Don't shoot me if I'm wrong, but Apple has definitely not made hosts easy
over the lifetime of OS X. For many versions,
I use MAMP Also. I didn't have to mess with the host file to use localhost.
This may be an obvious question but are you pointing to the correct port? I
think MAMP uses and 8889 by default.

Are you getting this error as part of the Flex Builder install or the
Flash Player Plugin install? When I installed, the Flex Builder install
works fine, but I get an Access Error at the very end of the Flash
