I think the main pre-requisite should be some knowledge of the concept OOP.
It's a well written book, but OOP can be hard to grasp at times.
If you worked with classes etc using AS 2.0 you should be fine with this
book.

I have this book and am half way through it. Having flipped ahead in the
book I can say this. The first two-thirds of the book focus on OOP, class
architecture, and patterns. The last third of the book talks more to
specific AS3 implementation.
With that said, I find it to be a very valu
actionscript cookbook is out. moock's as3 book is partially
available as pdf through safari rough cuts.

They probably are more concerned with your knowledge of 'compiling AS3'. If
you know AS2, then you're good to go! I figured out AS3 when flex 2 was in
alpha. Not much to it, if you know any java/C#/javascript-like language
(what, Algol-based?).
