From the little I looked around, I think its not at all uncommon for shelters to be ‘closed’. I was referred to a gentleman who takes in FELV cats—was given only his phone #. When I called him, he told me he had ‘many’ cats, (would not say how many) in his house but would not tell me where. He apparently is used by a number of rescue groups in this area for FELV cats but meets them in PETCO parking lot to get the cats. He had some legitimate reasons for not wanting visitors, (afraid people would just dump cats) but I was amazed that none of the people who recommended him had ever seen his place. He may have been great but who would ever know! Yes, I made it very clear in my post that my Felix went to Angel's Gate in L.I., N.Y. I also stated Victor & Susan are marvelous and their sanctuary/hospice is IMMACULATE! In fact, one of the first things Felix did was to jump on their bed, covered w/ a white spread! With his IBD, I was so panicky he'd leave a mess... Victor's reply, "That is why God invented washing machines! I was at ease at once. ANGEL'S GATE is a prime example of what a sanctuary should be! Patti

i have to say that it almost looked like an abandoned property--like things were left that way when they moved out. a lot of folks don't clean up when they leave a place, and tossing old food bags and departed cat-trees looks a lot like that before final clean-up no explanation i can think of for the dead critters, tho trashing all sanctuaries and/or shelters does NO one any good; i'll repeat what i said about kittykind a week or so ago--we do not have all the facts, and there are realities to running a sanctuary environment that are beyond the experience of most cat-companions. i also need to add here that i don't know of ONE sanctuary that hasn't been bashed in the past by at least one person or group--and often based on nothing more than rumors. one REALLY does need to know the agenda of the folks doing the bashing sometimes my biggest concern is that what she wrote to jenn and what's in the article about there not being FeLVs is absolutely untrue. there may not be any NOW, but i know of many groups and individuals who took FeLVs there when no one was accepting them. i do know of ONE person (possibly a second, even--have to check on that one)--who WAS allowed inside the house (which was only one of her facilities, SUPPOSEDLY)--my friend was bringing a FeLV to her from a long distance, and at the point there was a separate room inside the house for FeLVs. bottom-line, unfortunately, is that until and unless more people are willing to step up and help these undesirables, this is gonna keep happening. Tad, I would agree with you..up to a point. The clutter mess...not good...not as bad as a small cage, but then..you can't really CLEAN around clutter...so not only do you have to view the clutter, but what its hiding. Yeah, there were lots of food bags laying around, and yes it was quality food and cats like to play in those bags...but...what were the bags laying on top of? What unsanitary conditions were they obsecuring. The rotting corpuses were the kicker tho. Those weren't animals that had been just expired...esp. the dogs, those were bodies that had been laying for days, weeks, the one cat and esp. the dog skull...for months or more. IF the bodies were laying around for weeks...were they feeding the animals around the dead bodies...or not feeding the animals so they didn't notice the dead ones? And if they aren't going to pick up and toss a dead animal, you can be SURE they aren't washing the food bowls or water bowls. And the cat feces in the one room was absolutely uncalled for. Thanks, I try! I almost lost it all, I was in a panic... my mouse driver died after about an hour of doing all that research, and I almost lost all the info (I couldn't mouse up to hit the send button, or save it as a draft). Luckily, I was able to use my arrow keys and tabs key to open a notepad file, and when I went to my task manager to restart my computer, it automatically pops up a warning box when you have an open text file saying "would you like to save the current changes to blahblah.txt file? And I was able to tag to the yes button, and click my space bar to save it! LOL, there for a few minutes I was in an absolute panic... I'm just glad my computer didn't do a total lock up this time! ;-)~ I really need a new computer, this thing has so many bugs. I just would rather use that $300-$400 to save a cat, rather than buying myself a computer! It's really amazing what I can do on this old home made dinosaur! Right now, it has no sound, sometimes when it boots up, I get sound, other times I don't... maybe my sound card is on it's last legs. LOL! I'm gonna re-boot after I get done with all my email and try to get my sound back on. I was also still trying to find an email address for the McCluen guy when it died, still got to try to get that...
