The view menu has a function for customizing the tool bar in dialogue boxes.
This information is supplementary to what others are offering, also.
The view menu in the finder also has several ways to organize folders. It has
shortcuts for navigating through various view within a dialogue box.

I periodically go through the finale tutorial for simple entry and come out the
other end still not being quite up to speed about the caret. It always seems to
work in the tutorial for me but never afterward.

Using the MIDI playback instrument list. Click the triangle to the left of each
staff name: staff 1; staff 2, etc. and you will expose the list of layers and a
couple of other parameters that can be assigned to various channels, patches,
etc.

My instrument list is set for all instruments. I rummaged around in the
MIDI/Audio menu item MIDI setup until I examined the output source for
softsynth settings which listed two sources: Default Output, and Built-in
Output.
I tried the input both ways and discovered the following to be true
