[Flightgear-devel] --lon= --lat= --altitude= --heading= --pitch= --roll=

2010-01-23 Thread Martin Spott
Whoever might care, I'd like to report about my current findings with
using the command line switches --pitch= and --roll= - which don't
have any effect on my setup (current CVS, running on Linux). To be
precise, this command line:

  # ~ fgfs --lon=-122.050490 --lat=37.417342 --altitude=755 --heading=251
--pitch=-23 --geometry=1152x870 --timeofday=noon --aircraft=ufo

should provide a nice view onto a scene at KNUQ. All of the above
switches work as expected, just --pitch= and --roll= don't.

Cheers,
Martin.

That makes me wonder, is it a JSBSim aircraft or a YASim aircraft (and
does another plane using a different FDM have the same problem)?

 Hi,

For the 727-230 Lufthansa livery and Cruzeiro livery were textures used found
 on www.cgtextures.com.

In my eyes the licences allowed me to use the textures, but their FAQ says
now no to OpenSource, and another OpenSorce engine (OpenArenea) ran into
trouble, as I found out today.

So please remove the complete file before the Release of FGFS 2.0.0, I hope
to get a GNU GPL-compatible replace soon!

Maybe this can be done by removing the rights to read from that
directory at the CVS server side (or something)? It would be a pitty to
remove everything and add it back later.

Or maybe it's good enough to replace the texutures with plain white
images for now?

I hate to be the messenger here, but I think it's really obvious that these
textures have to be removed from CVS completely including any history. Because
otherwise one could just checkout an older version of the textures to get them
thus we would be distributing them, which is explicitly not allowed by the CG

It's the UFO.

I might try to check wether the FDM has any influence, but using a
'real' aircraft for a test might not yield reasonable results because
starting in-air is always a little bit 'indeterministic' (at least
according to my experience).
Aside from that, I'd assume that setting a pitch for the viewer should
be pretty independent from the aircraft and the respective FDM - at
least I hope it is :-)

Are you able to reproduce the mentioned effect using the above command
line (no ~/.fgfsrc, no obscure config directory) ?

Cheers,
Martin.

Maybe this can be done by removing the rights to read from that
directory at the CVS server side (or something)? It would be a pitty to
remove everything and add it back later.

I'm already in contact with the author of CGtextures.com and that's what he
wrote:

Quote by Marcel Vijfwinkel:
Hello Heiko,

Because a license does not explicitly say it cannot be used for Open Source
does not mean it's fine to release the materials under an Open Source. The
licenses have to be compatible in order to be allowed to do that.

In CGTextures the license it says:

It is not permitted to:
- Sell or distribute any of these textures in an unmodified form, or where the
derived product you are selling or distributing is a Texture or a collection of
Textures.

Most Open Source licenses allow unlimited redistribution of the materials, so
the Open Source licenses are not compatible with this clause in the CGTextures
license.

I can understand it would be nice for your if the textures could be released
under Open Source, but unfortunately it's impossible to run a business if the
textures would be Open Source licensed. If I would allow the textures to be
released under Open Source, anybody could upload them to Bittorrent legally.
And if people could download them without being restricted by a quota they
wouldn't buy memberships. Without the membership sales, I can not work on the
website fulltime and I cannot afford the webhosting or camera equipment to make
these textures. Allowing the release under Open Source is really not any
benifit for my business (and don't get this wrong, even though I give away
textures for free CGTextures is a business).

One option you have is to release your art materials not under Open Source, but
under a license which does not allow redistribution of the textures. Or simply
use textures from another source which can be used under Open Source ofcourse.

Kind regards,

Marcel Vijfwinkel

I'm still not convinced with his answer but until there is more clear licence
or even answer by our laywers (Do we have?)I want to remove the whole history.
I want to be on the safe side!

Thanks
Heiko

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Please remove 727-230 from CVS- Licence issues!

2010-01-23 Thread Curtis Olson
Please, because we are discussing permanent removal of something from the
repository, I need a very clear list of exactly what needs to be removed. I
found 2 additional textures (png files) with similar names to the textures
you requested be removed. I asked about these. Your answer indicated that
these two textures do not make use of textures which doesn't quite make
sense.

If you could give me an exact list of path + filename for each file you
would like to see removed I can do this. I hate to guess or assume or have
to string dots together to arrive at [hopefully] the right answer.

Thank you in advance,

Curt.

[Flightgear-devel] A light cone effect, dev version

2010-01-23 Thread Lauri Peltonen
Hi!

I made an example of a light cone effect. It is a post processing
effect, that makes an object illuminate everything inside of it. It
would be usefull for landing lights or similar objects.

This version uses blending, but the final version should use stencil
buffer, once/if we get effects to support them. Because of the
blending, the lighting value is 1.5 * the value of the underlying
pixel. This means that during night, the light will not be very
visible... I found no way to overcome this without the whole
cone/model becoming visible. One way to cheat this is to add the
object multiple times, since the lighting cumulates. Also fog does not
work correctly.

Attached is the effect file. I also had to make simple vertex and
fragment shaders to get the effect working.

Also, I attached an example of the cone model and its xml. Two
screenshots from during the development is here:
http://users.tkk.fi/~lapelto2/fgfs/fgfs-light.png and
http://users.tkk.fi/~lapelto2/fgfs/fgfs-light2.png

I hope someone finds this dev version usefull, maybe after the release
we can get a real one :)

Only the fuselage-texture were affected. I thought it was clear.

[Flightgear-devel] Web + Design Competition

2010-01-23 Thread Pete Morgan
Since were in the new decade, maybe its time for a new look also for the
new release, also.

A Design competition for the new website and logo would be a nice.

Brief.

Design a new website and image that will make it cool for flight
simulation enviroment, thats functional and will last this coming
decade. or something like that.. ohh and the deadlines next Saturday
(should sort the wood from chaff)

Winner gets a T-Shirt.. and a Joystick (I'll cover that) and a tshirt

just a thought.

That's because you are modifying the FDM not the visual model. I don't
think it is a good idea to commit this without knowing what it does.
Maybe somebody could load the fdm into blender using Melchior's plugin
and spot which section of the fuselage this is and try to deduce the
right numbers by symmetry if possible.
