Adding a shadow to text in Framemaker 7.1
Tracy, What you are talking about is a graphic. Which is bad news. You would need to create the graphic for each chapter number. IF you are lucky you might find a suitable font. But I wouldn't count on it. If you do end up creating a graphic, then the best tool for this is from Xara Corporation. Check out www.xara.com for more information ... their Xara3D 6 will do this and much more for text stuff - including outstanding and easy shadow generation (for text and graphical objects). The price ($29 for the download version) is excellent for what it does, and they are having some sort of combined product sale right now (as I recall) too. Preparing for FrameMaker ACE Exam
Hi all, I am going to take the FM 8 ACE exam in late April. I have been using FrameMaker for over a year now and I am an expert level user with unstructured FrameMaker. However, I know there's a sizeable amount of material on structured FrameMaker in the test as well. I have recently started creating structured documents, EDDs, and applications. I am also reading the Application Develeper Guide and the Application Developer Reference Guide as well. Does anyone know of some resources they would recommend using in order to prepare for the exam? -- Sincerely, Joseph Lorenzini

Hi Diane, If the Word docs are in the new docx format, then you can extract the graphics right out of them. The docx format is basically a zipped xml file. If you rename the file with the extension .zip, you can use Windows to extract the component files for you. I read about this one in some tech writing blog, but I can't remember which one to give you the link to this tip (sorry). Or as something else; that's up to the import filter. Possibly even the original format imported into Word, since, unlike Frame, Word does retain the name of the imported file. In any case, what you will get from the Mif2Go export is whatever is there in Frame. Internally, Frame stores the embedded images as graphic insets. While they don't have the original file name, they do retain the original data, just in Frame's own (lossless) encoding. So we can get it out and save it in its originally-imported (into Frame) format, with a new name. Just try it and see what happens. You don't have to know the format in advance, just tell Mif2Go to export everything, including OLE objects, and see what you get. ;-) -- Jeremy H. Creating cross book links that work in a PDF file

I could swear I've done this before > and am going totally blank on how to get this to work correctly! > > Anybody out there who can clear the fog? To make the inter-book links work in the PDFs, there are a number of conditions that must be met: -Both book files must be open when you generate each PDF. (Component files need not be open, but the book files *must* be.) -The names of the PDF files must match the names of the book files (except for the extensions, of course). Any difference in name means the links will refer to a non-existant file. -The PDF files must be in the same relative directory locations as the book files. The easiest case is to have both book files are in the same directory, because then there will be no path component in the PDF links. If the books are in different directories, then you must create directories with the same names and relative locations to contain the PDFs. -You need to have the "Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs" option selected in the PDF Setup dialog for both books. FrameMaker has no way of knowing what paragraphs in a given book might be referred to from an external book, so without selecting this option Frame might eliminate some named destinations that are needed for intr-book links. -Fred Ridder

Creating cross book links that work in a PDF file
OK, I'm apparently having a total brain breakdown and need some help! I'm working with a client who has a large set of FrameMaker (7.x version) files in two separate books. One is the database documentation set and the other is the end user (GUI) documentation. The end user documentation has many, many, many cross references to the database document (to pick up field names, descriptions, values, and that kind of thing). The links are working properly in FrameMaker...when you click the link in the GUI documentation it opens to the right location in the database documentation. However, when we create the PDF files, the links are "hot" and can't find the file with the source information. I could swear I've done this before and am going totally blank on how to get this to work correctly! Anybody out there who can clear the fog? Thanks oodles and bunches and lots. Blessings Jerilynne
FM 9 Desired Feature - Variables to Return to Match Entry First Letter Functionality
Update -- Even though there is not a Match Entry First Letter functionality that works as before and as described in the prior post below, I have subsequently found an auto-complete style functionality. When I type CTRL+0 and continue typing the first few letters of the variable -- for instance, "Mac" for "Machine Name," it does come up in the box, and I can insert the variable. From: Pinkham, Jim Sent: Thursday, April 02, 2009 9:47 AM To: framers at lists.frameusers.com Subject: FM 9 Desired Feature - Variables to Return to Match Entry First Letter Functionality This may have been mentioned before, but I think it bears repeating. It's been very useful in Frame to type CTRL+0 to get to the variable list and then to type the first lettter of the named variable and cycle through until the desired entry appears for selection. What FM 9 does is bring up the first alphabetically corresponding variable and then present a drop-down. For example, if I choose M, I get Modification Date. In the past, I could then type M a couple of times more and wend my way through the various variables until Machine Name popped up. Now, instead, I have to go hunt for Machine Name in the drop-down list. It's a small thing, but an efficiency. A return to the old behavior, in this case, would be appreciated. Jim

-Fred Ridder ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Display bug in FrameMaker 7.2
Thanks for the replies, guys. FrameMakers multiple document interface, and the maximise/minimise buttons on the title bar all work normally. The problem is actually the sticky window which continues to display the minimised document when it is supposed to be reduced to an icon at the bottom of the window. Although we don't have this problem with any other application, I now think Art is probably right and the problem is not with FrameMaker.
