This is a good idea, but I think that we can take it a little further.
What if the PIF attachment automatically uninstalled MSFS and
installed FGFS in its place? Curt would need to upgrade his server to
handle the load, of course, but then we could start sending out the
attachment even to people who do not currently use FlightGear, just to
ease their transition to Open Source.

We should get in touch with Linus and Alan -- they could use this
technique to get Linux better established on the desktop as well.

All the best,

David

Actually, this should be /dev/null if you misspell null you're file
system will probabably fill up rather quickly. (Spoken from personal
 experience.) :-)

Yes indeed, more evidence that it's usually operator error :-)

Especially since Curt's mail filter shouldn't have been running as
root anyway (and thus, should not have had write permissions to
/dev/). Let's all leave the Outlook users in peace for a while and
go after Curt instead.

I have been wondering whether the Outlook autorun feature
could conveniently be used to assist Windows users who would
like to use FlightGear. They sign up for the mailing list

start of subscription mail message has a PIF attachment
that autoinstalls FlightGear. Thereafter, whenever we

Convenient, no ?

May we please put this thread to rest and allow FGFS
to return to soaring above petty OS bigotry

Seconded. FWIW, the discussion is not about OS bigotry.
Anybody can run Outlook (with WINE) on Linux and run most
Linux mail readers on Windows. With the former, a default
Outlook will behave just as badly on Linux, and, with the
latter, most casual users will have trouble with attachments.

please do so silently.

Hehe, Several years ago when the windows email virus/worm stuff
started to become popular, I saw a similar proposal (that actually
sounded quite plausible) for installing linux on the person's machine
via this outlook email hole.

Fortunately, it appears that the linux people that are sharp enough to
pull this off have more useful/ethical things to do.

But I suppose that would be one way to fight the market share
wars. :-)
