Missing Link vs. Brewer's Yeast
Can anyone tell me the difference? I have Brewer's Yeast that I give to my 1 yo foster cat and the outdoor, neighborhood cats. I haven't given Brewer's Yeast to the foster kitties, all just a few months old, because I don't know if I can use it on cats that young? I found Missing Link in the store and remember people talking about using it on this list serve. I read the ingredients and a lot of them seem similar to Brewer's Yeast and in fact, I think Missing Link has nutritional yeast in it. Therefore, I didn't know if I could use both at the same time? I don't want to over-supplement my cats, but I am trying to really boost their immune systems and kind of reverse some of the damage that was done to their little teeny systems by being orphaned so young (some should still be nursing), spending time at Animal Control and being exposed to diseases, and all having URIs. Any insight is greatly appreciated and I am sorry if this is a repetitive post! Thanks, Caroline Gear up for Halo® 3 with free downloads and an exclusive offer.

Re: Missing Link vs. Brewer's Yeast
Brewer'sYeast Nutritional yeast are similiar, except that the Nutriotional yeast (which I use) has more iron in it. That's why I just give it to them every other day. The Missing Link has the Spirolina in it and other natural veggies herbs. I use both, so far no problems. If they get alot of b vitamins, they are water soluble anyway and they will pee them out. Same as w/vitamin c. Susan J. Papillon is a very macho kitty, he was an un neutered tom that was dumped @ the local pound. A scrapper' ;) My vet clinic is so used to naming my cats for me (I'm outta names, I just say Name 'em !), they had some other named picked out. I said, 'Oh, no, this one is Papillon! They didn't think the name suited him or was macho enough. I gently reminded them of Steve MacQueen.. :) Probably was before some of the youngins' @ the clinics time, tho. Anyway, he is Pappy for short, of course. Handsome flamepoint Balinese. Quite stuck on himself, too. Susan J. Re: OT: Brewer's Yeast
I use it for myself and for the kitties. I buy it in the form nutritional yeast at the health food store. It's tasty - I put it on noodles and so forth for seasoning. And, I also at times sprinkle it on the kitty dry food. It's got B vitamins, in particular. I don't measure it, just kind of sprinkle it on - a shaker thing would be good. Sometimes i just get a spoonful and apply it that way. Re: OT: Brewer's Yeast
Yes, this helps. The directions say you can sprinkle it on dry food with a little water so I did that this a.m, with the outdoor street kitty and she seemed to LOVE the food. But then, she's being fed a mixture of Eagle Pack Kitten dry food and Wellness' new Core dry food (which is supposed to be based on a raw food diet), so who knows?!? I just sprinkled a tiny bit on because the cats I am giving it to are all under 9 lbs. Thanks. Re: OT: Brewer's Yeast
Hi Caroline, First, thank you and your mother for taking in the emaciated kitty. I'm glad she has an appointment at the vet, but it sounds like she is improving and that with good care hopefully she'll recover completely. There is always the danger of weakened organs from malnutrition, and they don't gain the weight back overnight, but the fact that she's eating more normally and is getting perkier is a very good sign for her. What a smart kitty to have found her way to you! What's her name? I've used Brewer's Yeast in the past for my ferals because it's suppose to help ward off ticks and fleas. I hesitate to mention anything I can't find substantiation on, but I remember some sort of precaution about using it with cats. It could have been something about a build up in their systems. I don't think I'd give it to the skinny girl, there are plenty of alternatives for vita supplements that we know to be safe and more effective, but sprinkling it on the feral's food for parasites seems worth any potential risks. I did a quick Google on it and didn't see any reason not to use it. The following article is geared toward human consumption, but it does suggests using 1 tsp daily for cats, (I think that seems like a lot). http://www.answers.com/topic/brewer-s-yeast?cat=health It also talks about gas and bloating or possible allergic reactions to watch out for. I do remember thinking that the ferals seemed less plagued by scratching when I was using it. You guys were talking about First Born, Transfer Factor and colostrum... I just wanted to remind everyone that they do sell colostrum in health food stores and that can be added to food as well. Misty, the emaciated pregnant girl I took in a couple of months ago is doing very well, (I had her on TF, colostrum, homemade kitten formula and canned/wet kitten food). She's finally started to gain back some weight, and she's even prancing and playing now, (she had babies to deal with so her come-back has been very slow). Bless your hearts for caring, Nina On Aug 8, 2007, at 9:49 AM, Caroline Kaufmann wrote: I hate to do this to you guys again because I know there's been discussion about this before, but who uses Brewer's Yeast and what does it do? I use this for my dogs. Haven't tried it on the cats or kittens. It comes in the tablet form for them as well as the powder. I've been using it for years.
