Just wanted to bring a positive note to you all.

I took my FeLV girl Minstrel to the vet last week to check her mouth cos she
was showing dental signs. I'd had her checked at New Year just before Buddy
(FIV+) passed away and her gums were a little inflammed but not severe. Last
Friday she had 3 wobbly teeth and red gums so she'd had root infection
travel down. The vet said the pathology looked like what any cat can get and
not specifically just related to FeLV. She had 5 teeth out on Tuesday and
came home trying to get in the bag of cat biscuits bless her - but she is
eating well soft food complete with antibiotics sprinkled over and some
painkiller for couple of days. Anyway, whilst she was having pre-op bloods
taken I asked them to re-check her FeLV status as I know occassionally cats
can rid themselves of the virus and I just wanted to know either way. The
vet phoned this morning whenthe blood results came back from the lab and
Minstral is now FeLV negative :-) I didn't know whether to laugh or cry but
I think I'll be opening the champagne tonight. I could now even consider
introducing a new cat into the house (would obviously have to be FeLV -
though but would mean Minstrel has company when I'm at work - and helping
any cat is better than helping none. Need to book leave from work and
consider carefully before that though - but what a nice surprise.

hugs and good wishes to all your kitties xxx

A Day to Celebrate!!!

2008-01-10 Thread Chris Behnke
My two youngest, Mack and Monty, turn 4 years old today!!! Monty was
diagnosed with FeLV+ when he was just 9 months old and my vet at the time
wanted me to put him to sleep because he wouldn’t make it. Thankfully I
wanted a second opinion and a year after his diagnosis he tested negative
for FeLV+! And today he is 4 years old and healthy!!!

One of my babies, Monty, was diagnosed at 9 months old. He was incredibly ill
and the vet didn’t think he would make it and wanted me to put him to sleep as
well. I wasn’t ready to give up, so I went to another vet. 3 years 3 months
later, Monty is still with me and have never been sick since his initial
diagnosis. He lives in the same house as his brother (Felv negative), his
mother (negative), his grandmother (negative), 2 aunts (both negative), 2
uncles (both negative) and 4 other unrelated cats who are all negative. We did
lose one of his aunts and his dad who were both positive. They all share the
same space and have for over 4 years.

He's not eating and he's quite thin.

The dr wants to put him to sleep. Is this really my only option? Also - if i

them tested?

I'm so sad.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Sad News Something to Think About

2007-11-05 Thread Chris Behnke
Early Sunday morning, one of my fur-babies passed away from a heart
attack. There was no warning, she had never been sick a day in her
life. Chelsea was only 4 years old. The vet did an autopsy today and
confirmed that it was cardiomyopathy. Basically there was a
thickening in her heart walls and her heart failed. She went very
quickly and without pain. One minute she was walking, the next she
was gone. There was nothing I could have done. Cardiomyopathy is
something that is prevalent among Maine Coons and American Short
Haired cats and is usually found between the ages of 1 and 4 years
old. They are not a lot of symptoms and cannot always be detected
before it causes fatalities. Regular vet visits could help to detect
it early. Vets can do xrays to see the heart or listen to the heart
rate and make sure nothing is unusual. Also, never take for granted
the time you have with your animals. I loved Chelsea and she knew it.
I didn't get to say goodbye since she went so quick, but at least I
know she knew she was loved and treasured. I make it a habit to tell
all my animals that I love them everyday.

I didn't post this for sympathy, but I wanted to share with you the
importance of regular vet checkups. Because I have so many animals, I
was told that I didn't have to do regular checkups for all of my
babies, I just needed to take them in when they were sick. I now know
better.

