[Felvtalk] Donatello - Leuk positive cat in PA
The rescue where I volunteer recently took in a stray that tested positive for leukemia. We are looking for a loving home for him. I have pictures if anybody is interested and his information is on Facebook and on our website. He is one handsome fella! https://www.facebook.com/AnimalServiceLeague http://www.animalserviceleagueny.org/ Donatello was found as a stray. He is a large, male, black and white spotted cat. Upon testing, he was found to be positive for feline leukemia. This test has been confirmed by further blood work. He is estimated to be about four years old and is a big, truly friendly, and affectionate cat. He is VERY sweet and full of personality! He is in need of a loving, permanent indoor home with other leukemia positive cats or in a home with properly leukemia vaccinated cats. Although he has been accustomed to outdoor life, he is currently in indoor isolation away from other cats and would be very happy to have more freedom and friends. He just cannot be outside anymore where he could expose or infect other cats. His eyes are bright and he appears healthy and is active. We have neutered him and completed his vaccinations. If you are interested in a special needs cat, please consider Donatello. We will do whatever we have to do to find him a safe place! Thanks!Amy ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

Amy--re my email yesterday saying I could take the Rochester, NY cat---haven't heard back from you--can you let me know anything? I'll be out of town with no email contact after noon tomorrow Friday 9/2 until Wednesday 9/7. There's also another cat (Illinois) that I've heard of that needs a home or will be euthanized that I will take instead if the Rochester cat has found a homeI'm holding off till I hear about the Rochester cat as the email you sent indicated he'd been given even less time before euthanization than the IL cat. I have been feeding feral/homeless cats for over 3years now, every single morning at 5:30 am. I have seen quite a fewdifferent animals, but the one I am now speaking ofjust came about last Tuesday. After putting the foodand water out, this cute cat let me come close to it,then actually allowed me to scratch his head. As Istarted to get up, he sidled up to my leg and startedto follow me back to my car. The next morning, I didnot see him, but on Thursday, with cage in the backseat and a towel to grab it with, he allowed me topick it up and I brought it home to my back bedroom, where, although a bit frightened, he let me pet himand he gobbled up food. His demeanor is sweet. At first, I thought itcouldn't be homeless due to its sweet way, but thegreasy coat, and matted fur, and malnourished bodythat the veterinarian told me told me this morning ithad, con! vinced me otherwise. At home I took awashcloth and tried to bathe it the best I could. Heeven has started to play with strings. I had made an appointment for it on Monday, today, the22nd of August for its shots and neutering. I havesix other cats whom I have rescued over the years. Iwas planning on trying to find a home for this onebecause as you know, its hard on the other cats in thehouse - especially when they are all so territorialalready! I brought the homeless kitty in this morningand the vet immediately called me to say they had ittested and it has feline leukemia. Which broke myheart. I called Humane Society as I have heard ofsanctuaries for these cats. They referred me to JudyNewman. The reason this breaks my heart the most, is that thiscat is less than a year old, has very beautiful green, loving eyes, purrs for me, plays with me, loves to beheld and rub his nose against your face. He is also! litter trained. He is like a black/brown stripedmedium to long haired beauty. I love him already somuch, but know I can't keep him with the other cats inthe house. The vet did the neutering procedure this morning, andgave him his rabies and distemper shot. They alsocleaned his mats out of fur. I had him scheduled for4 pm. to be put to sleep, but then received the callfrom Judy an hour ago saying there may be hope, withyou. And I know that is a slight chance, but Amy, youhave no idea how much you have helped already, knowingsomeone out there cares about something that theyhaven't even seen. If you had by now, you would be inlove. He is just the sweetest. I called the vet andasked them to give him the name "Homey" for now, sothat he at least will have had a name in his shortlife. RE: Leuk Positive Cat
