Re: Delmonte Pet Food recall...
I find little comfort in the identification of specific lots of food - does that mean they just didn't look at others yet? Is it possible the lot I purchased from is contaminated but because it was out before the recall there was no retrospective testing? Scares the pants off of me (and nobody wants that!) If it can be trusted, Masterfoods, which makes some of the higher end foods, has declared their foods have been validated for safety: http://www.mars.com/global/home.html The recent US pet food recall initiated by Menu Foods and other companies does not include any Mars Petcare pet food products. All of our brands, including PEDIGREE, CESAR and THE GOODLIFE RECIPE food for dogs, and WHISKAS, SHEBA, TEMPTATIONS, and THE GOODLIFE RECIPE food for cats, are safe for pets to enjoy. The safety of products not involved in the recall was validated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on March 23. According to the FDA, pet owners should feel confident feeding unrecalled products to their pets.

Happy Thanksgiving
Best wishes to all this Thanksgiving day. O God, we thank thee, for all the creatures thou hast made, so perfect in their kind -- great animals like the elephant and the rhinoceros, humorous animals like the camel and the monkey, friendly ones like the dog and the cat, working ones like the horse and the ox, timid ones like the squirrel and the rabbit, majestic ones like the lion and the tiger, for birds with their songs. O God, give us such love for thy creation, that love may cast out fear, and all thy creatures -- and thy creation, see in men and women like us their caregiver (sic) and their friend. ~ George Appleton

Good Lessons Screensaver
Good morning all, I created a screensaver from one of my favorite powerpoints - Good Lessons (life lessons and cute animals - can't go wrong) and uploaded it for anyone who is interested. It is self installing and also has an uninstaller. It's 5.7MB so could be painful for dial-up connections (I feel your pain - took me awhile to upload it!) For those who have asked for screensavers - this is not the same program I'm using but will be how I likely distribute them so as not to clog the mailservers. Hope you enjoy ~ Evan http://s15.quicksharing.com/v/1377441/GoodLessons.exe.html

I hate bumper stickers, but putting out a notice on a nondescript white car - which matches the description of 90% of cars out there, it seems, I'm going to put a pink one on there from a CD store back home. License plates numbers are hard to remember and easy to remove - bumper stickers aren't. 3. Collars. I don't think that having the cats in a carrier would have been better - in fact maybe worse, because they wouldn't be able to leave the car, but even as indoor cats, I see how collars are a good idea. 4. Cut off switch in the car. Who would want this car? I felt, and still feel to some extent, but whether or not I know the answer to that is not the point. I don't know who and I don't know why, I just know that they did and if there's a simple fix to prevent it from happening again, even if it probably won't ever in my lifetime, I am going to take it in order to feel safer. 5. I know it's not much, but I would gladly create a similar montage image for anyone that wishes to do something similar for their loved one. The advantage of creating it digitally is that you can insert several images into one digital "photo" (as well as a poem, verse, tribute...) and that image can be directly transferred (on a much larger, but crisp) scale onto the poster. We also did the same for a single photo, which hangs by our bed. I put a scaled down copy of the poster we had made at the site below. Re: integration
We've got ten little ones - only our most recent addition, Smokey, is Felv+. To date, he has a "private suite". We recently altered the door to allow for a flexiglass lower panel so he can see the other cats but not actually make contact with. The upper half of the door we screened in. We're hoping this helps make him feel a little bit more a part of the household . We're still struggling with the decision on whether or not to integrate with our negatives. ~ Evan Susan Franklin wrote: As you already know, I have two - girls (Kelly 16 and Meagan 8). Gunnar (for now) tested ELISA +, with a retest scheduled for December 1. The girls have their second vaccination this Tuesday night. Tanya said to wait an additional two weeks after that. So let me ask you all this: The girls know Gunnar exists. We've brought him up in his carrier to spend time with the family. There's been a bit of mild hissing and a few paw slaps. We also have a cage for Gunnar, since he's just a young guy and might need to be contained for a bit - especially when no one is home. Please let me have your suggestions and hints as how to finally get them all together. I KNOW THAT YOU CAN ONLY MAKE ONE GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION. We