Thanks,

Chris

RE: FeLV Help for a 5 year old male cat

2007-09-30 Thread Chris Behnke
Sometimes it is hard to completely diagnose what is going on with a cat with
leukemia. There are so many factors to consider. Not to mention, sometimes
the symptoms may point to too many things instead of narrowing it down. I
recently lost one of my cats to a tumor in the eye and nasal cavity. She
started getting sick earlier this spring, but we didn't find out about the
tumor until it was too late. This was no ones fault. We, the vet and I,
ran a lot of test, had her in for exams at least 3 times a month. We tried
many medications but nothing helped her to get better. The vet really cared
and wasn't just trying to make money. But the symptoms weren't enough, nor
were the blood tests. It sounds like Whisper could have Herpes. This is
common with FeLV+ and is usually treatable. But, once again, the symptoms
for herpes are also the same for other diseases/viruses. Basically I am
just trying to say that it may seem as if all the vet cares about is money,
but this may not be the case. I would do some research on the web about
Whisper's symptoms and then talk with the vet again and see what he says
about what you found out.

I have had my cat, Whisper, for about 5 years now he
use to weigh 18lbs (a year ago), now he weighs about
7-10lbs. He is the oldest of 3 other cats. A month ago
we found out he has Leukemia. We never knew what was
wrong with him, we never thought it to be Leukemia.
About a year ago we took him to the vet, for vomiting
and drooling, the vet laughed at us because he thought
whisper was in really good health.Well a year went by
with out any treatment or even knowing some this was
wrong with him.We took him to the vet about a month or
so ago for his eyes ( he had an infection in his eyes,
and was not eating), they ran a blood test and they
told us he has Leukemia. They kept him over night to
start the treatments right a way. They gave us
Clacamox Drops (very pricey), Neo/Poly/Dex Ophthalmic
drops, and the Interferon. He seemed to be getting
worse. We took him to the vet today to get them to do a
check up on him ( he hasnt been eating, been having to
force feed him, he wont get up much, excessive
drooling.) and get more of his medication, they
believe he has ulcers in his mouth which is causing
him to not eat and make him drool. Well now they think
he has some other disease kind of like Leukemia that
is causing the ulcers, lack of appetite, and causing
the medications to not work. So they want to run MORE
test and give him MORE medication, etc. We are not
sure what we want to do. He seems to be suffering so
much, and he also seems to know he does not have much
longer to live. We are all talking about either
keeping him on his medication, let him live out his
life without his medication, or taking him off his
medication and see if he will do better, and if he
does not do better then we will put him down.

BUT, what I dont understand is that the vet cant fully
explain to us about: what is going on, why cant they
help us more, what is the other possible disease, how
long might he live more, etc. It just seems like all
they want is money, money and more money. One of his
medication they sell for about $26 and we can get it
from 1-800-PETMEDS for about $10, its the same bottle,
same size, same doses. The test for leukemia is $55,
and so is the other test. I dont understand what is
going on. Whisper is my baby, I would give every
thing to help him, but with the vet confusing us we
really dont know what to do.

Can you possibly explain every thing a bit better?

Sincerely,
Gina Whisper

Dawn, I'm far from the big expert, but I think the chances are almost
nonexistent that you're transferring anything by just walking from room to
room. The motto for the virus is if it dries, it dies. It reminds me of
a memorable passage in the book Everything You Always Wanted to Know About
Sex... in which someone asked if you can catch STDs from toilet seats. The
answer was, yes, under the following circumstances: someone with an open
genital sore (I know, TMI) uses a toilet and presses the sore against the
toilet seat. Seconds later, you, also with a sore, use the same toilet and
press your sore against the same spot. Otherwise, no. ;-) So unless you go
from, say, cleaning your FeLV+ kitty's teeth, to your healthy kitties within
seconds, with your fingers still wet with saliva, it's not gonna happen.
Also, somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but won't the others now
automatically test positive because they have the vaccine in them? In any
case, I'm not sure there's a real need to segregate Bea from everybody now.

Hello again everyone,

Before I had Bea tested, she was with my two other catkids (ages 4 10
years) for 4 days - sharing food (wet dry), water and liter box.

It was only after that 4 days did we realize Bea tested positive (Elisa
IFA)

We immediately took our other two in and had them tested (negative but too
early to tell) and vaccinated.

In anyone's opinion, how great of a chance do you think they will test
positive in 6 months when I re-test them? Do you think there was enough
exposure in those 4 days? I am particularly worried about my 4 year old
because I fed them all wet food and she immediately eats anything that is
leftover from all 3 bowls.

