't know if this was normal before Paassht left us. She took up so much of our attention - throughout her life, not only when she was ill - because she was the one who asked for it. The others behaved as more "typical" cats, you know..."don't call me, I'll call you and we'll talk about me sitting in your lap sometime...maybe". I am waiting to see how they adapt and renegotiate their social order now that the Top Cat has gone. Several of them want the green bed, which we just bought for Paassht the day before she died. Her mama, Kroger, has been in it the most.BTW the bed was an impulse buy that turned out to be a perfect choice for a cat with severe fatigue and breathing difficulties. There's a picture at
http://community.webshots.com/photo/548170569/2979112840086746363EbFRHE. She alternated between leaning against the bolster and stretching out flat on the leopard-print cushion which is underneath the bed in this picture. She really appreciated that also. The label says it's self heating and it did seem to help her keep warm in the last few weeks. The bed came from Tractor Supply and the cushion was bought at PetSmart.Becca[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I know what ya mean...Sleepypants hasn't quite been himself since hisbrother, Ewok, died! Thanks Wendy, I am better but not 100%. I know I'll never stop missing her or worrying about the mistakes I may or may not have made, but the pain has been more manageable this week. We got her urn back on Tuesday and it gave us some closure. The presentation was so beautiful. Along with the urn (a little black urn for a little black cat) we got a certificate of individual cremation and an angel cat pin, all packaged in a gift bag decorated with a little white bow and some tiny paper roses. I've been wearing the pin on my ID lanyard at work. If anyone needs this service in the Middle Tennessee area, I highly recommend Littlest Angels Pet Crematory. Our vet recommended her and her listing in the phone book was also the one I chose by sheer gut instinct: "Individual cremations performed with care in a country setting", just that, the name and the phone number. The voice on the answering machine is so calm and soothing, unlike the other
place I called where I got the standard "I'm either on the phone or with a client". That was such a turnoff, but it was no surprise as the ad made it sound like a funeral home for pets.We got a lovely card from the specialist which she wrote and signed personally. Everyone there was so wonderful. Thanks, Wendy. I am functioning much better than I have after other
deaths. Not sure why. The first week was incredibly hard-- spent the first
weekend drugged on sleeping pills just trying not to be awake. Now I am
basically functioning, even ok at times, but having intermittent flashbacks and
just generally missing Ginger. I am also missing all the others,
too.

Patches has loose stool that today is diarrhea, and so far is not
responding to the metronidazole. So I now have some anxiety about her taking
over my emotions too. It is hard not to just focus on the possibility that
she too has lymphoma, in her intestines. I have a generally ominous
feeling about my two remaining positives, which I hope is just that, a
feeling.

Thanks again,