Re this poor cat, Homey, that's doomed to die Wednesday unless a home is found, do we/does anyone have a comprehensive list of shelters/sanctuaries in the US that take FeLV cats? Any names we can pass on to Judy and Amy? Or is this a dumb thing to ask since she/they will already have contacted everyone? I've put a call through to someone who may have some leads but any I hear of will probably be in the Midwest. Sorry to always be dropping these on you guys but I just got married and then came home and adopted 2 more cats (1 FIV+ and 1 FeLV+) the next day. I'm out of room and I wanted to write and see if anybody can take this cat. I'll set up transport if anybody has room for him. Here is a copy of the e-mail I got about him. I also have pictures of him that I will send to anybody that is interested. I need to find somebody within a couple days or she will be euthanizing him. (copy of e-mail) Dear Amy: Per Judy Newman's (Habitat for Cats?) request, I am writing you to ask for your help, if you are able to at all. You have no idea how much I appreciate the work you do for animals. You are an angel. Judy asked me to give you as much information about this cat as I could. I have been feeding feral/homeless cats for over 3 years now, every single morning at 5:30 am. (before the owners get there, as they are not the nicest people when it comes to compassion for these animals), through rain and snow, behind Lorraine's Restaurant on Culver and East Main. I have seen quite a few different animals, but the one I am now speaking of just came about last Tuesday. After putting the food and water out, this cute cat let me come close to it, then actually allowed me to scratch his head. As I started to get up, he sidled up to my leg and started to follow me back to my car. The next morning, I did not see him, but on Thursday, with cage in the back seat and a towel to grab it with, he allowed me to pick it up and I brought it home to my back bedroom, where, although a bit frightened, he let me pet him and he gobbled up food. His demeanor is sweet. At first, I thought it couldn't be homeless due to its sweet way, but the greasy coat, and matted fur, and malnourished body that the veterinarian told me told me this morning it had, convinced me otherwise. At home I took a washcloth and tried to bathe it the best I could. He even has started to play with strings. I had made an appointment for it on Monday, today, the 22nd of August for its shots and neutering. I have six other cats whom I have rescued over the years. I was planning on trying to find a home for this one because as you know, its hard on the other cats in the house - especially when they are all so territorial already! I brought the homeless kitty in this morning and the vet immediately called me to say they had it tested and it has feline leukemia. Which broke my heart. I called Humane Society as I have heard of sanctuaries for these cats. They referred me to Judy Newman. The reason this breaks my heart the most, is that this cat is less than a year old, has very beautiful green, loving eyes, purrs for me, plays with me, loves to be held and rub his nose against your face. He is also litter trained. He is like a black/brown striped medium to long haired beauty. I love him already so much, but know I can't keep him with the other cats in the house. The vet did the neutering procedure this morning, and gave him his rabies and distemper shot. They also cleaned his mats out of fur. I had him scheduled for 4 pm. to be put to sleep, but then received the call from Judy an hour ago saying there may be hope, with you. And I know that is a slight chance, but Amy, you have no idea how much you have helped already, knowing someone out there cares about something that they haven't even seen. If you had by now, you would be in love. He is just the sweetest. I called the vet and asked them to give him the name "Homey" for now, so that he at least will have had a name in his short life. I just called the vet and told them I would be picking up the cat today at 4pm, at least for a few days, and am going to take him home and give him some great meals and loving, until I hear back from you. It never rains but it pours...Just a few minutes after reading Amy's message (Hi Amy...CJ is doing good..) (Jenn...CJ is the big white and black cat that you meet..) I got a message from a person in north east Mass. that already has 50 cats in her house and rescued a friendly starving young boy and then found out he is FeLV/FIV pos... I think my old guys were stressed enough with the AW cats addition and I am afraid to take any more... Can anyone help in the Mass. area??? Tad