Also, Bea is now quarantined in a bedroom by herself and I visit with her as
much as possible when I am home - even sleeping with her at night time to
give her some human contact (much to my husbands dismay). I wash my hands
thoroughly when I leave the room and bea has her own bowls/water dishes that
I keep seperate from my others. She has her own litter box as well. Is it
possible to spread any of the virus from just walking around the room,
transferring it on my clothes then walking through the rest of my house? I'm
just so concerened I'm passing it around more.

Thanks

Dawn

Kaylee is gone

2007-09-11 Thread Chris Behnke
I just came back from the vets after saying goodbye to my girl. The tumor
had eaten away too much at her eye and nose area that there was no hope. I
could have brought her home but it would only have been a few days and she
wouldn’t have felt good. So I went to the vets and said my goodbyes while
she was still sedated and held her while I had to let go. Thank you
everyone for you support.

RE: Question about eye ulcers -Update

2007-09-10 Thread Chris Behnke
I have had a cat once before who ended up with one eye, his cornea had
flipped and his eye had to be removed. He never acted like he was missing
anything. Right now I am very glad to have had that experience so I have
little worries about her being one-eyed. I did ask the vet about cancer,
and she feels that the tumor is not cancer related, and that I should not
worry about that. My husband asked me if there is such a thing as a tumor
not being cancer, and I realized that I have no idea. I told my boss at
work today about the surgery and was surprised that she offered me the day
off (she is NOT an animal person). I will keep you all posted as soon as I
know anything. I appreciate all of your thoughts, prayers and support.
This is especially hard with my mother living 2000 miles away and not being
able to be here for me.

Thank you all,

Chris

Chris,

Prayers that little Kaylee's surgery is a success. I'm sorry you guys are
going through this. I never even considered a tumor when I read your posts.
Did the vet think that the cancer will be limited to the eye only? I sure
hope so. Our Smookie only has one eye and she does great. She doesn't even
know she only has one eye! So Kaylee should do just fine being a pirate!
Please keep us posted tomorrow or soon after if you get a chance and let us
know how she does. She's lucky to have you in her corner!

RE: Update on the 'hotspot' on Stretch's back

2007-08-09 Thread Chris Behnke
Just be careful with the peroxide, it can actually prevent proper healing if
used to much. Weird but true. I was doing that with Momma's back as well
until I talked to the vet about it. I did notice that it worked great when
I first started using it, but eventually the spot stopped healing.

Hey guys,

Stretch's back is healing up quite nicely! Thank you for the advice! The
spot was larger than a quarter, and it was just raw skin-no fur and the top
layers of skin were missing; it was completely reddish, poor baby. I had
already had him on a course of antibiotics, which I'm sure helped, but after
reading advice from this site and another, I started using hydrogen peroxide
3-4 times a day to disinfect the spot, and immediately after, I would put
antibiotic cream on her. The spot is now the size of a dime. It's healing
from the edges in, instead of forming a complete scab. Weird, but
nevertheless, it is healing, thank goodness! I really think that it might
have been a spider bite instead of an allergic reaction, but we will never
know.

:)

RE: A bit OT: Need help with sore on kitty's back; reaction to flea meds?

2007-08-04 Thread Chris Behnke
My Momma cat has this problem as well only it is much bigger than a quarter.
We tried the shot and many other things, but the main problem we have is
that when it is healing, it itches and she scratches. We have resorted to
putting antibiotic cream on the spot with a piece of gauze covering the area
and then wrapping a self-adhesive bandage (like an ace bandage) around her
body to keep the antibiotic in place and prevent more damage from
scratching. We change the bandage completely during the different stages of
healing: scabs, new skin, hair growth. This works as long as we don't take
the bandages off until she is completely healed and her hair is grown back.

Yes, the astore is a way for Rescuties to get a percentage of the
stuff people buy. i need to change that to a general amazon.com link
though. Although the astrones are a good idea, I find people are
confused by them and it would be better to just link to the front
page

of Amazon.  Amazon pays monthly if you have over $10 in commissinos;
if not ,they roll over to the next month.

