Re: fleas arhhhhh also heartworms

2007-08-27 Thread Susan Dubose
Hi Leslie,

We just started on this thread, we got side tracked from fleas &
treatments,soyou haven't missed much.

I am sorry to hear that you lost a kitty to heartworms, and that you have 2
more that have tested pos.

So, there no treatment for it, but what is the vet telling you to do from here
on out for them?

just curious.

I myself, just cannot treat w/ a preventative 60+ cats every month for
heartworms, especially when I have muliple chronically ill cats.

It is just something else that I personally feel like is not a priority for my
cats, especially since my vet says it's rare.

I treat for fleas for a 90 day period when they have shown their ugly little
heads, but after 90 days I stop.

I also do not vacinate my cats, it is just one more thing to stress out their
fragile immune systems.

They are not allowed outside, and their enclosure is fly proof via pet screen
and I have not seen any mosquitoes, either.

It's just a risk I have to take, and I don't think there is a right answer or
wrong answer here.

However, I do respect your opinion and I certainly understand why you are
concerned about heartworms.

Please keep us updated on the 2 kitties that have heartworms, I would like to
hear how they are in the future.

See, I use Revolution every month, especially on my heart disease

reactions. Not that nerve damage is good, but everything is a
crapshoot it seems. I'd rather have nerve damage than heartworms.

Kelly,

I have in the past discussed heartworms w/ Dr. Smith, and he said he has
seen one case in 40+ years.

I have never seen a case, myself, but I have seen several cats have skin

Re: fleas arhhhhh

2007-08-27 Thread Caroline Kaufmann
I used Revolution on my Monkee for the 4 years that I had him and we never had a skin reaction or any other problems.  I used it because I wanted to kill as many worms as possible because he had been living outside at lease 6 mths and eating a rabbit, a dove, etc. a day (if not more than one per day-- little monster!).
I use Advantage now though on my indoor foster cat and an outdoor neighborhood cat I am treating for fleas.  Advantage is just easier to come by and I heard that Advantage actually keeps the fleas from actually biting; whereas Revolution, the fleas bite first and then die?  Is is this accurate?  I was told by a vet that Advantage is better for cats with actual flea allergies or flea dermatis because those cats can't get even one flea bite.  If I am wrong about this, someone please correct??
I wanted to keep the fleas from actually biting these cats because they seemed so bothered with fleas (scratching and biting ALL THE TIME), whereas, when I had Monkee, he never did that, even in the beginning when he first came in

Advantage works wonderfully tho.  The outdoor kitty, I find her sleeping all the time- whereas before, she had trouble getting restful sleep because of the fleas biting; and she no longer scratches and bites constantly...I can tell that she KNOWS she feels better.  My foster kitty came into my house as a complete flea bag!  She left flea debris all over my bed the first night (ew...I freaked out!).  I put Advantage on her the next day, changed the bed sheets and the very day after, NO FLEA DEBRIS AT ALL.  All I found was 1 dead flea (whoo hoo!).  I believe Advantage starts working within hours.  Very effective.

  Ok folk

I shouldn't panic but I found a few fleas on Junior. I combed out what I
could. It was only 4 fleas and only a little flea dirt. However his vet last
year told me it only takes one flea to cause Haemobartonella. Now that was a
year ago b4 his Felv dx. He was not tested for Haemobartonella, but was put on
antibiotics. I really think the anemia was from the FeLV infection stage. He
was only treated with Baytril for a week, maybe it was two weeks. He has not
had anemia since. Junior is pretty much on his own but occasionally Silver goes
into his room. I am guessing that is where the flea(s) came from. I had not had
fleas on my cats all summer, and yes I check them with a flea comb. This past
week, I started seeing a few so, I have been treating that cats with Advantage.
Junior just got this as well.

I hope Junior will be ok. He is doing so well. Unfortunately I cannot
spray or vacuum Erics room. He is in there 95% of the time due to COPD and
possible polymyositis. His msucle biopsy shoud come back this week. That is
where Junior stays.

I would not treat all year.

I had to treat mine last month and I am going to do it again this week for
fleas, but prior to that I had not treated anyone for 2years.

This is a bad year, too much rain.

Have they been itching @ all?

Have you seen any fleas?

Usually by the time you actually SEE one there are many.

Frontline , Advantage is good, but I would not use Revolution, as as good
forfleas, has Ivermec in it, can cause nerve damage in some cats and skin
reactions.

What protocol do you guys usually follow for your positive cats (who are
exclusively indoor, of course) and flea treatments? I'm sure with the FeLV,
flea bites are even more dangerous. Should I be treating them with
Frontline/Advantage every month year round, monthly during the summer months,
every three months, never?

By the time I would be able to get the Capstar the advantage should have

Michael, I am not sure. Fleas can hitch hike on you, but I would think the

What protocol do you guys usually follow for your positive cats (who are
exclusively indoor, of course) and flea treatments? I'm sure with the FeLV,
flea bites are even more dangerous. Should I be treating them with
Frontline/Advantage every month year round, monthly during the summer months,
every three
months, never?

Also, give all kitties a Capstar,if possible.

This will kill all fleas for what, 24 hours?

  Sally,

Don't feel bad, fleas are particulairly devilish this year due to the rains.

I would give Junoir a flea treatment, either Advantage or Frontline ( not
revolution, doesn't seem to help much for fleas in my opinion).

Once he is treated, the fleas should begin to die due to biting him.

Probably should treat allof the kitties, tho.

Maybe 3 months in a row.

Wash his bedding, that's where most of the eggs are hanging out probably.

Unfortunately I cannot spray
or vacuum Erics room. He is in there 95% of the time due to COPD and possible
polymyositis. His msucle biopsy shoud come back this week. That is where Junior
stays.
