As Julian said, you may very well very well be the last flex developer left.
And for that matter, the last ColdFusion developer.

It could be a server environment change that is incompatible now with either
Flex or ColdFusion. Technologies change and move on, sorry if that doesn’t
help. Good luck.

Sure, I understand that, but in my world, elearning, I don’t have resources to
develop more than one codebase, and I cannot have a strategy that doesn’t
embrace the iPad, so HTML5 and JS is the answer.

It’s a great shame as I miss a proper OO language, and really liked working
with Flex but it simply does not fly for us.

I’m also very leery about getting caught in proprietary formats as an
ex-authorware developer, and dependent on proprietary technology (i.e. the
flash player) is a risk I no longer want to take.

And further to your point, I think it's naive for someone to assume that
activity on an email list is a reliable indicator of how widely used, or how
"dead" a particular technology is.

I think lists like this will have the highest activity when a technology is a.)
relatively new, and b.) growing rapidly in adoption. Under those circumstances,
a good portion of the developers/users are unseasoned and unfamiliar, so they
turn to email lists for help. Kind of like it was with Java and J2EE (Servlets,
EJB's EARs, etc.) between, say, 1997 and 2001. All of the Java lists I once
subscribed to (and probably still do) are now dead. But Java, and JEE, are
obviously far from dead. It's just that anyone who is now new to Java
development probably has ready access to seasoned experts on their own team. Or
they can find answers through google because the lists are indexed or the
questions have already been answered on stackoverflow.

I work on a very large flex application that runs within a web page. Most of
the functionality is built within the flex application, but it does communicate
to the server to get data and post results.

I'm in the process of moving all this to a combination of restful web services
written in C# and Javascript on the client. For the client my plan is to use
Dojo. Moving a lot of code to javascript scares me since it's not as structured
as actionscript or other compiled languages, but I really see no other choice.

The main point I want to make is that I love Flex. I love how you can write an
application to embed in a web page, then take that same code, put an air
wrapper around it and have it run on mulitple OSes as a stand alone application
with very little work, and believe it or not, it actually works everywhere.

The unfortunate thing is that for web based applications, if you want to
support the IPAD, and your application needs to be embeded in a webpage, you're
screwed. I work for a major publisher that supplies colleges and high schools
web based course management systems and we are getting a lot of pressure to
have our stuff work on IPADs.

For this reason alone, we need to convert to HTML5 and javascript. The main
reason I'm not considering the ZKoss is that my group is a windows group. We
have windows servers and are heavily invested in .Net. I admit the ZKoss stuff
looks nice, but for us, it's really not an option.

IMO, the bottom line is that the IPAD is killing Flex, and unless you're just
writing stand alone applications, you should stop using Flex. It's a shame it's
come to this though.

I have used Flex since 2006, and I have used ZKoss within the last year. I
can tell you that the learning curve of ZKoss is much lower than Flex, and
the development cycle is even faster. In your spare time, if you're curious
like me and like to check out different technologies, give it a whirl, just
so you'll have a good comparison. I think you'll be impressed - even if you
don't ever use it for a project. I think you'll agree that HTML/CSS/JS is not
a faster development environment, regardless of IDE.

Would truly love to hear your assessment of it at some point.

Don't get me wrong. I was always a big fan of Flex and touted its virtues
whenever I could over the past several years. So, I have nothing against it.
I'll be using it for years as I maintain existing projects written in Flex.
But, with respect, I think you do a disservice to continue to tell developers
to use Flex. You are only telling them to build a backlog of projects that
will have to be converted one day. But, I understand you work for Adobe and
can't very well say exactly what you think developers should do.

SWFLoader or Image?

Surely the problem is with Image - or does Image use the paths set by SWFLoader
to resolve its own paths?

I don't see any obvious problem with your setup. Set a breakpoint in
SWFLoader.as:loadContent and watch it try to resolve the URL into an absolute
URL. Maybe there is a clue there.

[flexcoders] Loading Images into a loaded SWF

2010-08-24 Thread Julian Tenney
I asked this a couple of weeks ago, just before I went on holiday.

This is the problem: I have an Air application. That loads a SWF from my
drive soemwhere. That SWF is trying to load an image on a relative path
to the swf. When I run the swf directly, it loads the image fine: when
the swf is loaded into the Air app, it won't load.

When I trace out the ioError event.text I get

Error #2035: URL Not Found. URL: file:///media/DSC_0095.JPG
file:///\\media\DSC_0095.JPG

So the first part of the image file's path is not being set, and I think
this is a bug?

Previously it was suggested this was a Security issue - I don't think it
is as the SecurityError event is never thrown.

Am I being dim?

RE: [flexcoders] Loading Images into a loaded SWF

2010-08-24 Thread Julian Tenney
I don't get why the path that's trying to load isn't the base of the Air
application then? In ioError I get file:///media/DSC_0095.JPG
file:///\\media\DSC_0095.JPG is failing to load. That's not the dir
of the Air app, so are you sure that's what's going on, or have I missed
anything else?

it. How can Flex / Air reliably get a short filename from a long file
path?

Subject: [flexcoders] Flex XML editor

Hi everyone,
I want to create an editor for XML files in Flex. Does anyone know if
there are already existing projects (open-source) that implement this ?
I could not find anything (excepted commercial apps), but I guess
someone already had the need to do that :)

Cheers

[flexcoders] getStyleDefinition

2009-07-21 Thread Julian Tenney
Hi,

Maybe someone can shed some light on this.

I need to get at runtime a list of styles a particular component
supports. I am using the Flex 4 SDK.

I have read about ComponentClass.getStyleDefinition() but cannot get it
to work. I see this is a method inherited from UIComponent, but it
always returns undefined if I trace UIComponent.getStyleDefinition

Is this a Flash only feature or is it also in Flex? Am I missing
something?

Is there any other way of getting a list of supported styles for a
component class?

many thanks,

Jules
