Yes I think the damaging dose is 10mg or more. -Original Message- From: felvtalk-boun...@felineleukemia.org [mailto:felvtalk-boun...@felineleukemia.org] On Behalf Of gary Sent: Wednesday, April 07, 2010 12:13 AM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] day 9 of baytril Last report I read on it said all the reported incidents of blindness were at dosages in excess of the recommended dosage. Yes Baytril of for the UTI not the FelV, and it would be scary using Baytril for that long when you read about cats going blind. Why don't you compromise and finish up the ten days, and if the UTI returns ask the vet for an alternative drug. I used Clavamox for one of my cats with a UTI. Re: [Felvtalk] day 9 of baytril
Frankie did go blind. He had lots of baytril as a kitten when the vet was treating asthma as an URI. It's the high doses that are the concern. You might do a google search. My vet tells me he had the lower doses but he had repeated doses. His blindness could be the baytril or genetic. No one can tell me for sure. Re: [Felvtalk] day 9 of baytril
OK, what is your name and what is your cat;s name. It helps me keep people straight. You will want to bookmark this site http://www.marvistavet.com/html/enrofloxacin.html This is was it says about Baytril and blindness. "Retinal damage has been seen in cats when higher doses (such as might be used to treat a Pseudomonas ear infection) are used. This reaction is not common even with very high doses, but there is no way to predict which cats will react. Blindness, temporary or permanent, can result. This reaction has only been reported with enrofloxacin and not with other fluoroquinolones, as it is theorized that the biochemical structure of enrofloxacin leads to especially high concentrations in the feline eye (in other words, this reaction is theoretically possible with any fluoroquinolones but enrofloxacin is especially predisposed to causing this reaction)." Yes blindness has occurred but in very high doses. That is not what you are dealing with. Baytril can cause blindness but it is a rare complication. I have had many cats on it and none has ever gone blind.
