RE: [Flashcoders] are the wheels off the Flash Player wagon?

There is a form to let the BMW Webmaster know of your poor experience with the
detection script:

I'm afraid they dont validate the Flash player There is no code in
that page (client side) to do this I think it's a fix message !

This is AFTER it checked my player, so I should have went right to the
microsite. At first, it was not obvious to me that I could proceed
despite the "warning" and I moved on since I was not going to
downgrade.

I'm not complaining about Macromedia or the plug-in, just the state of
affairs in general.

Overall, the express player install to upgrade from 7 to 8 works
pretty well. A little convoluted, going to Macromedia to confirm the
update then popping back open a browser with the original destination,
but it does seem to work pretty well.

Sigh.

The more things change, the more things seem like 1996.

What's funny, or not so funny, the bigest websites are the worst offenders.

I'm a small developer and I get raked over the coals for the stupidest
things and then I go to a big boy site and get junked up.

I use Express Install to force people to upgrade to FP8, mostly because I
love the way the fonts look, and I am going to use the new video codec. I
get light traffic, and I just up and change my whole website every so often,
so, it's not really something I want to do - develop an FP7 and an FP8
website.

The ubiquitous player will never be realized. :(

Ok cool, I think I missed your point the first time ;-) Looking back it is
there plain as day. The BMW website engineers are asleep at the wheel!

I know that FP8 can do FP7, but the net effect is, websites are out there
messing up viewer access/experiences over dodgy detection scripts.

Actually, I kept messing with it and it let me continue past the warning,
but it was far from obvious that I could do so.

Re: [Flashcoders] are the wheels off the Flash Player wagon?

2005-10-27 Thread Julian Suggate
Dude, I'm pretty sure that the BMW website does that because of a bodgy
detection script rather than the site actually "requiring" Player7. Player8
can handle anything that Player7 could (aka backwards compatibility). In
pseudocode, it sounds like the detection script is checking that (version ==
7) rather than (version >= 7).