got Meagan at the Chicago Ridge Humane Society in 1999 - she showed us her "Dracula fangs" like Kelly has and I knew she was the one. Gunnar, however, was DELIVERED to us like a Domino's pizza - God sent him ringing our doorbell. It didn't matter that I didn't "order" him and it didn't matter what "toppings" he had - God wanted him to live in this house. P.S. Gunnar also has "Dracula fangs" like the girls, so I knew that was my sign - God just saved me an adoption fee! ;D I look forward to hearing from all of you. I've said it before and I'll say it again - when it comes toexperts, it's YOU guys. Not the so-called"experts," and not the vets. I'll trust what you tell me over any vet any day. A bit bastardized but meant to lighten spirits. Warm wishes to all of the wonderful Guardians out there. To be posted VERY LOW on the refrigerator door - nose height. Dear Dogs and Cats, The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate of food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years --canine or feline attendance is not mandatory. Leslie - that was an inspired post - thank you for the reminder ~ Evan --- Leslie [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Kayte, My first FeLV+ cat was also the first cat that I ever owned on my own. I'd grown up with all sorts of critters, but it took a few years after graduating college to finally get in a situation where I could own my first all mine pet. I'd been wanting this cat forever. I found Sushi at a shelter, she was 2 years old and demanded that I take her home that very instant. I L-O-V-E-D that cat. The shelter had tested for leukemia and FIV before I adopted her and she'd tested negative. One month after having her home, she was very lethargic. I ran with her in a carrier to a vet that I'd seen near my apartment, but I'd never met. This was New York City (Queens), so not having a car, and not wanting to subject a cat to a subway ride, I was pretty limited in my vet choices. The vet was an ass. He had no bedside manner. He made me feel like the whole situation was my fault. He'd HAVE to rehydrate, he'd HAVE to do bloodwork, he'd HAVE to keep her during the day - like I wasn't going to be paying him for his efforts. I was in tears, which didn't make him respect me any more. Quite frankly, he scared the hell out of me, and as it's all of our deepest fears that it really IS our fault, I was a mess. He retested her for FeLV+ (she'd been rescued from a house full of cats, so may have been exposed close to rescue and the first testing). I took her home as she'd perked back up, the fluids really helped, and she rebounded fully. Despite this, when he called to tell me that she was positive and anemic and had maybe a month to live, told me to expect to see rapid deterioration, blah, blah, blah, I was again distraught. The next week, against the back drop of her romping around and talking to herself, chasing bits of dust, knocking things over (her favorite was to knock my glass of water onto me at night), trying to escape, I called everyone that I knew hysterically telling them that my cat was dying. The vet said so. Eventually, emotionally spent. I hung up the phone, slumped down against the wall and lethargically, tearfully gazed over at her across the room. Making eye contact, she marched over and placed a World Cup worthy head butt against my pathetic forehead. I giggled. And I realized that I was being a dumass. Maybe she had this disease. Maybe she was dying, but who of us isn't? She wasn't dead, and I was wasting time being a melodramatic human. So instead of focusing on how she was going to die, I focused on how she was going to live. I didn't have any support, but I found a raw feeding list and, though I didn't switch to raw for a while, I started researching the feline diet. And I put her on a better food. And I moved into the city and found a good vet. I took her in for check-ups and loved the heck out of that cat until she passed two years after I'd adopted her of a heart attack (myocardial infarction). Yes, my life infarcted at that point, and I still miss my sweet marshmallow-y friend, who would lay on my arm at night and purr, and gaze into my eyes like she was proud of me. But she'd led me to another positive cat to adopt, Hepburn. And Hepburn led me to Satchmo that I have today (also positive). And Sushi, after all, after all that that jerk vet said, never did deterioriate. Never did succomb to the leukemia. I owned Hep for 2 1/2 years, she did die of FIP, which was probably leukemia related, but I'd gotten her as an older kitten, so even there, she was on the high end of her life expectency and she, too, was an amazing, happy, healthy cat until the end. Satch I've had for two years now, I adopted him at 5 years old, so we don't know when he was exposed to the virus, but he's the biggest, stompiest guy you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting, and other than