[Finale] Sibelius to Finale

2008-07-08 Thread Eric Fiedler

I know this has been discussed many times on this list, but ...
A client has just sent us a huge Sibelius file to be worked on. What
is the best way to get it into Finale with as much detail as possible
being saved in the transition? (so a MIDI-solution would only be a
solution if all else fails ...)
Thanks in advance for any bits of collective wisdom you could send
this way.

If all you have is the file, MIDI may be your best choice, or you might
find a Sibelius user who will print the file to PDF and return it to you
so you can scan it. If you want, contact me privately and I'll do that
for you.

If you have Sibelius, you could buy the Music XML plug in from Recordare
http://www.recordare.com/default.asp to convert the file to Finale's
format. This is your best choice. Otherwise you might find a Sibelius
user with the Music XML plug in to convert it for you or you might try
printing the file and then scanning.

Hope that helps

[Finale] OT: Mac software for webpage design

2008-07-08 Thread Johannes Gebauer
I am a little out of touch with current Mac software, which easy to use
web designer is recommendable? Would it be worth getting the Apple
software package?

I have used Adobe GoLive in an old OS 9 version, and, to be honest, it
was actually too powerful, or rather, too complicated for my needs. I'd
love something which will give me a good template design where I only
have to add my texts and graphics.

I need to update my webpages, but haven't got much time to do it.

Sorry if this is too off-topic, reply privately if you like.

Apple's iWeb is extremely basic, but it may be enough for your needs.
I'm happy with Freeway from http://www.softpress.com : there are two
versions, Pro and Express, which you can try as free downloads
(limited to a month, I think). Even the Express version gives you
more power than iWeb.

Just to clarify, you use the MusicXML plug-in from Recordare to save as
a MusicXML file from Sibelius and then you open the MusicXML file in
Finale. This will transfer most of the data (but not all!).

I just wanted to be sure that Eric doesn't think that the MusicXML
plug-in will actually convert to Finale's format (.mus), since it won't.

That's the most accurate method I know of for transferring between the
two programs.

Hi Eric,

You'll get the best results using the Sibelius dolet from Recordare
for export from Sibleius and use
the latest Finale Dolet from Recordare (not the Finale built XML
import) for import into Finale.

Contact me off list if you need help.

[Finale] Finale] Cheap, easy notation apps?

2008-07-08 Thread Daniel Wolf
I can second the recommendation to look into Harmony Assistant. While it
is not as flexible with regard to graphic editing and output as one would
like to be, it is a very interest environment in which to produce music,
and is, perhaps, the shape of things to come in a future generaiton of
programs.

Further encouraging some diversity in our field, may I note two
less-expensive programs: Lime ($65) can handle most small projects and
has a few interesting built-in features, for example a tuning table,
defining a pitch bend for each of 35 combinations of notes and accidental,
and also a really easy way to do non-alligned measures -- perfect for
Ockeghem. Turandot ($165) is a nice little program made in Hungary with
output rather close to that of the Editio Musica Budapest (wouldn't it be
great -- if only to avoid software monocultures -- if every country had
their own viable notation program?) and extremely robust if limited in
features. Turandot got off to a bad start due to legal threats from
another notation program, but it has an easy-to-use interface and should
be able to meet most non-professional requirements.

If the user does not require playback, then the free and open source
Lilypond is useful for more modest and conservative notation projects. If
the user is in Linux, then coupling (also free and open source) Rosegarden
with Lilypond is a possibility, but again best for more modest and
conservative projects.

[Finale] Re: Sibelius to Finale

2008-07-08 Thread Michael Good
Hi Eric,

As Richard and David have mentioned, MusicXML is the most accurate way
to transfer files between Finale and Sibelius. If you have Sibelius as
well as Finale, you can use the Dolet 3 for Sibelius plug-in yourself.
Otherwise, the person with the Sibelius file will need to be the one
to use it. You use the plug-in to export a MusicXML file from Sibelius
that Finale can then open. For the most accurate results, use the
Dolet 4 for Finale plug-in to open the MusicXML file, but Finale
2008's built-in MusicXML import does a good job as well.

There is a video that demonstrates this process in comparison to MIDI
files at:

  http://www.recordare.com/sibelius/video/dolet3sib.html

The plug-in is available for purchase at:

  http://store.recordare.com/dolet3sib.html

Best regards,

Michael Good

iWeb is a little limited though very easy to use. It depends on how
fiddly and fussy you want to be.

I am a big fan of Freeway - though it costs a bit (mid-range), it works
like a desktop publisher (as does iWeb) and is capable of some quite
good things quite easily.

[Finale] copying from existing file to make condensed scores

2008-07-08 Thread Patrick Sheehan
I am trying to finish a jazz chart, but am having major problems in making a
condensed score.
The full score is already finished, and I am making a condensed score at the
music director's request. This particular chart is a clarinet solo feature (a
la Pete Fountain), and therefore the solo part is black with notes and instead
of re-typing the solo part in all over again, I copied and pasted about 4 bars
at a time. Problem is, when I play back the condensed score, it'll always
stick at the pre-process, and never play, so I have to end up shutting down the
program. I start all over again, and the same problems happens at some time or
another. Lots of wasted time and effort so far. Any other ideas? I don't
know if I'm the only person this has happened to...

Re: [Finale] copying from existing file to make condensed scores

2008-07-08 Thread Don Hart
Hi Patrick,

I'm not sure what all needs to be done for your condensed score. Seems it
might help if you tried doing a 'save as' of the complete score and
move/combine things as needed for your new file. At least the solo would be
in place, and if the full score plays back, chances are this new file should
as well.

I have very few playback problems, and I can't think of when they are not
file specific. Can't tell for sure, but if the full score plays that would
be my guess.

Best,

Don
