Adobe vice president for Europe, Pierre Van Beneden, has said: Other

Re: [Slightly OT] attribute value length limits

2005-12-15 Thread Lynne A. Price

Jakob,
I have to agree with Marcus, that attributes of that length are in the
least unusual. Still, exceeding a quantity should result in invalid SGML,
but not truncate the export. I therefore suspect you are bumping up against
an implementation dependency of some sort.

  The relevant quantities are:

ATTSPLEN (normalized length of a start-tag's attribute specification list)
LITLEN (which applies to the length of an attribute value after entity and
character references within it are interpreted)

NORMSEP (used to separate values in a list-valued attribute)
TAGLEN (length of a start-tag)

The Dev Guide says that ATTSPLEN, LITLEN, and TAGLEN can be increased up to
30 times their values in the reference concrete syntax (respectively, 960,
240, and 960).

RE: Those old book numbering blues

2005-12-15 Thread Joe Malin
I'm confused.

You want one autonumber format to control stuff that flows through an
entire book. You want paragraph numbers not reset between chapters. If
so, then you *don't* want n=0, cuz that will restart the numbering?

To set up *one* paragraph style so that it was numbered
from paragraph 1 for the book's first paragraph in the first file,
to paragraph n for the n-th paragraph in the last file,

I'd use autonumber P:n+ for the style, and set Document Numbering...
so that paragraph numbers continued from the previous file in the book.

Alternatively, if I wanted the first paragraph to be 1 for *each* file
in the book, I'd use P:n+ but set Document Numbering... so that
paragraph numbers restart at 1 for each file.

Set each book component to continue numbering through the book.

Then set your chapter title numbering as follows:

Chapter\ $chapnum =0 =0 =0 =0 =0

The placeholder after $chapnum is the one you want to continue
through the book.
The =0 resetters are for the numbering you want to restart for each
chapter, e.g. figure,
table, equation numbering, etc. Is this what you want?

That's good to know - if I could sign again, I would. After fourteen years of

and even now learning new stuff and new techniques, and am being constantly

Adobe Layoffs

Yeah, or Siberia... Heh. You're nice and settled in the UK with house,
mortgage, family, kids, and they offer you a job in Lithuania. I don't think so.

Maybe if there's enough of them, they can form a start-up and create a
replacement for FrameMaker ;-)

Ok, inappropriate humor: I feel for them too. Been there, done that, didn't
even get a lousy T-shirt.

2005-12-15 Thread Steve Rickaby
Dear Experts

Is there any way of controlling crop bleeds in FrameMaker other than
deliberately oversizing graphics and overhanging them from page edges? And if
the answer is 'no', how big should the bleeds be?

Or should I be ignoring bleeds in FrameMaker altogether and setting them up
using the pre-press options in Acrobat for the final PDF?

Spot color, FrameMaker 7, probably offset litho (eventually)

Adobe Layoffs

2005-12-15 Thread Glenn Voyles

I was at an STC meeting last night and sat at a table with a Macromedia
survivor. I don't recall the numbers (as I'm really a writer ;-).
However, this story just goes to show how important your personal
network is. As the layoffs were being dolled out, there was a lot of
local IM chatter among former colleagues at other companies. There were
several who had already been offered new positions within the day, many
had to wait the weekend.

Also, the survivor sited personal career development as a key factor in
her being kept on, and she guessed correctly on a few a projects that
she thought would be key business assets.

So, think, be smart, be nice, stay in touch = best chance of staying on.

Has anyone heard how many Adobe//Macromedia employees have been laid
off as a result of the merger? I think it's being announced today.

Poor souls. Being laid off is no fun at the best of times, but one week
before Christmas? That's gotta hurt. I guess they'll have little to
cheer about in the New Year.

Adobe vice president for Europe, Pierre Van Beneden, has said: "Other
workers in Europe, for example, some in the UK, may be offered jobs in
Nordic regions or Eastern Europe..." I guess they can always get jobs
working on Microsoft's Acrylic or Apple's Aperture.

Hi Steve,

You have to make things bigger and hang them off the page. I have
traditionally used 9 points or .125 (1/8) in. for bleed size.

[Slightly OT] attribute value length limits

No and anything over a couple of mm. In my current job they overhang 1
cm.

No, Mac FrameMaker should handle them fine.

I'm confused.

You want one autonumber format to control stuff that flows through an

so, then you *don't* want