Anyway, the Amazon program is called an affiliate program. Many
charities do have the affiliate links on their pages. if you
favorite

charity does not I would encouage them to set one up as it takes
little time to do so and they can generate some income.

though. Although the astrones are a good idea, I find people are
confused by them and it would be better to just link to the front page
of Amazon.  Amazon pays monthly if you have over $10 in commissinos;
if not ,they roll over to the next month.

Anyway, the Amazon program is called an affiliate program. Many
charities do have the affiliate links on their pages. if you favorite
charity does not I would encouage them to set one up as it takes
little time to do so and they can generate some income.

brain. She couldn't stand - she was just like a little rag doll. Her
back was very sensitive - she was obviously in pain - I am not sure
why. I talked to her. She was ready to go. She didn't want to be
kept alive by extreme measures only to waste away and be in pain. It
was a very hard decision but I believe it was the right one for her.
She was very close to death and she was gone in no more than a second

There is nothing I wouldn't have done for her - no matter how much it
cost...but no amount of money could have given her back her quality of
life. I believe that to have kept going by extreme measures would
have been selfish of me. She made it almost a year after her first

I am so glad she slept with me last night. She knew that she was

This is so very hard. We had such a close bond.

Re: Help needed

2007-02-26 Thread Chris Behnke
You have to be careful with vaccinating because there are cases where that has
caused a cat to become positive. That was another thing the vet talked to me
about. She feels that as long as they are indoors, it is not required to
vaccinate as the vaccaine is not 100% guaranteed.

found 3 kittens in a dumpster, 2 weeks later 4 more - we bottle raised all of
them and they all lived. At that same time a stray came in winter and had 4
babies. They all lived also. A month after this we took a trip 500 miles away
and found 2 kittens starving in a field in the middle of nowhere. We brought
them back. These were tested (not sure why vet decided this) and they were ok
at that time. All the cats got along and seldon fought. If they did it was not
the biting, scratching, etc... Soon after that a cat roamed up at a barbeque we
had. She was young and in heat. We did not want her to get pregnant and she
stayed so we brought her in. She was a very shy cat. She liked attention but
seldom went near the others. Her eyes, nose, and mouth were clear (no
discharge). A few weeks ago she started throwing up. We took her to the vet.
She had nver been seriously ill (none have). They are all around 4 yrs, old
now. Anyhow the vet said something was probably stuck in her intestines so they
operated. All they found was enlarged lymph nodes. They did a biopsy and said
they were not cancerous. She started doing better but then it was hard to get
her to eat. We took her back in and they said her lungs had fluid in them. They
drained it off. After all of this they came back and said she tested postive
for leukemia. They recommended putting her to sleep.

Now we have a nightmare. We have all the others, plus just paid out
$700.00 for a cat that they ended up putting down. Don't know if the operation
threw her into it all or what.

We are going to have the others tested but it will be over $1000.00. We
feel awful. If you don't have the money though it isn't always as some people
think to keep up with everything.

Re: dirty bum bum - OT (as if it needs to be pointed out)

2006-11-09 Thread Chris Behnke
I have two comments. First, on the issue of dirty bum, I have a large maine
coon cat with extremely long hair. I have to regularly trim is butt hair or
else it gets super dirty. Before I can start cutting, I give him catnip.
This distracts him so he won't bite me. He hates having his hair cut.

Second, about Winston, I have a cat who reacts the same way. Chelsea was
rescued when she was about 6 months old. We couldn't keep her so I found
her a home with a friend of mine. After a year, he gave her back becuase he
was moving. When she came back, she would ask to be petted then hiss and
bite. My husband and I have been very patient. When we pet her, we try to
stop before she hisses. After a year in our home, she is much better. She
loves attention, and rarely ever bites anymore. Our vet thought that she
might have been traumatized when she lived with my no-longer friend. I just
wanted to share this with you to let you know that there is a chance that
Winston will stop be aggressive too.

