Re: [Felvtalk] UTI Question

2011-07-08 Thread Caspercat
Not sure if this is possible but they probably got a bad batch of Frontline
- I've used it in the Northeast with zero proplems (and like it because it
addresses fleas & ticks). My vet also started using a product called
v-somthing but it doesn't help with ticks. If you know for sure you only
have a flea problem (no ticks) then advantage is a good product (and will
get rid of ear mites and worms as well). Just spoke to a lady yesterday who
does rescue. She orders advantage from Canada via the mail as it is much
cheaper that way.

About the stones - does the cat appear to be straining when peeing or appear
constipated? That would be indicative of stones. Also if the cat is prone
to stones he may have developed an aversion to using the litter box
and choose other objects to pee on instead or he may have developed an
aversion to using the litter box for another reason. So changing the type
of litter you use may help. Having said all that we had a cat that prone to
UTIs and they way she would let us know she had one is by peeing on our bed
(hooray for waterproof matress covers).

Is there anyway you can call and ask your vet at home what they use to
diagnose kidney stones?

In googling feline kidney stones it appears that x-trays or ultrasounds are
used for diagnosis. Found x-rays mentioned on a couple of sites (but note
that the information below is from a site I just found by googling so not
sure how good it is http://www.cat-health-guide.org/felinekidneystones.html).
My guess is that if the vet finds no stones via x-ray the next step they
will suggest an ultrasound (which of course is even more expensive).

"If cat kidney stones are suspected, your vet will take x-rays. The stones
will usually show up white on the x-ray. Some kinds of stones don’t show up
on x-rays and can only be seen by ultrasound. Your vet will look for stones
elsewhere in the urinary tract as well.

Your vet will also test your cat’s urine to see if she has a bladder
infection. Bladder infections are very common in pets with kidney stones. "

Re: [Felvtalk] Dexter

So very sorry for your loss. I post rarely but have been following Dexter's
story and it touched me. About your Euthanasia question - I don't know the
answer but you may want to ask Dr. Cantrell to get the specifics of the
yellow liquid just for your own information (and because you will continue
to wonder). Underneath your question is - did you do the right thing, soon
enough? The answer is unequivocally yes. Your love for Dexter and the
information you were provided in real time guided you to making the right
choices every step of the way.I know because I’ve been there.
Euthanasia is very sad, particularly after a long struggle in the hospital.
I’ve beaten myself up for similar circumstances. You did the best you
could (and yes your best was good enough). In the end you helped Dexter
pass peacefully, which is a gift. If Dexter could talk to you right now
what would he say? He would probably say think of me with joy in your heart
for knowing me and please go play with my brothers and sisters for me.

Ask the base police if you can borrow one trap for your cat and learn how to
use it. This is a better option then the base police trying to trap cats
for two reasons (1) they don't know your cat like you do so you can set up
the trap with food you cat likes and smells of home (perhaps paper towel
with your scent on it) and it can be near your door - this will result in
better success of trapping your cat (2) this avoids the base police setting
out traps for other cats.

Re: [Felvtalk] VooDoo is missing

2011-06-24 Thread Caspercat
If possible keep a bowl of his favorite food on your steps/porch so even if
he stays out a little while he will get food. Also when you put the food
out make a big production of it by either banging the can a few times with
the spoon or rattling the bag so he knows it's there. Keep the house quiet
as possible and at night keep as many lights off as possible. Given how
spooked he is you may need to catch him in a trap to get him back inside -
keep food outside in the same place for him as this will be he location of
the trap if needed. If you do see him outside just you go out and sit
quietly to see if he comes up to you. If he does approach you just take a
minute or two to pet him just as if you were inside and when you can do it
easily (almost naturally as if you were inside) pick him up (hold him tight
as even though this it is you just picking him up may scare him) and bring
him inside. Not sure if you have other cats or if it is possible but if you
can leave a door open by the food you put out so he has a chance to just
slither back into the house on this own. Many positive thoughts are being
sent your way. Hugs, Elizabeth
