my first template that embeds fo:root matches the root node of my xml-file

This is a pure XSLT question and would receive better answers on a XSLT
list.
So you have a template that matches the root element form, but does that

Is it possible to allocate a column-width a value like 100%?
inline-progression-dimension fop does not support, does it?
Currently FOP only supports tables with fixed (pre-determined) column
woidths, e.g. 5in, 2cm, etc. Therefore percentages are not

the attribute 'clip' is by not implemented by fop.
You have to do it on the xslt stage by cutting the word on
a specific number of characters.

Another approach which is slightly easier is to insert zero widths
This question is more to do with XSLT than XSL-FO, you'll get a better

Hi Xavier,
to generate the FO file from your xml and xsl files you currently have to
run Xalan separately from FOP. Although there are plans to add a batch file
to the FOP distribution to make this easier in future FOP releases. I
believe FOP 0.20.5 will have it.

Hi Vincent,
in general terms an XSL Formatting engine is the wrong tool for generating
Character Text output.
A XSL Formatting engine works with precise coordinates for formatting

Vanessa,
the classes in JAR will only be found if you run the batch file/command you
quoted when you are in the directory in which fop is installed. Notice that
the refs to the JAR files are relative paths, e.g. build\fop.jar etc...