Yeah, and while you are reminding MC next weekend... remind me sometime in January, I expect I'll have the time to find (or re-write) all my stuff sometime in mid-winter. Yes, bigger soapbox required! (maybe we should add that to the wish list?) You know, I didn't get a single reply on my dairy farm drop off rant.. maybe I am losing my touch.. then again that northeastrescue list IS kinda slow. Errggg.. this headache is killing me... must get websites all updated... must continue on... I think I'm going to be forced into a break... much to the disappointment of my friend Kara, who has the FIV+ cats from Angel Wings, hers was my last update of the day.. and my head hurts too much to finish it! She has adopted out about half of those cats now! Yeah Kara! Whoo-hooo! (now, if only the webpage reflected that fact) Be back later tonight guys, taking a break, eye strain, ya know? Re: Leuk Positive Cat
research IS finally being done, on a limited basis, i'm told--specifically at ucdavis, and i believe that gloria knows about other studies. of COURSE there's no research! when a problem is best solved by euthanasia, where's the population to study?? and i'm not even concerned with getting TREATMENT options out there so much as information about testing, how contagious it is or isn't, how it's spread--those things that ARE fairly well-documented haven't filtered down yet even! i know i've seen the cited stats about percentages of adult cats who will fight the virus off, how and when to retest, snap v elissa tests--as it is, there is more knowledge about the realities of living with FeLV on this list on any given day than anyplace else in the world, probably. and, when you get right down to it, so WHAT if the "medical" community doesn't believe anything we say? they don't believe anything THEY say about FeLV either, since they don't bother to keep up on what HAS been discovered! (hey, jenn, i think we really need to get a larger soapbox one of these days.) let me try and see if i can find what i wrote--i think i ran it by gloria back then, but don't remember if i did, nor what she had to say even if i did..remind me after next weekend if i forget, someone (5-10 kittens GO TO OTHER FOSTER HOMES NEXT WEEKEND; i'll have a lot more time, and a slight bit more sanity then.) -- MaryChristine AIM / YAHOO: TenHouseCats MSN: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ICQ: 289856892
Re: Leuk Positive Cat
Yes, we DO need something like the FIV article at best friends. Something well written, and with some facts and studies to back the info up. Sad thing is, no one has bothered doing any scientific studies on FELV, so anything we write is just considered "alternative" or "home remedies" to the veterinary community. What we REALLY need is funding for real studies, so we can prove that the things we do HELP. As far as the scientific and medical community is concerned, there is still NO treatment for FELV, because there's no proven studies to back anything we say up. Our experience doesn't mean anything to anyone, we are not vets, and we are not scientists, and we are not "official" enough to count for anything. It's SO frustrating! Still, it would be good to write out, once and for all, the facts about how most adult cats develop natural immunity, and how it's not highly contagious, and about how short the virus lives outside the host, and any number of the things we DO know, for sure, about FELV. I, myself, like you have written the same things over and over again, so many times. It IS a stupid waste of time, and you are absolutely correct, we DO need to "get it together"! Re: Leuk Positive Cat
oh, sigh. do we (that's the collective we) have a basic primer on FeLV--about how many cats throw it off, how vaccinated cats living with positives stay negative, etc--that we can mail off to folks? the best friends' article on FIV is SO clear, so simple, and has saved SO many lives obviously, FeLV is not as simple, but if there was something we all had access to help make people come to reasoned decisions about the cats they so often love, i think it might help we shouldn't have to rewrite it individually each time. on saturday, i spent more than an hour on the phone with a vet from OH. she volunteers at a shelter that has actually KEPT two FeLV kittens for retesting--they're both close to being tested again, and she wanted to know about placement options, alternatives, etc. by the end of the conversation, she was seriously considering just taking the two babies home to her already-vaccinated household, and thanked me for both giving her information she had NOT had before, but also for confirming things she's suspected about how the virus actually works. there ARE people out there willing to listen and able to hear--i think it'd be great if we could work together to come up with something that we all could use i actually wrote up such a piece months ago for a couple of local rescues, but to be honest i don't even have the time to look for it now. any suggestions? links? leads? Leuk Positive Cat
Yet again, somebody has contacted me about helping out a leukemia positive kitty. He is in Rochester, NY but I'm willing to set up transport up to 8-10 hours away.