Thanks,

He came home from the vets with a little respiratory issue but we cleared

This boy has not really shown any signs of illness other then what I've

2006-04-08 Thread Chris Behnke

Today one of my cats turned 7. Bandit has
been with us since he was 6 weeks old. He is not Felv+ but he does have
bad asthma. Two days ago I remembered his brother, Smoky, who did four
years ago of cancer. Just two days before his birthday. Every year,
I worry about Bandit getting cancer since the vet thought that Smoky's cancer
was hereditary. But thankfully each year he is still cancer free.
Bandit is also the oldest cat in our family and has also beaten my record with
cats. My very first cat, Sarge, passed away just 5 years after I found
him. He also had cancer. Then we had to put Moonshadow down 5 years
after we found him. He was so sick and there was no hope. Then there
was Smoky. And the most recent lost was my Sylvester who was Felv+ and
passed away last year, just 2 years after we rescued him. Now I have 2
cats with Asthma, one also is Felv+, and 11 cats that so far are healthy as can
be! I am thankful for all the time I am allowed to spend with my "kids",
even when it is short. Every year on Bandit's birthday, I celebrate the
good and remember the sad.

Thanks for letting me talk.

Re: OT - Humiliating experience with my cat

2006-03-30 Thread Chris Behnke
Unfortuneatly I have experienced this. When my husband and I first moved
into our house, my little furgirl was upset. She would pee on the bed while
we were gone at work. Then, a couple of times, she peed on my head while I
was sleeping. I finally figured out what was wrong- she felt she wasn't
getting enough attention. Once I started making her my first priority when
I came home, she finally stopped.

Subject: OT - Humiliating experience with my cat

 Hi guys,

Well, last night I had a humiliating experience with
our geriatric kitty, Julie, who has hyperthyroidism
and is on meds for that. After I got off work, I sat
down on the couch to eat dinner around 9 pm. Julie
jumped up on the couch, backed her little butt up to
me, and peed all over my back, my hair, and the couch.
I do believe she did it on purpose, because when I
shot up off the couch, she ran over to her chicken
broth bowl in the kitchen and started meowing. It
hurt my feelings and made me angry that she would do
this. I have never even heard of a cat doing anything
like this. Has anyone heard of something like this,
or had any experience with this type of situation?
 Any thoughts?

 Thanks,
 Wendy

Just the other day, I had a good
missing-my-baby-cry too. Sylvester has been gone since last June and some
days it still hits me really hard. I also lost a sweet baby about 4 years
ago (exactly 4 years in just a few days) so this time of the year is still
really hard for me. Sylvester had leukemia and was only 3 years old.
My other cat, Smoky, had cancer and was 2 days shy of his 3rd birthday.

In other words, yeah, I completely
understand.

RE: dry food causing problems?

2006-02-04 Thread Chris Behnke

My vet told me that the original thinking
of dry food is changing.  Before it was recommended to only feed dry food.  Now they are finding out that cats do become
obese or have chronic constipation.  Not
to mention that dry food is harder to digest and can slow the metabolism.

I'm reading through Wendy's sick kitty manual, and I
just found this, which surprised me:

Dry food: Not good for cats. Contributes to obesity.
Exacerbates all sorts of health problems.

I wondered if you folks could help me understand why this is? We've been
feeding our cats weight-management hairball-control dry food for years, and I'd
never seen this kind of claim before. Right now we have Eukanuba
Mature Care for our cats that are 9 years old and actually eating.

Question about IFA Test Results

2005-10-24 Thread Chris Behnke

Here's the whole story. When Monty was 8
months old, he became very sick. When I took him to the vets, he was
diagnosed as FeLV+. At the time, the vet didn't think he would make
it. Now, a year later Monty is very healty. He has never been sick
since his diagnosis and has not shown any signs. Because of this, we had
him tested again. The ELISA test came back with a very faint positive but
the IFA test was negative. What exactly does this mean?

Thanks,

Re: vaccinating FELV cats for FELV

2005-10-17 Thread Chris Behnke

My vet said to NEVER vaccinate as it will weaken their immune system.

Hi all,

I've recently heard from someone , that one approach to enhancing the
immune systems of FELV cats is to vaccinate them periodically for FELV.
Anybody heard of that?

It changed my thinking - I'd always heard NOT to give the FELV vaccine to
FELV cats. Helps me remember not to get too set in my thoughts, in
particular about FELV. Any knowledge of that?

Thanks!

GLoria
