Re: Brenda Smith
Hi everyone,I am just in shock over this. I knew Brenda's last evaluation for her heart had been fine, and I didn't know she had been ill. Brenda was a wonderful person and I will miss her very much. I got to know her from babysitting Lovey and Merry before they moved on to Wisconsin. I spoke with her on the phone several times but never got to meet her in person. I read the message earlier this week and have not really known how to react. It seems somehow strange to be so attached to someone I've ony known online or on the phone, but I was very overwhelmed with grief and can only imagine how Brenda's family must feel at this time. Brenda was truly a blessing to everyone who knew her and I will miss her. Janine, please know that you can always contact any of us for help with the cats or anything you need.TonyaBelinda Sauro [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi All,Brenda was indeed a heart transplant and was a longtime survivor. I know I haven't written for a while. Things have been overwhelming lately. But I had to write in for Brenda. She was an angel on earth, so heaven must be shining brightly now. Our little fur angels have a true friend with them now. She will be missed on earth but truly welcomed over the rainbow bridge and on the other side. Brenda lived up on Lake Superior, the far reaches of northern Wisconsin. She was a transplant patient, heart I believe - doing very well for well over a decade. Re: Brenda Smith
I don't remember Brenda posting lately, had she been having complications? I remember that harrowing trip that she and her daughter took to pick up Lovey and Merry and her talking about how well her check up had gone at the time. That was about a year ago. She was quite a lady, she will be sorely missed. I'm so sorry. I saved her poem that she wrote in tribute to felv kitties. It says so much about her. Here it is: I wrote this tribute to all feline leukemia kitties in December, 2000. It is still as true today as it was then. For all who don't know eating cheesecake means a cure has been found for Feline Leukemia. One of the long term listers wrote an email several years ago and said "when they find a cure for this disease, we will all eat cheesecake." The Best of Us a tribute....by Brenda K. Smith He holds their sick bodies The creator of man In his gentle, loving hands As only He can. We question their existence How can they survive Why were they created Should they be alive? What is their purpose Their short life on earth Are they angels to guide us To grant us our worth? Do they teach us great lessons Have our lives been enriched Are these little creatures Our wise teachers in this? They leave us far richer Than when they began Our lives touched so deeply These small companions of man. We seek the great wisdom From the Holy Spirit above Why has He brought us These little angels to love. We may never know The answers we seek Why these tiny bodies Endure such pain until weak. Upon this birthday of Christ We are blessed from above By these angels of light Who have taught us such love. Their presence forever Will abide in our hearts The souls of these beings From us will not part. Some day there'll be joy Part of His master plan No more sickness to endure A well and full life span. Soon our tears will be dried Our sorrow will abate The cure WILL be found And we will eat cheesecake! Oh my I talked to Brenda last year when I was trying so hard to find a home for my Big Boy. We kind of decided to wait until the weather got better but you know how it goes--he got settled in and here he stayed. Brenda was just so kind and helpful. She had a great sense of humor and such an easy going way about her. She seemed to live every day to its fullest and absolutely adored her family, human and animal! I looked up force feeding (never really thought of that) and there is a lot of information about it. If you have a source of good info, I would love to hear about it. It really does not look like the most pleasant of things to do but you do what you gotta do. I have a vet appointment in the next couple of days, I will talk to her about it. the good news is that I found something zuzu seems to be interested in eating (atleast for now) and even better news is that my other kitty Violet does not seem to like it. I gave her some spot stew for cats. I use to give it to the dogs but never thought about it for the cats. she is gobbling up the really mushy part of it and leaving the chunks. I am just so glad she is eating something. Hopefully it will last. I also got some the frozen raw food to try if and when this stops working. Please keep her in your thoughts. Brenda and Ticker
