Re: [Flightgear-devel] Real-Time Radio Propagation, Was: Sqlite location

2012-12-11 Thread James J. Brennan
I'm not a developer here, I just maintain one of the mirror sites.

I would like to comment here a bit.

Over the years I've seen several folks who contributed lots to the
project leave after disputes over one thing or another.

I'd hate to see this lead to something like that!

I personally agree with these points, and the final one in particular:

snip

Please consider that having realistic radio navigation according to terrain
would be as far as I know a unique feature for any flightsimulator I've seen.
To refuse to add such a realism enhancing feature would be quite illogic to

snip

I know you are a pilot, fellow amateur radio operator and one of the leaders
of the project. So please don't say that you would refuse a realism
 increasing
option, which would not even have to be on by default, and which is not
present in any other flightsim that I know of. It would be illogic, and would
limit the options of using Flightgear in other environments, like research
projects, university, aeronautical radio. It would also make a discouraging
 statement vs. contributing to Flightgear.

snip

My suggestion is to include this feature, leave it off, and let anyone
 interested turn it on.

Regards:

jj

Sure they are marked in some charts as they might be useful in an
emergency, but essentially they are not much different from a large
parking lot or a wide road.

One came in pretty handy a few years ago when a guy ran out of gas.

[Flightgear-devel] FlightGear Display Location question

2011-08-18 Thread James J. Brennan

I have installed FlightGear on a Dell laptop which is connected to a second
monitor. When FlightGegear is started the cockpit display comes up on the
(smaller) laptop screen. Is there a way to get it to appear on the (larger)
external screen instead?

[Flightgear-devel] PLUG IN for glass cockpit displays

2010-10-31 Thread James J. Brennan
I've been using the project magenta glass cockpit displays in my simulator
here for some time

They at one time needed the Microsoft flight simulator in order to operate.

I recently discovered a plugin that allows them to now operate with the
x-plane simulator.

I've long hoped that there would be a way to use those displays with
FlightGear, and wonder if anyone has any ideas as to how that could be
accomplished.

Here is a link to the plugin page if you are interested in pursuing this

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Installed, doesn't run.

2010-06-12 Thread james j. brennan
My install of flightgear ran fine once the non-free nvidia drivers got
installed (which was VERY EASY with Ubuntu. and which proved to be V E R Y
difficult with both Debian and fedora).

In fact I've just spent the entire day at an install fest put on by a
local Linux users group, and we never did get them installed in either of
those systems !!! We finally gave up up frustration!

Here are some links to the latest pictures of one of the flight simulators
here at Kingmont.

This started out as a 747-400, but now has additional screens on the sides
like the
B I G airbus. (Used here for maps mostly, but are switchable to any of the
displays).

These are pretty big pictures, and they will take a while for you to
download.

[Flightgear-devel] Password SOMETIMES required

2010-03-02 Thread james j. brennan
Just wanted to let folks know that SOMETIMES you will get a message requiring a
user name and password when attempting to access the mirror site at
http://kingmont.com.

This only happens when the site is at it's maximum user load, so if you know of
anyone seeing this problem, let them know that they SHOULD be able to get on
the site without the need for a user name and password.

Tell them to try again later.

[Flightgear-devel] drivers

2009-07-16 Thread James J. Brennan
I have purchased a new Dell laptop which has an ATI Radeon Mobility HD
3670 vido card installed.

I've placed FEDORA 11 (32 bit) on it and downloaded Flightgear which
fails to run. (I also tried the Fedora 11, 64 bit version with the same
result)

Problem is that the drivers that I have do not support hardware accel.

I've downloaded what I think is the correct driver installation package
from ATI, but after installing it I lost the video display!

(What I have is ati-driver-installer-9-5-x86.x86_64.run .)

I uninstalled it (with some difficulty) and now have the display back,
but (of course) Flightgear still is inop.

Has anyone had any luck in getting this card to work?
Any thoughts will be appreciated!
