I noticed that the apache project uses mostly XML files for configuration.
Personally I prefer using .properties files because then I don't have the
overhead of parsing the file each time. So what's the advantage of using
XML files?

under more liberal licenses like BSD, MIT, X11, Apache, but the other
way round is not possible. There are other drawbacks also...

with iText is as easy as generating XML from Java.
XSLT is just a complicated language.
But I will take a closer look at our xsl files and see how and if things
could be simplified...
