Yes, I foster for the largest  no-kill shelter in GA.

We have a whole house for FIV kitties. And they do get adopted :)

Beth, I didn't realize you fostered FelV cats.  Thanks for helping
them. I wish more people would.

Maggie and Molly were from a litter of four FelV pos. kittens,
and the other two kittens still appear healthy and active, so I have
my hopes up.  I have two more FelV cats who are 5 years old, and
show no signs of illness, so you are right, they don't always die,
and I could never PTS a healthy appearing FelV cat or kitten.

Thank you Beth. It is very hard, but I knew when I started this rescue
work and made a section of my building into a place for FelV cats I'd be
in for a lot of heartache. However it is very heart warming to give these

Yesterday was a sad day I had my beautiful, sweet calico kitten,
Maggie, euthanized.  She was only 9 months old. Her sister, Molly, was
euthanized last month, and they are buried side by side in the woods next
to our house. I took in this litter of 4 FelV kittens in July knowing
they'd probably all die, and consequently break my heart, but I had room
in my FelV sanctuary so I wanted to give them a chance, and they had 9
happy months living in the upstairs of my large rescue building in town.

I watched them running thru their rooms, scooting thru the tunnels,
climbing up the cat posts, and walking across the wall walks which were
built just for them, and they were happy kittens. Their three rooms upstairs
were all made into a cat play ground and also had second hand furniture below
the walk ways where I could sit and cuddle them or they could sleep. They had
a good life, and longer than they'd have had if I hadn't taken them in from
the person who was going to have them PTS because of the FelV virus.

For 8 months they seemed to be in perfect health, and I actually believed
they'd be fine, but then Molly, who was also a calico, got sick. Maggie
still seemed fine but a bit more quiet, but within a week or so she went
downhill fast. Two of the precious kittens from this litter are still
with us, and so far they seem in good health, but for how long?  No doubt
I'll be in tears again when this horrible virus over takes them.

Lorrie, I'm in tears for you and the kittens. You are such a wonderful, caring
person. My Desi, a colony cat got sick several months ago. We didn't even know
he was FeLv+. He was around 6 years old. No one in the colony was ever sick.
Don't know what happened to Desi. His sister Lucy was killed by a car when she
was very young but Desi grew to be a lovely, happy sleek black cat. Then my
friend noticed that he was losing weight a few months ago, took him to a vet.
He tested positive for leukemia and chronic anemia. Vet said he wouldn't last
more than a couple of weeks. I took him in because I have a room reserved for
emergency cases. He actually began to eat like a little porker and gained a bit
of weight. I gave him vitamins with iron, formulated in a liquid for cats. He
played a bit also and I thought there might have been hope. Just as I began to
relax and enjoy having him as a "guest", his period of remittance ended, he
lost his appetite and within
a couple of days, simply faded away. The only positive thing was that he
curled up in his box where he always felt safe and secure and went into a
forever sleep. Hope he was having a wonderful dream when he passed. I love you
and all those who rescue these deserving cats. There is so much prejudice
against cats in general that it's close to a miracle to find people who care as
much as  you and other FeLv+ and FIV+ cat rescuers. Feel joy that you gave so
much pleasure to these two kittens. Life is not about quantity, it's about
quality. Hugs.

Spay and Neuter your cats and dogs and your weird relatives and nasty neighbors
too!

Sorry it has taken me so long to send out this thank you. It has been hard

So far Maggie is doing well and the Enalapril has really helped with her

my FIV boy has the exact same diagnosis (found by his going into congestive
heart failure while in ear surgery) - he was diagnosed March 2009 with HCM.  I
give him fish oil and also Only Natural Pets Heart Health formula.  (he is on 2

dr approved this and told me 'don't be surprised if he gets better, and the
condition starts to reverse' - my regular vet and then the cardiologist all
approved the supplement.  At his last ultrasound in May, his heart was showing
improvement, some areas were no longer thickened, and others had not progressed
further.  There can be incidences where it 'looks good' but it's thickening
inward now, if that makes sense, but she was surmising it was really

it's too $ for your taste, read the ingredients and work with a vet to get a

The best thing you can do for her immediately, which many vets will NOT tell
you, is give her CoQ10 - the easiest way is to buy it in powder form in a
capsule, open and sprinkle into food. GNC's vegetarian formula is a good one
- others come in gelcaps filled with oil. I routinely give it to all the
FIV/FeLV+ cats in their food. Natalie

Hello Tanya,

HCM is tough. In people it's often hereditary and treated with ACE
inhibitors (like enalapril), beta blockers (sotalol, metropolol, etc.) and/or
diuretics (lasix), and sometimes aspirin or other agent to inhibit blood
clots. Transplants are used in certain situations.

My understanding is that with cats you can also use any of the above
mentioned meds, using caution with aspirin. I think sometimes that
conventional medicine is limited and natural or alternative methods can
sometimes help. I found a small amount of information on it that you could
maybe research or ask your vet or simply try. I'll copy and paste it here:

  Natural Remedy Options

One of the most effective natural remedies is proper diet and exercise.
.
There is no pill that cures this problem as of now but researchers and
scientists are always working on towards a cure. Until then there are simple
things that can be incorporated in your cat’s daily diet that will help
them.

There are medicines to consider to thin the blood and stop the enlargement
of the heart wall. Aspirin (low doses that are safe for felines), diuretics
and a beta blocker are popular for this condition. Check with your vet about
the aspirins as some cats may be able to handle it but others can not! If
your cat is sensitive to aspirin try Nattokinase instead.

As far as the daily diet, quality foods can make the difference in your cat
(quality foods not commercial foods). Commercial foods tend to have a lot of
salt which can be very bad for this condition. Homemade meals are a lot
better. Foods high in taurine have a positive effect as well as organic
foods with broccoli and oats. Cooked liver can provide essential nutrients
to help your cat feel better.

When considering supplements the following have been known to support health
and longevity in cats with Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy:

• Vitamin E oil

• B-Vitamins

• Hawthorne berry

• Dandelion leaf

• Fish oil

• Coenzyme Q10

If you are interested in homemade diets there are certainly individuals in
this group that could recommend something. If not let me know and I'll send
you something. Good luck.

Jenny