being susceptible to URI's (which as long as I don't bring home sick kittens that already have URI's) hasn't been any problem. I have high hopes for him going a very long time. And I'm thinking of adopting him a friend - either a positive kitten or a negative adult cat - once he stops coughing. I know that this has been long, and work is piling up, but I just wanted to tell you my story. Let you know that I understand what you're feeling, but take your cues from Crackers. Is he laying around in dirty pajamas, watching Ricki Lake, stumbling amongst empty Chinese take out cartons, wondering why me? This is a terrible illness, but not one that is powerful enough to take the good times away while they are here. Get a new vet. Pinpoint when Crackers was exposed. What happened to Pokemon? Was she positive? Put Crackers on a good diet - there are lots to choose from ranging from Max Cat to raw feeding - expensive doesn't always mean good, nor does the fact of it being sold out of a vet's office. Do some reading about which ingredients should be there and which shouldn't. A lot of people

Very nicely stated Belinda. Us two leggers can be a bit dense and sometimes a strong word is necessary to get through - I think you found a good balance. I too want to offer kudos for both your website and the wonderful things you do - you're a responsible caretaker for the companions we've been gifted with ~ Evan Dee Belinda wrote: Changed this paragraph a bit: Some people obtain free cats to train pit bulls to fight, and they are killed in a very violent and gruesome manner by these vicious animals. Then there are people who feed them to snakes as meals (some large exotic snakes require live food). There are crazy people who obtain free animals solely to abuse them. Others, referred to as bunchers, buy them to make money by selling them to labs, where they are ultimately destroyed after most likely enduring many horrific experiments. These bunchers get anywhere from $30 to $100 dollars a pet from these labs. I think I'm happy with that, it gets the point across but isn't too graphic, my priority isn't being politically correct but hopefully keeping the cats posted as safe as possible. Many people just have no idea how horrible some humans can be, I was a uninformed one myself not too many years ago. I never would of though anyone could do something so awful to any living creature but the internet has quickly made me aware of many horrible things.

We just met with our attorney tonight to draw up wills and establish a trust for our animal family.-it was easier than we thought. We have no assets to speak of but are assigning a portion of our life insurance to the pet trust fund. The most difficult thing was identifying a person who would mange the care for them in the fashion we wanted. The trust will pay a monthly stipend to the caretaker for their care and will be dispensed either to the caretaker or an assigned charity upon the death of the last of them. Off Topic - wills and trusts
Sorry if this is a bit off topic but would greatly appreciate any advice folks have to offer. We are meeting with our attorney tomorrow to draw up wills (long overdue) and are stumped as to how to provide for our four legged family members in the event we both pass at the same time. We really don't have friends or family that truly comprehend what we mean when we say they are family members - we have no lower expectations for their care and well being than we do our own - and we want to be sure that continues when we pass. We don't want to have our assets tied to our kids (I.E. a portion of our estate goes to so-and-so for the care of our kids - how do we know they won't just spend the money and then, if there's a medical emergency, euthanise them because it costs too much to provide care?) The thought of our family not being properly cared for is very unnerving. Thank you for taking the time to read and any suggestions are greatly appreciated ~ Evan Dee
Re: Off Topic - wills and trusts
Thanks Diane. I have managed a bit of surfing since my post and can share the following: On June 29, 2006, the governor passed S.B. 660, adopting the Pennsylvania Uniform Trusts Act, including 20 Pa. C.S. Section 7738 (reproduced below), based upon UTC 408, effective on October 27, 2006. (Act No. 98, Section 16(3).) http://www.estateplanningforpets.org/legal-statutes-PA.htm For links to similar statutes in other states: http://www.estateplanningforpets.org/legal-statutes.htm An excellent article was also found at: http://www.peaceablekingdomac.com/without_you.htm I was also thrilled to stumble across this tidbit: Maine passed legislation in March of this year allowing animals to be included in protection orders in domestic violence cases. It seems that many men who abuse wives or girlfriends threaten or harm their animals to coerce or control the women. (Kudos to Maine) http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/trusts_estates_prof/new_legislation/index.html