Brenda, Thank you so much for taking the time to post your sweet amazing story about Ticker! Not only is it inspirational, but it may save lives!!! That bit about Ticker being bottle fed for six months brought a sad little smile to my face. My angels loved their baba too! I let someone that I respected talk me into weaning them completely off the bottle, even though I wanted to continue until they refused. Never again will I listen to someone else when my heart tells me no! I'd like to send your story to my IBD group, there are so many suffering with this disease that may be encouraged by your story. I've never heard of Booda Mix... There's a woman on the list that has been struggling desperately to find a fiber that will work for her kitty, maybe this is it! Can you tell me more about it? Your story also moved me to finally check out your page, (to get a glimpse of your Ticker). I gasped when I saw your beautiful boy, he looks so much like my beloved Jazz! The life you and your husband have created for yourselves is my dream come true! Could I come live with you? Thank you again, Nina
Re: Deirdre interferon - Brenda
Brenda - I'm happy to hear Lovey and Merry are doing well. Give them some neck scratches for me. Del - Original Message - From: Brenda K. Smith To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Tuesday, July 26, 2005 12:36 AM Subject: Re: Deirdre interferon - advice needed Kathy. I have three positive cats on the human (Alpha A) Interferon. I give 1 ml daily which is the newest protocol as far as I know. The research found that Interferon does not stay in the body long and by using 7 days on and then 7 days off, the effects are being negated on the 7 days off, hence the daily dose of Interferon. I have been using the daily dosage for three years with my Peri. He is at least 9-1/2 years old (I've had him for 7-1/2 years) and has absolutely no symptoms of FELV. I adopted two more Felv+ cats from the Athens, GA area, where they still use gas chambers to put to sleep at their shelters, last February and have them both on a daily dose. I would HIGHLY recommend the daily dose of 30 units which equals 1 ml daily. Keep it refrigerated and squirt toward the back of the throat slowly. It is absorbed through the mucous membranes at the back of the throat. I get my Interferon from Island Pharmacy. They are based in Wisconsin about 90 miles from me. In winter I pay $40.00 for 100 ml and $7 or $8 for shipping since I get it next day or in 2 days with cold packs. When I have my vet write for all three cats, then I get 300 ml for $44.00. When the pharmacy can mix more of the Interferon in the batch it costs less, but you have to have the prescription in all three names. I had to just reorder for my three and even though they are close to me because it has been so hot, I had to pay for overnight shipping which was $18 something I think. If I were you I would ask your vet to write a script for 100 ml at a time and give it 1 ml every day. Unless I read new research that suggests giving daily is not the protocol to use, I will continue to do so. Right now my three are healthy, happy and act like normal wonderful cats. Peri is at least 9-1/2 years, Lovey is about 1-1/2 years and Merry is around 2 years. My very best to you and Deirdre. I hope she has many, many wonderful years with you. :)-- Brenda. http://www.whiskersandwicks.com http://www.cheqnet.net/~bksmith "The only risk you ever run in befriending a cat is enriching yourself." - Colette Don't Take Your Organs To Heaven. The interferon itself only cost $28, but the shipping was $22. After 4 days on it, her lymph nodes under her chin have gotten much smaller. They've been enlarged since a month ago when she had a cold. I was amazed that there was an improvement so quickly. My vet and I are unsure whether to do the "7 days on 7 days off" routine with the interferon or just give her 1 ml a day forever. What are you folks doing? What do you think works best? Re: Brenda, Lovey, and Merry, and Cherie
Tonya, Thanks for asking, I did get Sprinkles today...it was a long boring ride to Wisconsin, but we made it through. I had my vet check her out and he said it looks like an injury not ringworm. I am not sure if I can explain it, she is a silver Persian and on her tummy by her left leg is brownish and her left thigh is a brownish, like possible new hair growth, way to big to be ringworm unless she was infested by it. I do not know why she could not have told me it was a injury, she also gave me Fulvicin capsules to give in the moring and night, but again why would she be treating it like this. Spinkles is a little skittish and has not eaten yet either not nearly as lovey as Sugar, but we will work on that. Hopefully I can get her to stay long enough to snap a picture...then I will figure out how to post it or ask James. Again thanks for asking Cherie I have to go to bed.
