I have been able to open one not too complex FM2012 document in FM2014.
However I mostly get messages like these:
While attempting to access “KB Koral basis 2012.mus” the File Manager reported
an error.
While attempting to access “EnigmaTemp-1449746605” the File Manager reported an
error.
Probably not a great answer, but assuming you have 2012 still installed,
you could save as MusicXML, and open in 2014 that way. Once open in
2014, you could probably save it is 2012 format successfully if you
wanted to do that. Of course you will lose some formatting through the
MusicXML
After a reboot, does the same problem occur?

I may have found a reason for the problem:
In 2006 I bought the then best Mac Pro desktop, which is still my main
workhorse for all serious work also in Finale. It is fast enough for smooth
playback, redraws sufficiently fast, and with its two video cards it allows me
to run four monitors: one
I've had my problems with 2012, especially a lot of the seemingly random
and arbitrary assignment of tool names and some familiar functions. But
from what I'm hearing, I'm going to hold off on 2014.
I'm still trying to get 2012 to behave.

The single best thing you can do for your MacPro is move the system to a SSD.
Or do a Fusion drive on it. My 2008 MacPro takes about 20 seconds to boot.
Second thing you can do is install 10.8 or 10.9. It requires a little bit of
work, but it is totally possible. You need to install Chameleon
I have 2012c working pretty well, and this
discussion has convinced me that this is no time
to be an early-adopter of the new one... I will
let these experts debug it first!

Those artifacts are hidden notes for the playback effect. If you go to
View Show and uncheck Hidden Notes and Rests, do they disappear?
Thanks!

I don't disagree with you Eric, only I am not sure it is worthwhile considering
my planning, which is about getting a new Mac Pro with SSD in a year or so. I
am no code freak and don't really want doing all the workarounds to optimize
this old computer. What i have of work capacity should go
There is really no reason for a music person to get a forthcoming macpro.
It's simple to add an SSD. And then you simply clone your drive to it.
Instead of taking 2 minutes to startup, it will take 20 seconds.
Instead of 60 seconds to launch a program, it will take 6.

Good advice, the artifacts disappeared after a forced redraw.
If only the inability to open the FM2012 files could be solve equally easy.
Thanks!
