[flexcoders] Questions, Questions

2005-05-04 Thread David Terry

Hello Everyone,

I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to answer
my questions about Flex. Most were basic, new user questions, and I really appreciate
all the help.

I have been researching Flex for an application my company
wants to build and I we have come across a point of contention price.
My company now wants this application to be independent instead of integrated
into a bigger solution, and the idea of hosting is going out the window.

So I have 2 starter questions

 Can a Flex application be
compiled into a SWF file, or made to run independent of the server?
 Does a Flex application need
to be hosted on a Flex server?

Thanks,

David T.

You can save a Flex app to a SWF very
easily:

- open Notepad
- put in this text:

a
href=""right click here to
save/a

- save file as html
- open in browser
- right click to save as SWF

If your Flex server is legal, the SWF won't timeout
either.

This is how Central works with Flex,
too.

Flex server is only a presentation layer that runs on
top of your current J2EE/.NET app. There is no diff
between a flex app and any other J2EE app in the way
the app is deployed...

Per my understanding when develop a j2ee app that uses
Flex as presentation layer, then you'll have to pay
for Flex license in order to deploy the app... and the
price might vary it was 12k/2cpu a while back but
know is more expensive the good news is that MM is
willing to negotiate with you and probably you'll get
something that will work out well for you.

For short I'm afraid that you cannot run a flex app
without paying a runtime license fee... nice huh...
way to go JSF...

In my opinion the cost of the license might be a show
stopper for many small companies that want to
develop/deploy flex applications. In addition to the
license cost you need to consider some unpleasant
limitations this product has and see if for the money
you pay you get what you needwhich probably you
already did.

So, welcome to the dark side...

Yes, and no.

All code that is needed to talk to the back-end is
compiled into the SWF.

However, certain things could cause it not to
work:
- if the SWF is run from a different domain,
security restrictions prevent it from working
- if your back-end requires HTTPS
authentication
- if your back-end does checks to see the referrer,
true domain, a session ID needed for a webservice call beyond a simple login, or
any other check to determine the SWF, and tells the SWF to piss off
- your keep timeouts on, and the SWF times out,
rendering it useless (unless someone has a SWF decompiler and removes the
check)

Correction, after digging in the flex-config.xml
file, SWF's generated from Flex by default use Flex as the proxy for webservice
calls... not sure why. Anyway, you can change the config to generate SWF's
that never use Flex as the proxy and should work on their own.

...what I can't figure out is where is the
"useProxy" proxy attribute the config file talks about? It's not in the
FlexBuilder properties panel, nor the docs for WebService?

Yes, and no.

All code that is needed to talk to the back-end is
compiled into the SWF.

However, certain things could cause it not to
work:
- if the SWF is run from a different domain,
security restrictions prevent it from working
- if your back-end requires HTTPS
authentication
- if your back-end does checks to see the referrer,
true domain, a session ID needed for a webservice call beyond a simple login, or
any other check to determine the SWF, and tells the SWF to piss off
- your keep timeouts on, and the SWF times out,
rendering it useless (unless someone has a SWF decompiler and removes the
check)

2. not having support for BigDecimals; Flex uses ECMA

3. AS2 is not an OO language, and I'm thinking at

4. 32k size limitation. Interfaces with lots of UI

solution is to refactor the code a little bit, but
there is no definitive reason why this is

5. scalability issues - times to time when the apps is

4. Darron Schall said this better on the MTASC list, but it's mainly
because:

if(_global.myClass == undefined)
{
_global.myClass = {};
// initialize rest of class here
}

That if block is limited to 32k of data so if your class has more than that
much data, that's why it doesn't work.

Hi,

This is technically possible (depending on
how you choose to connect to data, it may or may not be the best approach).

However, it is not a standard license.
The product is licensed as a server and requires the license. That said, as
Rick mentions helpfully, our ISV/OEM sales team may well be able to help you
with the license/cost, if you are looking to build an app and sell it to multiple
people. Please contact our ISV/OEM sales team and discuss. If you need a
contact, let me know offline.

[flexcoders] Questions, Questions

2005-04-20 Thread David Terry

Hello Everyone,

First off I am very, very
new to Flex/ActionScript coding like 2 days new, but I am finding this
newsgroup to be a great resource.

Here is my issue

My boss wants an application that will
allow the user to drag drop elements into a container, manipulate any elements
within the container, and save the positioning data (x/y and height/width) of
each child element within the container.

I decided to look into Flex as a
possible development platform to accomplish these goals, but I am having a hard
time finding information. I know I can do the drag drop functionality
into the container, but I havent found information on the rest.

Here are my questions

-

 Can
I reposition elements within the container (using a canvas)? How?
 Drag drop events?
 Can
I get x/y and height/width information from the items within the
 container? How?

Thanks in advance,

David T.

You can freely reposition using drag and drop within a Canvas.
Repositioning involved setting the x and y properties of the object
(or calling the 'move' method).

Can I get x/y and height/width information from the items within the
 container? How?

canvas.getChildAt(index).x = x-position of child at index

Similarly y, width and height...

You can freely reposition using drag and drop
within a Canvas.
Repositioning involved setting the x and y

 container? How?

canvas.getChildAt(index).x = x-position of
child at index

Similarly y, width and height...