I am a bit worried about the costs of maintaining a trust - we certainly won't have a sizeable estate - but hope we can do something sensible. Diane Rosenfeldt wrote: I'm not a lawyer, but am a legal secretary who has done a bunch of trust and estate work, and even though I can't give legal advice I can at least provide a little info. Are you considering a trust? Where I work, it's rare for people to have a Will without a trust, but then, these are rich people. :-). The downside to trusts is there are ongoing administrative expenses like annual tax preparation, which hopefully would be more than defrayed by the interest generated by the funds in them. THIS is the big advantage of a trust, that it continues to generate income as long as there are sufficient funds to make administering it worthwhile. The general procedure is to make a very simple Will that leaves everything to the trust. That accomplishes a couple of good things: it makes the Will very straightforward and lessens the possibility of being challenged. It also prevents your estate from going through probate, which is a really good thing if there are relatives or others you would rather not know your bidness, even in death. In probate, your Will and your assets are open for inspection by anybody who wants to. You can get really specific in a trust, setting up any number of subtrusts for any number of purposes. You could set up a separate subtrust for your pets, to be administered by someone you trust implicitly, or someone disinterested like a banker or lawyer, or a combination of both, and you can get really particular about how that fund is spent. And if you've got a good trustee who knows how to invest the money, it will easily outlast any pet you provide for.You might even be able to specify that after all your pets are deceased, the money goes to an animal charity -- removes any incentive to hasten their demise. Of course, you have to double check the laws of your state on all this, but if you can find a lawyer who does this kind of thing, as Marylyn suggests, (s)he should know all about this. Hope this helps. I'd brag too! Sounds heavenly. Can you recommend any sites for job and house searching? We feel very out of sync with our area - very little compassion for animal rights and only the privileged two leggers! This is a HUGE measure, because once we get Ear Crops banned, it's only a matter of time until we get DECLAWING on CATS banned! We're pounding away at our animal cruelty laws every session, trying to improve the lives of Vermont's animals. Sorry, just had to brag, I LOVE where I live and the people here! If it CAN be done, then Vermont will always be one of the first in line getting it done in our legislature. We weren't able to get it pastHouse last session, but you can be sure we'll be right back at it this coming session, after the fall elections. It's already passed in the Senate, a HUGE step! Vermont is wonderful, you actually PARTICIPATE in the government here. We have town meetings (instead of polling booths and paper slips, we actually sit in a big room and discuss every law we pass or fail, with questions and answers, as a community), our selectboard is public, and open for discussion every Thursday night, and individuals can go in front of our state legislature and speak on issues. The staterepresentatives and senators live right down the road, and we're all on first name basis. It's really a great state, I wish I would have grown up here, and not have discovered it as late as I did. OK, off my soapbox... just couldn't resist posting about it. FeLV+ Adoption/ Foster Care
We are in desperate need of placement. About 2 to 3 weeks ago a stray cat showed up on our property. For the 1st week or two we could not go near him. We fed him regularly as we could see he was in need of veterinary care. Finally, he let us near him we scheduled a vet appointment on Monday, 08/01/06. To our grave disappointment he is FeLV+. The vet started to give us options, one of which was euthanasia. I stopped her mid-conversation said That Was Not An Option. The vet said due to ethical dilemmas we needed to keep him indoors (to prevent the spread of FeLV reduce his infection risks). However, staying with us is only a TEMPORARY solution. We have 10 healthy indoor cats, 2 of which also go outside in a fence, of our own. We do NOT want them exposed to this virus so the poor dear is isolated/quarantined to his own bedroom, which does not have air conditioning gets fairly hot. This is no way for a feline to live! But this is the best solution we have for him right now on such short notice. Do you know of anyone who can help us? We live in the Western part of Pennsylvania. We would be willing to transport to an adoptive home (after proper adoption screening) or foster placement. I can be reached at the above email or by cell phone, (814) 229-5678. Thank you. ~Dee
